I keep it out of the fridge if it doesnt need to be cooled to combat expiration (as the recently opened bottle of garlic sauce does). Reasoning behind it? I have more cupboard space than I do fridge space, can put a few extra beers or bottles of cola where the ketchup would otherwise be ^^

Mostly I figure if you go through them quickly enough that expiration isn't a factor it's purely personal taste.

"Once opened, store this ketchup in a cool, dry place and use within 5 weeks." - Heinz ketchup. So yeah, it doesn't need to be in the fridge. The only sauce I keep in the fridge is mayonnaise.

*EDIT* I checked my new ketchup bottle, and apparently they've changed it to "Once opened, refrigerate and use within 8 weeks."

I keep the ketchup and mustard in the fridge as well, why is it such a big deal? I don't get it... Anyway you're not alone. Let's form The Ketchup/Mustard In The Fridge Alliance.

EDIT: I also have the bread and vegetables in the fridge, but not fresh bread..

We didn't keep them in the fridge when I was a kid because we had 6 kids. So after two or three meals it'd be all gone. As an adult with a family of me and my wife we keep it in the fridge as that's what it says on the label.

The bigger debate I've had with friends is if Syrup goes in the fridge. (IT DOESN'T!)

I've always been taught that stuff like ketchup goes bad if you leave it outside the fridge... I guess if we had an unopened bottle we could keep it in the cupboard or something, but that's hypothetical.
It wouldn't matter during winter because the difference in temperature inside and outside the fridge is very small.
