INB4 Surprise Deathclaw.

For me it would have to be stumbling into the fire ant town (Name escapes me), I was like "Holy Fuck! Giant ants!" Went up to shotgun them and they fucking breath fire.

Was totally not expecting that at level 4.
Same here. I about pissed my pants when I went up with a baseball bat and then BAM! My screen fills up with fucking fire..

There's actually a giant ant queen somewhere in the game that ISN'T the one from "Those!"

You get the ant queen pheromone from it, which you can use to help out the girl who's trying to attract the priest in Rivet City.

I've never found it, personally, but a friend of mine (a much more avid Wasteland explorer) found it. I didn't believe her, at first, but she had the pheromones to prove it, and she hadn't even done "Those!" yet.

I am a BIG Fallout 3 fan and love exploring every building, cave, drain sewer and recently on the very north edge parts of D.C. i went inside a car facility and found it to be infested with giant ants.

Killed everything inside, found ammo and caps, then i went deeper inside to the factory department. Killed more ants and found a Giant Ant Queen. I was stunned because i have never seen this creature before and i had thought i killed every creature in the Fallout 3 universe. (and yes I do have all of the DLC and killed every animal in Point Lookout, The Pitt, and the new creatures that came in Broken Steel)

So people of the Escapist, have you ever found a certain creature in Fallout 3 that you were surprised to find?
Sadly, that's not a random encounter of sorts. It's from an actual quest. "Those!"

I haven't been surprised by anything though. Maybe the personalities of the residents of Andale. Now that was a fun stop-off.
The situation he's talking about isn't part of the quest. I don't recall the name of the facility, but there is another area with a Giant Queen Ant. I remember it due to the mass of exploding cars...

On my first time playing Fallout I step out of the vault and head to a small ruined house, whats the first creature I see? A Deathclaw.
So I think to myself, this game levels the enemies like Oblivion right? So it can't be too hard...
It took up all my ammo and grenades (there was a small stockpile nearby) to defeat it, and this was when it started off on half health.

The Corvega Factory, I think.

OT: I compulsively wiki-check stuff--I know, I know, it takes all the fun out of it, so sue me--so I wasn't ever really surprised by anything...until I found my first Albino Radscorpion. Somehow I had missed finding out about those buggers, so having a milky-white arachnoid monstrosity chasing me halfway across the Wastes was truly terrifying. Keep in mind that I hate spiders and scorpions to begin with, so factor some arachnophobia into the equation...not fun.

Was however surprised one time I happily tok a stroll outside the old train station. And heard an infant cry, went to the nearest perambulator(yay I learned a new word) and looked into it.
BANG!!!

That reminds me of a fun anecdote that I'm sure you'll be positively dying to not find out about.

Right at the final moments of the game, you launch your assault on the Jefferson Memorial. Normally, for some reason, the game only released Sarah Lyons into the fray. Well just this once, the rest of the Lyons Pride actually came along. I had worried they'd all get massacred, but no, they had that unconscious invincibility.

Then we travelled through a mass of cars. One bazooka shot from the Enclave troops firing desperately at Prime went astray. It shot behind me, and I thought little of it. But it must've struck a vehicle, because there was an almighty explosion and I jumped for safety. I didn't clear the blast fully and my character was crippled rather badly. Radiation abounded, and I turned grimly behind me to find that all that remained, in this mass of shattered vehicles, of the Lyons Pride was the unconscious figure of Sarah Lyons.

I found no trace of any of the other members of the Lyons Pride, not even weapons, and none were back at the Citadel when I continued the game via Broken Steel. It is quite possibly the single most mysterious thing that has ever happened to me in my long gaming career.

Only when I first starting. After a while, I knew about everything, so nothing came as a shock any more.
When I saw that G.A.Q., my thought wasn't "holy shit, what's that?", more "I thought the one in Marigold Metro was the only one." But otherwise, yeah, nothing really comes as a surprise.

I found an Enclave soldier in-between megaton and the supermarket when I first played FO3 (at the very beginning of the game), i'll tell you this I got owned the first time round but I made sure that he was headless on the second time round.

One time, I was in VATS fighting some raiders (at that drive-in place down near the Dunwich building) when a Giant Radscorpion cartwheeled past.

I still have no idea where it came from.

Walking out of the Vault and stumbling into Grayditch.

"Fire Ants, eh? Well this will be- MOTHER OF GOD THEY SHOOT FIRE!!!"

I avoided that town, only to freak out when I later encountered a Giant Ant Queen.
I was genuinely scared when I ran into that monster.

An encounter with a Feral Ghoul Reaver in the Warrington Station tunnels was a very painful experience. :(

They probably got clipped into the underworld. They'll be hanging out underground somewhere near Springvale school.
