Well I refuse to play the game until they change it's name to 'Yes Woman's Ground' so I win this argument.
You probably shouldn't. While this was bait, the reason people fell for it was because given their regular stuff something like that being genuine would not be a surprise from them.Azure23 said:I don't read Jezabel but if this is the kinda thing they do I should probably start.
I have literally never seen that word before. Thanks for using it! Now I am one word smarter.BloatedGuppy said:jeremiad
It's phrased seriously precisely because they're aware that that will result in people falling for it. Anything less, and it wouldn't work; that's the point.bastardofmelbourne said:It's too serious. There's no punchline, no self-awareness, and nothing to indicate that this is anything other than a dumb person saying legitimately dumb shit in all seriousness.
I think that's unfair to the readers.Silvanus said:It's phrased seriously precisely because they're aware that that will result in people falling for it. Anything less, and it wouldn't work; that's the point.
Their intention is not the same of that of The Onion. Their intention, presumably, has been to get people to reveal their own naivete and gullibility, which has successfully been done in this thread alone.
It's unfair to readers without brains, but then, so is life. The Onion is unfair to people who see reposted articles and don't get the joke. A lot of things are unfair to people without much going on upstairs, or no sense of humor.bastardofmelbourne said:I think that's unfair to the readers.Silvanus said:It's phrased seriously precisely because they're aware that that will result in people falling for it. I wouldn't call it unfair to readers. Atleast to regulars that might recognize the bait from the get go. For the rest though... yeah, small part will agree, a bit larger part will joyfuly shout "Aha!" as they've found their Moby Vaj of strawman feminist, rest will just wonder if they are really that stupid or just pretending to be. But hey, maybe with Gawker going down they just don't care?bastardofmelbourne said:snipSilvanus said:snip
Then you're clearly unfamiliar with Jezebel. The article is the textbook definition of satire and self-aware irony.bastardofmelbourne said:If it's real (it isn't) that's pretty dumb.
If it's a joke, well...it's still clickbait, so fuck 'em. There's no real satire going on there, they're just saying something deliberately ridiculous so people will go nuts in the comments. There's no "joke." What's the joke there? "We said something dumb and people called us dumb?" That's not funny, that's you being dumb.
I mean, read the text of the article:
For those of you who have spent the past week wondering why Jezebel has not yet published a review of the long-awaited PC/console game No Man's Sky, allow us to explain ourselves: we find the name of this "first person space travel" game to be distasteful, offensive, and shamelessly anti-feminist.
Jezebel will not be reviewing - or even playing - No Man's Sky. In a game that claims to take place inside "an infinite procedurally generated galaxy," there should be more than enough room for equality.

I'm not really familiar with it at all. Thankfully, it seems.Zen Bard said:Then you're clearly unfamiliar with Jezebel. The article is the textbook definition of satire and self-aware irony.
The Onion is funny. This isn't.Helter Skelter said:It's unfair to readers without brains, but then, so is life. The Onion is unfair to people who see reposted articles and don't get the joke. A lot of things are unfair to people without much going on upstairs, or no sense of humor.
You're confusing parody with satire. Satire doesn't have to be funny, it has to be absurd. The thought of a feminist celebrity gossip blog refusing to review a game because it has the word "Man" in the title is absurd.bastardofmelbourne said:I'm not really familiar with it at all. I don't think this is really satire just because it isn't very funny. Satire is supposed to use comedy and exaggeration to highlight social issues. This is just one more article full of dumb shit on an internet that is a good ninety percent dumb shit.
I don't know, man. At this point it's just semantics. I really, really don't want to get into an argument over the definition of satire.Zen Bard said:snip
