I agree with most of what you said, save for this comment:"take the nostalgia goggles off".
I am a multi-console user, I usually get all three of the big contenders for the living room and I even started dabbling with PC gaming this gen. That said, I have done this since the NES era of gaming, and I couldn't be more disappointed right now. Case in point, I have 5 games for my PS3, only 4 of which I like. The ones I enjoyed are MGS4, Little Big Planet 1&2, and 3D Dot Game Heroes (I am not counting all the HD remakes I own because those are from the last gen, really). Out of the 50+ games I've played for this console these 4 were the only ones I liked enough to buy. Do you know how big my catalog of PS1 and PS2 games is? I have 30+ for both those consoles each, all of which are just amazing games. For good contrast I never owned more then 10 games for my original xbox, and I used to consider that the biggest dud in my collection, but not anymore.
Speaking of the xbox I have about 15 360 games, but again - I am going to be honest here - I probably only truly enjoy about 4 of them. This is probably why my 360 collection is mostly made of of traded games I keep cycling through and changing. I can say without a doubt I wouldn't shed one tear if a meteorite hit my 360 collection. I would actually just sell my 360 right now if it wasn't for the fact that Shadow Complex is my favorite game this gen. Yeah.. that's basically all that's stopping me, nothing else... just that. I loved Castle Crashers and Harmony of Despair, but now that most people don't play them they are pretty much moot and dead (such is the problem with multilayer-only games), while Braid and Limbo are also in my steam library, so... yeah. Why own a 360?
And my wii is basically just that. There isn't much of a point to it outside of the Nintendo exclusives, which we all knew were going to be very few and in between. Now that it's run it's course, I am not sorry to see it go. Again, like the PS3, this thing had a drastically smaller selection of good games then it's predecessor. That's really all I can say about it.
Yet, in light of all this, I am still hunting down and playing some PS1, PS2, Dreamcast and SNES games for the first time and they are wowing me. That's not nostalgia talking, that's the here and now. At some point people are going to have to just accept the fact that the previous generations had a much different style of gaming (different flavors for each gen) and some people just liked some of the older ones better. It's really that simple.
