Hey guys,

I just got Fallout 3, and I love it! I just beat the mission where you talk to Three Dog, the GNR radio guy. Do you guys have any tips for me on how to play this game well from the start? As in "Upgrade this skill the most cause it's the most useful" and likewise.

Well never max a stat (like 10 Strength) because you end up improving each by one with collectibles. If it's maxed you essential lose 1 stat upgrade.

Other than that, the best build I find is a high intelligence, perception and agility one. This comes mainly from Fallout 2, but I think it's good for Fallout 3 aswell. With this build you can improve how fast you can shoot so much that the later game becomes a cakewalk. In Fallout 2 I was able to shoot 6 times per turn and had a perk that let me crit almost 100% of the time, so I could essentially kill 6 enemies in one go. Almost invincible.

Medicine would be a start, nothing like getting more out of a stimpak. Speech always helps too. Repair is another useful skill, it sucks to have broken guns and armor.

Also: A smart man knows when it's time to run like a little *****. The wasteland is an unforgivable place.

High intelligence means more skill points per level.
Repair is a great way to break the economy. :)
Do all the side quests, and go into every building you can*. Explore!

*Except the Dunwhich building, unless you like shitting yourself.

Have as much fun as you can, and take your time. Don't rush through the story missions, or you'll be left disappointed.

If it isn't nailed down its owner lost the right to keep it.

Lockpick and Science are really good to get around everywhere.
High repair will save you loads of caps.
Don't bother with the swift learner perk as its a waste once you hit the level cap. (20, 30 with broken steel add on)

If you blow up Megaton go back there for a suprise...

Also, save your teddey bears, the sugar bombs, holotags, nuka cola quantum, cameras and undestroyed books for quests later on.

Do your best to complete....Uh...chick from Megatonne survival guides quests as soon as possible.

Really though, the player guide to fallout 3 is very well done. Got an extra $20 burning a hole in your pocket, you wont have any buyers remorse. Complete with an excellent map guide for each area...thick ass book.

Ohhh that doesn't work for Fallout 3 xD

At least not for me, i hated the game for an entire year before i'd gathered enough advice to play it properly.

Refrain from rampant kleptomania until you're at a level where you can get away with it.

Trust me, that's a lot harder to do than you might think.

Save often.
If you find something with a unique name hang onto it because it might be fun.
Find a safe place to store spare loot, Megaton House is my personal favourite.
Don't level up Barter because you will not need the skill.
Melee weapons pay off quick and are very fun to use, but energy weapons and small arms are just as fun and very useful in mid-late stages of the game.
Get Broken steel.
Don't kill people if they have a name, unless you have a very good reason.
If you get bored just pick a direction and start walking.
Level up repair a decent way, same for science Lock pick and Speech, how much is up to you.
Don't try to be a master of all weapons, its not going to work.
If you can't decide what loot to take with you try looking at in terms of caps-per-weight.
Get a sweet suit and a sweet hat.
Lincoln?s Repeater is a good weapon, if you find it keep it.
The animal friend perk is a must have, it's a life saver at low levels and fun at high levels.
Never level up a skill to 10, if you get broken steel never level up a skill to nine.
Some quests are a little broken, don't worry about it.
Some items can only be repaired to a worthwhile degree by Trade caravans, avoid their death at all costs.
If you disagree with anything I've said then ignore what I said, its your game.
Finally (I can't make this clear enough)
Save often and in more than one save slot. Fallout 3 has many glitches and the only way to ensure you are safe is to save regularly. Keep one save file at least an hour behind you (in terms of time spent playing), that way you will only lose an hour of playtime if something goes amiss in your other save files.
And remember: Better Dead than Red!

Invest in Repair, it's probably THE most useful skill in the game (Especially hen you get over burdened), small guns are easier to use and far more common. Oh and DO NOT blow up Megaton, yes it gives you evil points, but you get a good central location, a house, a bunch of quests along with one of the most rewarding quests in the game. And overall the people aren't dicks like in Tenpenny Tower (Don't get me started on Tenpenny Tower).

Properly? there is now way to play it properly.
now if ur playing it mini-maxing thats boring for me

i make a concept and play it like that, no stat boosting no perks the that personality wouldn't get, it makes for a very varied experience if you swich between chars

Go out and have fun exploring. There's so much to see and do in that game. You really can't go wrong, though the quest content does get a little bit old after you have done it 70 billion times. Also, once you have played that game too much, if you are playing on PC you can go grab mods to freshen it up :)
