Use VATS a lot.

Level up Stealth, make Shishkebab and drop some points into melee weapons.

Get Jericho, he's pretty good.

I'm currently playing through Fallout too, and working towards the achievements I missed last time I rushed/played through the game.

If you're interested in Achievements, take some time to read an achievement guide online (this one works for me [www.xbox360achievements.org]), 'cause there are a few missable items required to get certain achievements. But if you do think/realize you've missed something, I'm sure you'll want to play through a few more times and make different decisions that affect your karma. As already mentioned, saving frequently is a safe bet, it's a frustrating feeling when you realize you've made a decision you didn't want, but can no longer change. Saving will also help to make some achievements easier to get, especially the karma ones.

All in all though, it's your call. Exploring, exploding heads (I love you VATs), and having fun is key. Enjoy!

If you've played STALKER before, prepare for ultra easy mode.

Explore everything. "If it moves, shoot it. When it's dead, loot it." It's hard being evil.

Once you're bored of 95% headshots in V.A.T.S. under Small Guns across the map, make an unarmed character and play on Very Hard. (I'll admit the game becomes easy mode after level 10 though, even like this)

And when all else fails, play it to death, and mod it back to life.

Ohhh that doesn't work for Fallout 3 xD

At least not for me, i hated the game for an entire year before i'd gathered enough advice to play it properly.
Properly? there is now way to play it properly.
now if ur playing it mini-maxing thats boring for me

i make a concept and play it like that, no stat boosting no perks the that personality wouldn't get, it makes for a very varied experience if you swich between chars
I just personally didn't find it fun at all until i was given a lot of advice. The game doesn't do well in the way of giving direction, i remember just being thrown into a huge depressing world with no money or ammo and always being weak with no clear way of regaining health.

Since finding out about getting a house, not being too afraid to steal everything and not sticking so strictly to the main objectives the depressing scenery has turned into "super fun happy times wasteland!".

I doubt it's that bad for most people, but if people are asking for advice i'm making the assumption that it isn't going too brilliantly ;D

Have as much fun as you can, and take your time. Don't rush through the story missions, or you'll be left disappointed.
Pretty much this. Break off the main quest and do side quests. Go exploring, and make sure you walk everywhere. You miss half the game when you fast travel.

Oh, and find the dog companion, Dogmeat. He's super useful.

Talking from a combat point of view, it's best to go with either small guns or energy weapons (although you won't find the latter in decent quantities until much later in the game) as small guns can encompass anything from the 10mm pistol to rifles and other sidearms.

Don't worry about the big guns skill too much, again like the energy weapon skill, it's only useful later on when the enemies tend to carry heavier weapons.

If you don't have it already, get the Broken Steel expansion.

I find the game incredibly boring once I hit the level cap, and those 10 extra levels make a huge difference.

High intelligence means more skill points per level.
Repair is a great way to break the economy. :)
Do all the side quests, and go into every building you can*. Explore!

*Except the Dunwhich building, unless you like shitting yourself.
Agree!

Except, being a hardened S.T.A.L.K.E.R veteran, Dunwhich was no problem for me.. but i would suggest avoiding it.

Get Broken Steel immediately. If you put it off, you'll regret it.

Don't listen to people who ***** about difficulty. It`s true that you can survive Very Hard bare-handed with little difficulty, but only if you completely strip out the role-playing that is essential to enjoying Fallout 3.

I say definitely get some strength if you're a hoarder like I am XD
Also I found a high perception comes in handy and as soon as you think yourself a high enough level, go and get a weapon called 'Lincolns Repeater'. It's an epic weapon and my most used weapon in the whole game ;P

Save before you exit the vault, and if you want to make a new character, start from there cause it lets you change all the stats/name/look. That way you don't have to play the opening multiple times like me before you realize thats why that is there.

Also, you need like 25 or so lvls of explosive to get your house in Megaton, so its nice to lvl that up real quick to get that out of the way. Personally, I like lock-picking and repair high because repair saves you money and if you have high lock picking you won't have to backtrack to open something up. As for SPECIAL, I like high endurance... a lot! With high endurance even on the hardest setting it can get too easy at times, actually, I like only 4 intelligence, you get all the most worth while perks and if have Broken Steel and do the side quests you don't have to worry about the missing skill points.

Edit: fallout.wikia.com for when you need a little help.

gotta agree with them, stay the hell away from that place. XD

Also, if you're curious about what a 'Death-Claw' is, just forget about it and promise us you'll never set foot near the Sanctuary. Its for your own good. Make sure to go to the Republic of Dave, it's an awesome country.

watch this it details where to find the 3 of the best weapons in the game:
[link]http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/882301/fallout-3/videos/ignstrategize_fallout3_112608.html[/link]

not including weapons you get from DLC of course but even then the last one still packs one hell of a wallop

If you don't have DLC's (well, even if you do) don't follow the main plot line exclusively. In fact try to forget about it for a while, you won't be late for the party no matter how long it takes you and I found most of the fun to be in the random places you find. Just pick a random direction and start walking, you're bound to find something nice (or not so nice).

1. Explore, explore, explore. It's a big world, so discover it.
2. Pour some points into repair. It's incredibly handy to be able to repair weapons on the fly using parts of other weapons.
3. If you don't feel like ending everything violently (even though it's always fun), put points into your conversation skill.
4. Once you get a character named Fawkes, KEEP HIM!! He is very useful and will keep you alive.
5. Loot. Everything.
6. Feeling brave and want some ammo? Explore downtown. I walked around downtown and the tunnels below for the hell of it, and I died quite a few times. However, I collected so much ammo, I was well off for a good chunk of the game.
7. Save often. Being able to save anytime is life-saving.
8. If you find exploring really fun, unlock the Explorer perk (I think that's what it's called). It'll show off every explorable area on your map.
9. Never say no to stimpacks.
10. Third person to admire yourself. First person to fight.
11. Explore, explore, explore. Like others have said, it's much better if you take your time.
