Play on higher difficulties.

The commando is useless as a class, severely outcompeted.
It's only useful when you have a support, medic, demo and sharpshooter already, and then only as a supplementary. The only thing worse than a commando is the firebug on the higher difficulties.
You couldn't be any more wrong about the Commando. I used to go around as SS/Support with a friend that only played commando. We'd never die and have the most kills on the team. Before L4 you're useless against the larger foes, but after that you can down a scrake alone and deal a serious amount of damage to fleshers.
As for your comments about the Firebug...well, he can take out a huge chunk of enemies at higher perk levels. Only thing he's useless against is the fleshpound because he doesn't have the firepower to handle it alone.

Anyways, people play different perks because they have different specialities. The commando, sharpshooter and support take out the bigger stuff while the firebug demolitions and berserker deal with the trash. The medic sort of hangs around pretending to be useful and begs for cash from the rest of the team.
My favourite right now is the support class. Huge damage, can take an FP alone on hard, and you can carry loads.

I play Sharpshooter simply because I love the M14. That's really my only reason. I don't play online or on any difficulty above easy, so it really doesn't matter for me.
Aw man, the best thing about the game is the online, you should check it out!

It used to be Sharpshooter, when I played a lot with the Escapist peeps.

Now it's Demolitions guy. Why? Because I can kill zombies in one shot on Beginner difficulty, even the tougher ones. IT'S SO AWESOME!

Also because my computer kind of sucks and lags some times, and in those cases, Demolitions is the most useful.

I like the sharpshooter since the lever action rifle pretty much kills them instantly with overpowered accuracy.

Ive been using it alot on the new portal map (at is clever and fun to play)

When I get lag due to connection, I just pick the firebug. :p

Wtf
When I'm playing as medic I have too much money.

Honestly. I play at least 3 perks per round

on a long game:

1-4 Support - cut through enemies with ease with the lowest level shotgun
5-9 Medic - The team needs one. Medic also helps if you're bad with cash.
10-Patriach: Demo - the last levels you need all the firepower you can get. Carrying all the arms possible and just make a big pile of explosives

Favorite perk is medic and though Im not the biggest KZ player, reached lvl5 in it whilst my next most leveled class is lvl3.

Reasons why I love being a medic:
-More speed and armor+more heal= can kite and be chased quite comfortably, unless you're chased into a corner you should always be amongst those still alive.
-The medic gun: Can heal my team mates from far away+its uber cheap and effective in controlled bursts against the weaker enemies.
-Due to medic gun being cheap and spawning with armor (even if you don't you get massive discount for it) money isn'a problem and of all the classes, a medic can just come in mid way during a game and immediately be effective due to the non cost of getting basic gear, picking up weapons from the fallen if need be (and giving them back once round is over of course!).

That is a sign of a fail medic. Wtf does the medic need cash for? You can immediately afford medic gun+spawn with armor so you have your basic gear, then you get lever action rifle next round for some basic firepower and shotties later, working your way up to something with more boom but this isn't what one becomes a medic for.

Support Specialist. Unloading that double barreled hunting shotgun into the face of a charging Fleshpound or Scrake is just SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO enjoyable its almost orgasmic.

Commando is also fun but because I enjoy using the Bullup and SCAR which just seem over powered to me. Also never ending ZED time.

I also enjoy Firebug, but only if the map is really wide open.

Medic, Sharpshooter, Berserker, and Demo, I never had much fun with their weapons/roles. Except the Handcannon. God I love picking up one of those things <3

Firebug is fun, but a pain to level because I prefer the MAC-10 to the Flamethrower. Sadly, only the latter gets you perk experience.
That's news to me, I could have sworn that the incendiary ammo and grenades gave you EXP for their fire damage.

OT: I like running Firebug until I've got the cash to get all of the gear for demo in one shot (or any class that the top weapon is expensive as hell to buy), and that tends to work quite well for me. If I'm not doing that I bounce between the classes quite often, as I like playing as all of them.

As a rank 3 commando with a scar, I managed to hold out against a fleshpound and two scrakes in a singleplayer game.

Anyway, my favourite class is the sharpshooter (with a crossbow), for the simple reason that they can take out a scrake or lower in one hit and a fleshpound in two or three. With handcannons, they can also easily take any lesser specimens.

I play on normal, by the way.

Medic - When we started playing I couldn't decide on a perk while my buddies all found their favourites. We needed a medic, so I stepped up. Haven't really changed since, it's surprisingly good fun.

Because no one ever plays medic longer than a few rounds. They always take medic just to earn money. Either that, or they'll take medic for the extra armour and resistances and then beg for money so they can get a crossbow or something. I've never actually seen a medic who heals the other players. Still, if you get caught self healing while they're busy being useless, they'll hear the injection sound and start talking shit.

As previously mentioned, the crossbow/hand cannon on the sharpshooter make for fun times, but generally I'll mix it up. I'll pretty much always (assuming I have the cash) switch to demolitions for the patriarch though.

When playing with a below-average team on normal difficulty, would you still stand by this? What you say is correct, but it does depend heavily on your team, the commando has the speed (fast reload, high ammo) to survive even when no-one else is around in my opinion, although it's true, you can do this with a support. However I would say that playing like this is suicide for Demos and Sharpshooters.

I know this isn't good tactics for serious play and on higher difficulties it is very hard to pull off well. (But it's really fun)
On normal difficulty any class can solo, even with a rubbish team.

No, the Commando can't take an FP alone on hard unless he has a hell of a lot of range. A raged FP will annihilate any commando, and a sharpshooter would take out the FP much faster than the commando at that range anyway. Any closer and a Demos pipe bomb will kill it, if it lives a Support with a double-barrel or AA12 can finish it off. The commando isn't necessary, and is a waste of a spot if you're lacking one of the core classes.
The commando would have the most kills on the team because it's killed all the weakest enemies, it's easy to get the most kills as a commando, but as a perk it is valueless on the higher difficulties unless you have players to spare. The real problems are scrakes, husks and fleshpounders, the very things a commando is useless against.

The firebug, at level 6, is useless on suicidal and hell on earth because his fire doesn't do nearly enough damage to actually kill them, while scrakes will just catch on fire, charge your front line and not only chainsaw them but also proceed to burn them thanks to the firebug. The fire also blocks the view of sharpshooters who could otherwise take out/stun the scrakes.
On hard, the firebug needs to be level 5-6 to be of any use, any lower and your supports/sharpshooters will be killing them anyway, provided their view isn't blocked.

I find I play as Demolition the most, which is perfect for crowd control, except for the damned smoke.

However, I got to Level 6 for Sharpshooter first, strangely enough.
