While I think it's awesome that the kid has a Death Note, perhaps carrying it to school wasn't the smartest idea. Some school staff seem to have a moral obligation to flip out over nothing.
yea it wasn't smart but how many of us were in 8th grade
probably a good thing he dint get expelled over this the school did the right thing with 3days OOS

I laughed at the whole justin bieber thing.

Any way this is a joke. Theres no proof of any threat just a fan of the anime with a book.

Sure, its normal to wish someone dead when you're angry at them

However, if you're constantly angry at them and wish they were dead all the time, then that is a problem.

If he had simply written it on the bus while bored/angry that understandable, but carrying it around represents something a bit too fucked up for my tastes.

Either way, the schools decision to suspend him is totally 1000% justified. And the mother should try to talk to her son about his problems instead of trying to place the blame on the bullies. The bullies may never change their behavior, but she should try to get her son to change his reaction.
Sorry, but you are way off base. It's just some poor, bullied kid venting his frustration by emulating something he saw on a cartoon. Nothing more, nothing less.

Pfft, writing down? That is so last decade. You keep a mental note of all the people you want dead. So far I've got one, but damn he deserves to be hit by an oncoming train.

you could understand that people that have never seen deathnote could be a little creeped out.

I understand why they care about it, but it seems like it would be a good way to let some anger out. Suspending the kid is not really a good thing to do, instead they should have a sit down with him and explain to him why what he did is wrong.

Okay in all seriousness I think we can agree on a rule of thumb that if you might forget a person's name whom you wish death upon (hence writing it down) you're probably overreacting.

Maybe the person should come up with a more effective document. Such as an exit strategy.

I never said he had any intent on acting on this. Simply put, since they found out the kid was feeling this way, it makes more sense to help him rather than to simply shrug it off as boys will be boys. You never know.

I find it even funnier that they confirm the kid is being picked on, but rather than help the kid not be picked on, they'd rather just suspend him due to nonsense like this. Way to help the kid! Way to go creating a positive self esteem in him (something that it's obvious the kid lacks). You're pushing the kid to more likely shoot people because he's going to be frustrated and give up on the system because of shit like this.

If you want to see one possible reason behind why school shootings occur, this may be it.
The mom confirms that the kid is being picked on. Schools do not go on a basis of he said she said. The note is proof against the boy, but he simply saying that he is being picked on is not proof that he is.

If it is true, which I do believe it is, the school simply cannot punish the boys for being bullies without any sort of "evidence". No doubt, they'll give them a stern talking to, but they have no basis to punish them.

Wishing people dead is, in my opinion, a very poor way of venting your frustration. Plus it certainly isn't going to help him to stop being bullied when people find out he's writing down names on a death list.

Also I don't blame the school for their reaction to this, regardless of what the kid's intention was. Because if he actually was using this as a type of hit list, the school would get so much flak for doing nothing about it. They're not allowed to just ignore it and assume the kid isn't going to do anything extreme.

So regardless of whether or not you think wishing people dead is a healthy way to relieve stress, I don't think you can really berate the school for their decision.

The parents are overreacting, the police is under-reacting (yes, that's not a word). And the mother speaks of it like bullying is supposed to be a natural thing in school.

"... certain that he never meant harm to the 8 boys-"

Oh, definately not.

"Or the one pop star."

LOL. No, we all want at least his career dead.

well if some one does it everyday, picks on you, at that age you get some pretty strong feelings and yeah i don't see why the people on the list aren't being looked into in terms of bulling.

Most bullies don't act in the face of teachers. Usually it's "He's doing this to me" or "I watched him do that to that kid". So, I guess, what do you propose they do?

I saw stuff like that in the news a lot when the anime first went to America. I think it's funny how much people overreact to things like that sometimes. Still, it's one of those 'zero tolerance' situations.

They suspended him for merely writing down the names and dates? Wow. I mean, that's nothing. It's not like he took the time to craft an elaborate scenario in which his tormentors slowly and painfully die alone and afraid whilst turning on one another in an environment that reeks of eminent death and continued with more enemies after the bus containing his bullies and twenty other unsavory children was sank slowly into the bay and then watched from the sidelines with a quiet smirk as the events unfolded before him and his best friend and ex both of whom betrayed him burn to death screaming and separated in an inferno that sweeps across five other houses killing twelve more innocent people just for the sake of believable collateral damage and then ripping out and burning the pages describing the scenes to eliminate the evidence and then finally keeping the book locked away determined not to use it again but quite sure that someday somewhere he would require its dark power once more.

No, I never put a lot of thought into what I'd do in this situation, why do you ask?
