May I ask why it's taking so long to execute them?

What, you can't spare a few minutes at a firing squad? They're already going to die, no need to make them suffer more. I can understand since many of them are horrible criminals deserving of death, but this doesn't exactly make things better.

Sheesh, what is wrong with the prison system anyways? Some prisons give their inmates PS3's, others drive them insane with horrible living conditions. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS. >

Seriously? Keeping people on death row for decades? That's fucking sadistic.
To live knowing you're going to die, and having to wait decades for it? No, just no.

Quickly, we must throw them pizzas, coca-cola, some chips and few PS3s!!! Or they will boycott!

I think MOST of us have about 60-80 decades to live anyway.

It's a waste of tax payer money. Just kill them already.

Why not do what Singapore does? Cane them.
And if caning them doesn't work, hang them. It's quick, it's easy and it shows why Singapore has the lowest crime rate in the world.

I used to live there and I could walk anywhere without having to worry. =P it was pretty sweet.

Given our history and nature as a conniving, hateful species, some innocent people probably end up in these conditions due to incorrect or corrupt trials.

I don't believe in capital punishment anyway, but to torture someone for years before the inveitability of it... that's just wrong, wrong, wrong.

To quote the Smiths' I Know It's Over, possibly the most depressing song I've ever listened to,

"It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind."

Trying to be "cool" and come up with inventive and cruel ways to kill people who you've convinced yourself deserve the 9th circle of Dante's Hell shows a distinct lack of empathy completely ignores some of the facts of the situation.

1. Innocent people (and, from a 99% conviction rate, it'd be lots of innocent people) are being tortured and killed.
2. Prison doesn't have to be at either extreme. Many here claim that it's either this, or internet access + TV access + etc. You would have to be a fool of biblical proportions to actually have convinced yourself of this. Strict and humane are not mutually exclusive.
3. Apart from anything else, it's a huge waste of money leaving people languishing in these cells. If the death penalty must be carried out (dangerous and open to abuse in itself), and it's a sure conviction (in such a way that an appeal is clearly foolish and a waste of time), there's no reason not to just put the criminal to sleep straight after.

As Winston Churchil said (paraphrased), a 5-minute conversation with the average voter is enough to convince one that democracy is a bad idea. People do not want a justice system - they want a vengeance system. This is counter-progressive to the extreme - society as a whole will never progress if we continue supporting these emotionally driven measures.
QFT, you win a medal for being one of the saner posters in this thread.

It's not what they're doing that's messed up, just the time it takes.

Treat a guy like shit for a day or two no biggie, but 40 years? Yeah you've gone way the fuck over the line at that point. That's Count of Monte Cristo over the line.

The xenophobia in this thread is quite surprising.

I just don't get why people are up in arms about this. I'm sure the whole point of prison is to make you suffer the punishment of your crimes. Insanity is suffering, is it not?

The amount of stupidity in this thread is quite surprising.

Prison is for rehabilitation, not punishment, death row should be abolished completely. It makes you just as bad as the person who does it.

They've committed crimes so heinous that the suitable punishment is death. Why is this an issue?
One thing you might want to know is that Japan doesn't have a right to trial by jury.

Ah, now that does change a lot...
That wasn't sarcasm, by the way.

I was surprised about it too while reading the Economist some time ago.

Aha! Here's the online version of the article:

Oh just fucking execute them all at once. Get it over with. If they are murders/rapists and guilty as charged then just do the deed to be done with it.

Interesting, isn't it? Living in the western world you just sort of assume that everyone would have a fair trial system. Well, I say 'fair'...

As long as they are certainly guilty, which tends to be the way, as Japan likes to keep their conviction rate at 99%, then so what?
Why should criminals be given humane conditions?
Because they're still humans?

Law isn't about revenge, it's about fucking justice. About removing disorderly members from society. Pain, humanity, they're not fucking relative, they're notfucking transitive, and they're not fucking equative to any action a human can do. Even serial killers are humans, and deserveto be treated as such right up until we suffocate them.

The opinions being expressed in this thread are quickly smothering the rat's ass I still gave about people. The "good people".
