he was making a light hearted joke and was simply asking advice on what kind of controllers to get for a pc so he doesn't misspend money on something that won't work well. What other side could you possibly referring to?
While I agree that he was asking about what controller to get, it's pretty well known that the "PC Master Race" meme justifiably causes discomfort in some and outright fury in others. It should probably be abandonned completely as it is not really a funny joke at all. It's discriminatory on about the same level as any other form of discrimination (try calling yourself the glorious Aryan master race and see how far you get).
I know I'm quite sick of hearing that term thrown around, then defended as if it carries no weight or context, and is just attempted light humour. News Flash if this thread and many others that have devolved into flames in the past have shown: It does carry weight, it is insulting and it is not just light humour, no matter how it is presented.
While I do agree in that the joke has overdone its stay and has been used in a non-ironic/satire way by assholes, I think by context and the general admittance to the person being a newbie we can assume it wasn't meant in any sort of negative fashion, but just a joke to try and break the ice with the crowd. Obviously a few people are unsettled by it, but those typically aren't the people he was aiming a response from. And not to say anyone SHOULDN'T be offended by the joke, but a little bit more diplomacy and passiveness can go a long way if you don't like what someone said. (Not aimed at you, but answering a joke that offended you with a passive aggressive response or an indirect angry response can be the stick that lights the flame)
like if I won tickets to a boston red sox game in the clubhouse, to break ice I'd probably crack some yankee's joke to get a smile or show I'm coming with friendly intentions, even if I have no ire and enjoy many of the yankee's players. Maybe not the best metaphor, but it's what came to mind at the moment.
(Also, I knew someone who had the xbox live name "Aryan Trainer" and "Aryan master race", it was quite impressive how many times he got shot down in chat before even mentioning a peep due to his name. Just a random personal experience I'd let you know about.I didn't approve of it and neither did he, but it was his dad's old username that was free xbox live so he just played on it.)
And no, PC gamers were never called "elitist" because they played "more complicated games" as someone suggested. That's complete BS. The reason some PC gamers are called elitist, is because the shoe fits with a significant enough portion of the PC gaming community. It's not everyone, but there are still many who do fit that description.
Yeah there are quite a few pro-pc players than can be elitist dicks, and I think they let their heads get much bigger than they can handle sometimes with how they deliver messages aggressively rather than in a assertive/passive manner, it's unnecessary and I've seen it more in abundance from pc people. That being said, some if not alot of the answers in here do back up their responses with facts and links to their sources, which is why I think sometimes some "dicks" get rattled up, trying to use objective facts on subjective views and vise versa.
This is obviously not aimed at you Maverick, but I've dealt with this going back decades, as the concept that PC gamers are better than Console gamers is really not a new thing and it is very tiresome.
Now, I'm out. I chose to speak to you since I know you're one of the more level-headed on the Escapist, but I won't be responding to this thread any further.
appreciate the civility.
