We don't celebrate Columbus Day in Canada, in fact Oct. 12 is our Thanksgiving and I certainly have no reason to reconsider that.

I can't watch the video right now because I'm on a computer in my University library, but from what I gather it's saying that Columbus Day should be taken away as a holiday because he was a bad dude?

I would think a much better reason to remove Columbus Day as a holiday would be because he never actually set foot on mainland America. Let it be a holiday in Haiti, but Columbus doesn't really have squat to do with anywhere else.

Get rid of one holiday might as well get rid of them all, because the odds are one minority at the time wasn't happy about it. It's cold way at looking at it but it's true, and the whole "And it's still affecting us today" thing is utter BS, considering most people are unaware of it, and the people that do (That I sadly know) use it as ammo to be rascist again'st people not of colour but now I'm going off topic which may possible make a path covered in gasoline made for smokers... -_____-

No. It doesn't. Get over yourselves.

You might find this hard to believe, but in some countries they don't teach Cristobal Colon because he has no relevance.

Well as the vikings actually set foot on north america (even if they didn't stay permanantly) I still call it Viking day. It's the kind of day where you can raise a battleaxe over your head while screaming like a psycho. It's the kind of day where at dinner if you have a steak that needs to be cut you use said battleaxe. It's when you can sit around a drink beer while pretending anything remotely interesting is on TV.

I actually agree with this, the guy was a douche. but then again, we also have Jackson on the $20 and he was even worse.

But besides that, he didnt even discover the american continent first; the vikings settled here way before him, and possibly the Chinese even before them. So, from now on, lets not get off work or school for a day and blame it on chinese vikings. yey america.

Well, while we're petitioning for special holiday, I'd like a National Remember Some Holidays Are Based On Pagan Holidays Day.

Some, not all.

They say it themselves in the video "it happened a long time ago". Let it the fuck go. To again quote them "with all due respect" just about every country in the damn world had slaves for a bit. We fought a war to free them (plenty could be said about that but however but meh). I have heard this argument before and I once had a teacher that preached that Abraham Lincoln was an evil man who wanted to kill all the slaves. Her argument was something like, sure he released him but then what he didnt do anything for them he just left them there. My argument to her was well he kinda got shot. Her retort was something along the lines of you have detention. Bleh in these times I bet they could probably get a big enough following to actually have columbus day shut down. The guy discovered America and we smack him in the face for just being like every other captain during those, times that being a general dick. To say that Columbus started everything wrong with British rule at the time, the slave trade, and the wars with the natives is like blaming the guy who first taimed a dog because some dogs have killed people.

On a side note my 5th grade teacher had a really neat song about Columbus that completely evades me right now. However it was hilarious and helped everyone remember the facts for the umpteenth time we had taken a test about Columbus. America kinda has a hard-on for its own history.

Me going blah blah blah for 3 paragraphs...
With all due respect, that was from Mass Effect.
DAMMIT! I've never played Mass Effect, otherwise I totally would have caught that.
And I'm applying for a job at BioWare, I'm so embarrassed.

When you do get around to playing, Ashley Williams says it on Virmire during an exchange with Kaidan. Look for it. It's a great line.

I know the dark side, I'm just okay with it. A more powerful civilization pimp-slapped a less powerful civilization. Welcome to the world, here's your ticket, go get it punched.

I can understand the point they're making, but I gotta say, it's a really slippery slope. If you're going to follow that logic, why not reconsider Valentine's Day because the priest Valentine was actually a war criminal? Why not reconsider Independence Day because many of the founding fathers owned slaves?

That said, I do think a nationally recognized holiday for the indigenous people of our nation is warranted. Our country was founded in the bloodshed of these people, and that's something we can't change. I don't think it's unreasonable to, at the very least, show them the respect in modern times that we didn't show them in the past.
Why in the world would we celebrate the losers of a war? We took land from people and forged a civilization. That's how the world works. Rome didn't have a day to celebrate any of the people (Carthage, for instance) it subjugated. We've also provided a better standard of living for Native Americans (and the descendants of slaves) than they'd get almost anywhere else.

We won a war, we don't celebrate the losers.

lol, he didn't even, "discover" America is the funniest part.

My girlfriend and I were discussing this today. It's true, we're celebrating this man for absolutely no reason.

...But its a day off from school so whatever.
I don't even get the fucking day off, in fact I completely forgot it was Columbus Day until about 5 p.m when I checked Newegg, and they had a Columbus day sale.

The sale sucked shit. Anyway, Columbus Day can do whatever the fuck it wants, doesn't help me, doesn't hurt me.

Will do, it looks like a killer game! And if I get the BioWare gig, I might be writing dialogue for Dragon Age. I really hope I get it even just for one project. Freelancing is great and everything but I've gotten used to eating so unless a whole bunch of investment money drops in my lap real soon I have to get a j-j-j-job...
