It's the space marines right because anything with space marines is a halo rip off right? Even if space marines came before halo.

Maybe Cameron just wanted Halo fans to shut up in general?
Who doesn't want that?
Even if games workshop (warhammer 40K) was the truly first "space marine," 25+ years ago
Yeah but do you really think that's gonna stop a halo fanboy?

It is a bit ironic seeing as Halo is one of the least original games I have ever seen. Space marines shooing at aliens. That has never been done before Halo.

I'm surprised how everyone here quickly dismisses and insults the fanboys when there is one question: Who the hell said that Halo fans were criticizing Avatar? I sure have never seen or read anything like that.

Sounds completely made up.
I swear I have NEVER heard any comparisons to Halo...until now

(now the drop ships from Aliens maybe ish but Halo's not the only one to have been inspired by that movie...just every sci-fi game and movie since lol)

i say instead of criticizing him (pardon the spelling) we should congratulate hi on making a good movie and IF he already has the look down get him to make the halo movie which hopefully would be equally amazing

What's worse than fanboys?

Dogmatic haters.
I agree for the most part, but the two are not always mutually exclusive.
They are rarely, if ever, mutually exclusive.

I still cannot fathom where all the Halo hate comes from in gamer circles.

I almost feel sorry for Bungie, but then I look at thier earnings from the franchise and take a wild guess that they really, really don't give a shit what some random, pissed off internet nerds think.
psh yeah...still, all this kinda bites, is there really no respect and dignity anywhere? c'mon Escapist members, this isn't YouTube...please? lol

I'm confused. I enjoy the Alien franchise. I enjoy the Halo franchise. I liked the Avatar movie.

I didn't see any plagurism of Alien in Halo. Or Halo in Avatar. People really are stupid.

Oh wow. Halo fans are criticizing Avatar?

Now, while I adored Avatar and thought it was the best film of '09, I will agree that the story isn't all that original. It was basically the illegitimate child of Dances with Wolves and the Last Samurai that they abandoned in the forest to be raised by Disney's Pocahontas and Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. The resulting movie was incredible, but it did lack originality (which is NOT the most important element of a film).

But this is taking things too far. The airships in the movie looked like the ones in Halo (I recognized that right off the bat), but that was the only similarity. Nothing else was really like Halo. Plus, Cameron started work on Avatar BEFORE TITANIC, which came out in '97. Halo came out in '01. Get your facts straight, fanboys.

Typical Halo Fanboys who believe their holy, divine, god sent game is of 100% genuine originality. Ironic that they insult the man whom created the franchises that Halo rips off.

Avatar was FernGully meets Pocahontas in my opinion, whereas Halo was and always will be a bland fusion of generic space marines and a shooter for those who can't play real shooters... Too totally different things as far as I'm concerned. Cameron has had Avatar in the works for almost two decades so to say Halo was the model for the whole Pandora world is well... Ridiculous. I won't say Avatar was the greatest movie of '09, but it sure as Hell kept my attention a lot longer than those 3 Halo's and their various spin-offs did.

Avatar wasn't that good. Honestly, for being in production for as long as it was you'd think they could've come up with a story that was a bit more engaging. Avatar doesn't rip-off Halo in anyway, however...that being said with the budget Avatar had, why didn't Cameron take that gigantic budget, take advantage of all the Halo novels and storylines and make a sweet movie? Also he needs to stop trying to defend Avatar, nobody F-ing cares.

We could simply wait until Cameron finishes all three movies, criticize him, then let some random Director do a reboot to make it more like Halo? Jake Sully, Master Chief. THEN let them complain. Until that happens i'll just keep waiting for everyone else to get on the Cameron 3D effects bandwagon.

Usually when the word 'Halo' is mentioned on any forum, a strange phenomenon occurs where usually sane and polite people turn into inarticulate, raging idiots.

This applies both for the 'loves Halo' camp and the 'hates Halo' camp.

MW2 is stealing its thunder a bit now though.

I'm glad Mr Cameron hasn't heard what the 40K community is saying. While the HALO lads may be pointing out the similarities in his aesthetics (which, to be fair, are near-future cyberpunk designs), the 40K community is pointing out that the whole idea of primitive aliens winning in a war against competent, trained fighters is a fucking absurdity of monumental proportions.

Actually, what most of them say is PURGE THE XENOS.

I didn't realize other Halo lovers made this observation. I'm not criticizing Avatar at all, but I'll admit the first time I saw the trailer to this movie, I thought: "I thought the Halo movie was cancelled". And yes, I based this off of how similar the vehicles looked. :p

I'm definitely not criticizing anyone, though...

What do you mean? The story is still horribly ripped off.
ripped off of what?
Do you want the list?
Off the top of my head,

Pocahontas.
Dances with Wolves.
Atlantis.
Battle for Terra.

And many others.

Also, don't use the "But Cameron had this idea a long time ago excuse." Those other movies were made first.
actually NO i didnt want the list.
actually, cameron's influence for the movie was the iraqi war and the native americans.
Well then he should have done more research. The story has been done so many times before that it's become dull, weather it was ripped or not. Also, if it was based of Iraq and the Native Americans, he should have added what both of those had. TWO SIDES! No real story is black and white, and any movie or game that is, is hardly ever good. I mean, Bioshock had it's ending get ridiculed because it was too black and white. Avatar was the worst victim of the Black and White syndrome.
so youre saying it was cool that the white man went into north america and pretty much wiped out the native americans and destroyed their culture although they had no right?
sounds like somebody is a little to defensive.. or closed minded of their human race.
the movie potrayed big companies pretty accurately. all they care about is money and wouldnt even think twice about destroying a rainforest or two in the process.
i mean, you can try and justify what the early americans did during the american indian wars and after that when land that they had no right to.
No, I agree that what the Europeans did to the Native Americans was terrible, the thing is, the Native Americans had their share of killing and looting and stealing among themselves. I agree that it did the companies correctly, but the Na'vi were just too good.
They had NO faults! And the colonel really was comedic evil.

I think my point is, no race is perfect and the Avatar basically shot that in the face and said "You what? These guys ARE perfect. Suck it."
