I just borrowed Halo 3 ODST from my brother. The area seemed pretty clear except for a brute in front of me, so I run up to him, kill him and as I turn around to go back to cover

While I was killing the brute, a hunter had made its way up, and was right in my face when I turned around.
I just felt the need to share that after it happened, because the way it happened caught me off so much and I was shocked.
So I ask my fellow escapists, what surprise in a game has left you screaming whatever deity or curse came to mind at the time? As you can see, not necessarily scary, just startling.

The day before the release of Modern Warfare 2... playing the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer.... the map, it is pipeline... I raise the scope of my sniper rifle to my eye, and quickly fix myself onto my intended target...then suddenly *SLASH!!!* I WAS KNIFED. BY A LVL1 NOT EVEN IN PRESTIGE. WHY DID YOU START NOW?!!?!

Most games do things like this to me. Oblivion and Fallout have he uncanny ability of sending Rats/Molerats jumping at me just as I turn round. Scares the living daylights out of me.

Anyway, I'm pretty much like that around Deathclaws. Fallout 3 made me afraid or the wastelands again.

I was just wandering around in Borderlands at a low level when suddenly I heard screeching and saw enemies on my radar. I looked around and didn't see anything, but I still heard the screaming. So I did what I normally do in these situations and huddled up into a corner so my back wasn't exposed. Then all of a sudden a swarm of Rakk swooped down from above and tore me apart before I could even react. I was completely caught off guard.

Oh god that scares the crap out of me.
More so when it glitches out and the Tank audio isnt playing untill it starts running. (When cranking the volume cant save you)

Playing Diablo in the middle of the night, at a dungeon, health fairly low, opening a door and my headphones come to life:

Left 4 dead 2, first campaign, opened a door to reveal a tank in a room that flew straight into the supply room I was in. No room = ouchies!

My reward: A chainsaw. (Not too bad actually! )
