I watched it while simultaneously listening to the Destructoid commentary. General consensus, far less embarrassing than previous iterations. That being said... there were only FIVE televised awards. Are you kidding me? FIVE? Trailer after trailer, musical performances, Wolfgang Gartner... no awards. How is this even an awards show? Geez.

Your reactions?

It was probably the best VGA show in recent memory, in my opinion. Samuel L. Jackson was a fun host, some of the skits were pretty funny, and the performances were fun, especially Tenacious D's awesome show-closer. I wish they televised more of the awards, but that's probably my biggest complaint.

Samuel L skits were great.

REALLY let down though just before it started that Bungie's next game was not going to be one of the featured premiers. Moreso though at the oh so overrated HL:2's undeserving game of the decade.

Like what's been said, it was much better than recent years, although still more marketing exercise than award show. But is was enjoyable, and I rather enjoyed Samuel's various cameos in games. And of course Samuel L "Motherfuckin'" Jackson makes everything better.

ITT: A redundant thread title. >.>

Anyway, other than the lack of awards actually being given out during the thing (6 total actually: shooter, action-adventure, independant, character ot Y, GOTY, and GOTDecade) it was okay. Much better than last year. AND HOLY CRAPTASM DARK SOULS II!

It was kinda funny during the Spike preshow they were talking to people and were like "oh by the way, here's this award you've won".

Dark Souls II
The Last of Us
Bioshock Infinite
The Phantom Pain

Gaming center of the brain is on overload right now.

Also, I agree that more of the awards should have been televised.

I think I have a headache from Samuel L. Jackson smacking me in head every 10 seconds while telling me how much of a badass he is. He's a TOTAL badass guys, seriously. Did I mention how much of a badass Samuel L. Jackson is? Anyway that man's ego is the size of Mars. Also of the 20+ actual awards only 5 were televised? Tomb Raider looks interesting but I'm afraid it's going to be a HEAVILY scripted linear shooter that disguises itself as an open world adventure game. All the commercials were the exact same everytime, Black Ops 2 and Tom Cruise, Black Ops 2 and Tom Cruise, Black Ops 2 and Tom Cruise etc... Samuel L. Jackson's a BADASS! I think the orchastra performances would have been great had they done somethimg different with the camera angles and had actually turned down the volume of the game in the backround. I love the mix of "A" and "B" list actors they bring in who clearly have no real interest in gaming as a form of entertainment. Samuel L. Jackson's a BADASS! The "Character of the Year" cameo's were good. The Last of Us looks great dispite being a PS3 exclusive, I wonder how long Sony will go before demanding Naughty Dog tack on a multiplayer component in order to help curb used game sales and because they think singleplayer games can't be successful on their own merits. Gears of War 3.5, I mean Judgement looks mildly entertaining. Samuel L. Jackson's a BADASS! I'm happy to see HL2 won "Game of the Decade"!!! Clap-Trap won "Character of the Year" which is cool, "Wanna play some new Spartan Ops?"... 343i - "LOL no guy, not until January 21st, 2013!!!"

All in all it was meh!

Sorry I'm kinda grumpy and cynical right now.

It was actually alright. Kinda surprised acually. Loved the dark souls 2 announcement.

However, Lords of Shadows 2 is to be set in the future and it looks like you will play as Dracula...ughhhh. I'm not usually a stickler for lore but...

Spoiler for the Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, and Lords of Shadow incoming!
Julius Belmont killed Dracula 1999! Which led to Soma Cruz being his reincarnation! Don't screw this up Konami! Dracula needs to die at the end of this game!

Little surprised at Walking Dead winning it, I thought Journey was gonna sweep. I would've been fine if it was either of those, though, as those were the most "showing off what games can do best" out of all the nominations.

About every five minutes were cringe worthy, but it got a little less so as the show went on, and overall was better than other years.

The GOTY orchestra was my favorite part and actually genuinely enjoyable. The Phantom Pain's trailer was neat because fire whales.

2 cents have been given.

I was pleasantly surprised at a number of things.

1. Borderlands 2 won best shooter and best multiplayer. Leaving Black Ops 2 and MW3 in the dust.

2. The Walking Dead won GOTY. I still don't believe this one. I thought for sure ME 3 or Journey would take that one. But at least Journey took the best independent game award.

3. The Phantom Pain looked awesome and creepy as hell. Definitely gotta check this one out, if only for the GIANT, FLYING, FLAMING WHALE!

All in all, I thought this was a pretty good award show. Samuel L. Jackson was just awesome, but we all expected that. And the skits of him in the videogames were gold. Especially his Minecraft and Angry Birds appearances.

They had a Game of the Decade category, but didn't have any Timesplitters win. Or even get nominated

That's pretty much all I know. Forgot the VGA's were a thing that was happening tonight. Don't really care about anything else that much.

I didn't watch it but this was MFW I found out that Borderlands 2 had won best shooter, best multiplayer and that Dameon Clarke won best performance for a human male (or whatever it is) for Handsome Jack.

Slightly off-topic but why do they have to call it 'best performance by a human male/female?' Why do they feel the need to clarify that the winner is human? What else are they gonna be, a dog or something?

CL4P-TP Also won character of the year. That give Borderlands 2 4 awards right now. Unless I missed one of the awards that wasn't announced.

P.S. Also what WAS with only showing 6 awards out of around 20 anyway?

My only gripe of the whole thing is that now I want a Samuel L. Jackson mode in EVERY GAME FROM NOW ON.

Difficulties would be something like this:

We'll just play the game like a movie for you
Easy
Normal
Hard
Insane
Impossible
Samuel L. Jackson - Also changes the player character to Mr. Jackson, even if it's supposed to be say, Lara Croft.

>Mass Effect 3 wins RPG of the year.
>Mass Effect 3
>RPG
My reaction.

>Sound Shapes wins best Handheld/Portable game.
>Virtues Last Reward not even nominated.
2Deep4U?

>Katawa Shoujo nominated for NOTHING!

This show has been a joke for ten straight years.

I have gripes with the part where they had the orchestra. Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to overlay the music with gameplay sound effects? The music would've been so greatest without it, but no they had to ruin what could have been one the most beautiful moment of the whole show. The Last of Us guitar portion only slightly made up for that; it was way too short. Come on, does nearly every single moment of the show have to be run by adrenalin?

Also, do half of the celebrities who appeared here even play video games? And how the hell did the nominees for best game over the past 10 years include Wii Sports?

That said, Samuel L. Jackson was a freaking pimp.

This VGA was better than the usual. There's still plenty of room for improvement, though.

Hooray Dark Souls II!
