Well I refuse to play the game until they change it's name to 'Yes Woman's Ground' so I win this argument.

I don't read Jezabel but if this is the kinda thing they do I should probably start.

That's some pro baiting right there. Seriously, the comments on that article are wonderful. And it's even better when I come back and read what our sterling community has to say. I mean, I've read some pretty silly comments from some of you in the past, but I never expected to see so many taken in by something so obvious. Of course it's likely that the reactionary anti fems around here didn't even click the link because "why would I give Jezabel clicks they're like feminist internet Satan!!!" And ended up making fools of themselves that way.

Either way good show.

You probably shouldn't. While this was bait, the reason people fell for it was because given their regular stuff something like that being genuine would not be a surprise from them.

If it's real (it isn't) that's pretty dumb.

If it's a joke, well...it's still clickbait, so fuck 'em. There's no real satire going on there, they're just saying something deliberately ridiculous so people will go nuts in the comments. There's no "joke." What's the joke there? "We said something dumb and people called us dumb?" That's not funny, that's you being dumb.

I mean, read the text of the article:

For those of you who have spent the past week wondering why Jezebel has not yet published a review of the long-awaited PC/console game No Man's Sky, allow us to explain ourselves: we find the name of this "first person space travel" game to be distasteful, offensive, and shamelessly anti-feminist.

Jezebel will not be reviewing - or even playing - No Man's Sky. In a game that claims to take place inside "an infinite procedurally generated galaxy," there should be more than enough room for equality.

For an in-depth review, please visit our sister site.

It's too serious. There's no punchline, no self-awareness, and nothing to indicate that this is anything other than a dumb person saying legitimately dumb shit in all seriousness.

Compare it to this [http://www.theonion.com/article/gold-medalist-triple-jumper-its-all-about-jumping--53555] excerpt from the Onion:

RIO DE JANEIRO - Candidly opening up about his winning strategy after taking gold in the event, U.S. Olympic triple-jumper Christian Taylor revealed to reporters Friday that the key to a successful triple jump is jumping twice, and then jumping one more time. "I jump two times, and then - and this is the most important part - I always jump another time; that third jump is really the most important jump," said the two-time Olympian, adding that a competitor could, conceivably, perform only two jumps in the event, but their performance would be greatly improved by adding a third jump after the first two jumps.

See? That's funny. Jezebel's shit isn't funny. It's low-grade trolling. It's the journalistic equivalent of typing "ez" into post-game chat after a win.

It's phrased seriously precisely because they're aware that that will result in people falling for it. Anything less, and it wouldn't work; that's the point.

Their intention is not the same of that of The Onion. Their intention, presumably, has been to get people to reveal their own naivete and gullibility, which has successfully been done in this thread alone.

I think that's unfair to the readers.

Whenever we're reading a news article online (and whenever communicating with people in general) the base assumption we start with that the writer of the article is sincere. If the writer seems to be sincerely expressing an incredibly dumb position, and a reader reaches the conclusion that the writer is just dumb, and the writer later says "Aha! I was lying!", that's not clever and it's not satire. The writer is just exploiting that base assumption that they're being sincere. It does nothing other than prove that the writer is insincere and kind of a jerk.

I could walk into any internet forum in the world and announce that I hate black people because they want to steal our women, and even though that statement is inherently goddamn ridiculous, I'm more likely to get called a racist than to be applauded as a clever satirist.

Wait, why am I writing all this when I just had to link to Poe's law? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe%27s_law]

It's unfair to readers without brains, but then, so is life. The Onion is unfair to people who see reposted articles and don't get the joke. A lot of things are unfair to people without much going on upstairs, or no sense of humor.

I wouldn't call it unfair to readers. Atleast to regulars that might recognize the bait from the get go. For the rest though... yeah, small part will agree, a bit larger part will joyfuly shout "Aha!" as they've found their Moby Vaj of strawman feminist, rest will just wonder if they are really that stupid or just pretending to be. But hey, maybe with Gawker going down they just don't care?
So, yeah, you're right, Poe's Law and all that...

Then you're clearly unfamiliar with Jezebel. The article is the textbook definition of satire and self-aware irony.

Jezebel is a "feminist and entertainment" blog. They have never been a gaming or game oriented site and, in the history of it's existence, has NEVER published a game review.

It would be like Cosmopolitan saying "We have decided not detail performance specs of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro", or Car and Driver saying "We have decided not to cover New York Fashion Week."

Don't get me wrong...Jezebel is a terrible click-baity site that's home to hack journalists and whiny entitled urbanites. But this particular time, they are being surprisingly self-aware.

Too bad everyone else can't be like me and have zero fucks given about what other people decide to get butt hurt over. Let them sit in there corner stewing in their stupidity and don't give them any attention.

I'm not really familiar with it at all. Thankfully, it seems.

I don't think this is really satire just because it isn't very funny. Satire is supposed to use comedy and exaggeration to highlight social issues. This is just one more article full of dumb shit on an internet that is a good ninety percent dumb shit.

I mean, it's one thing to troll someone in a clever and entertaining way; it's another thing to just say dumb shit to rile someone up. It's the difference between this video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRRsXxE1KVY] and just calling someone's landline repeatedly to shout wordlessly at them.

The Onion is funny. This isn't.

The only humour operating here is "Ha ha, you thought I was telling the truth when I said that dumb thing when in fact, I was not! Ha, what a loser!" That's shitty humour. It's about as funny as the ending of Carrie.

Really. Well, I refuse to review Doom because it has no ducks. Now, someone make me famous for it.

No?

Well, alright then. No excuses.

Is deliberately baiting hostile reactions now just the normal level of ethical behaviour to expect from media these days? It's kind of scummy, no matter how stupid and reviled your intended target is. That stuff should at least be left to the readers in the comment section. The bar just gets lower and lower.

Maybe I am missing something but if you want to claim your silly article on the internet is a joke, then it needs to be funny. Even when I try to see the joke of the article, I can't see it. Is it just that they said dumb shit to rile up the anti-feminists? Because there are cases where I find that funny. This isn't one of them.

This wouldn't be the first time I saw people on the internet claiming that their stupid comments were meant as jokes. Then again, maybe I just don't share their sense of humour. I don't really know who they are either so maybe they reference things I don't regocnise.

You're confusing parody with satire. Satire doesn't have to be funny, it has to be absurd. The thought of a feminist celebrity gossip blog refusing to review a game because it has the word "Man" in the title is absurd.

"The Onion", "The Colbert Report" and even, to an extent, "The Daily Show" are parodies.

Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, Vehooven's Robocop and Starship Troopers are satire. They may have some funny moments, but none of them are out and out comedies.

Robocop, for example, is a satire of the materialistic and excessive 80's culture...right down to the insanely gratuitous violence.

Your initial point was that the article in Jezebel must be real because it wasn't funny. I agree. It wasn't funny. But through an exaggerated absurdity (of them being a man-hating feminazi website), the article managed to make fun of themselves.

If you didn't like it or find it funny, that's fine. But that doesn't preclude it from being a joke. Maybe not a good joke. But it was still a joke.

So, a website that once whipped up it's gullible readers into believing that nice guys are worse than blatant misogynists. They wrote an article that was meant to be taken as a joke. The joke would be on the people who ever taken this website seriously in the first place.

Would the name No Man's Sky should be considered pro-feminist? If it's "no man", then it would be nothing but women's sky.

I don't know, man. At this point it's just semantics. I really, really don't want to get into an argument over the definition of satire.

As for the three films you cited, I found them all to be kind of funny in a self-aware, "look how ridiculous this is" kind of way. You're right in that they aren't comedies, but none of them put forward the ideals they were satirising in a completely serious and sincere way. You really need that wink-wink nudge-nudge moment for a satire to work; otherwise it's not a satire, it's just a straight example of the thing it's supposed to be satirising.

But if it was called No Woman's Sky it would be clearly sexist game not allowing any women to space-travel!
