I say it real conversations in a complete deadpan manner. I do this because people who use IM use lol at absolutly anything. Not because it's funny, just so they can use it.

It makes sense to me, anyway.

...I was going to write "lol" but, now I think I might get flamed!

Seriously, though, only ever out aloud if I and my group of friends are pissfarting around. Then generally we are playing with words, reference jokes, internet slang and the like. In that case, "lol" becomes more a silly reference joke that inspires laughter rather than an expression of laughter itself.

Honestly though, why WAS "lol" adopted as text-speak for "laughter" instead of, say "haha" or even (dare I say it) "larfs"? I don't know, when I was a kiddly I struggled to learn all the text speak stuff, it never really seemed to make life easier...

Anyway, that's my gripe with "lol"

Haha.

who here hates/dislikes it when people say L o L or lul in conversation, i don't mean typing it, but saying it vocally, personally always bugged me a lot.
Gaahhh! I warned you about this! It's the most God-awful, irritating, low-brow, moro....

*ahem*

I personally do not agree with the practice of actually speaking text-speak.

I say "lol" in real life when I want to get away with being sarcastic to older people or with mocking a misfortune and "Bahaha!" on the interbutts.

Anyone that gets pissy over language needs to learn how to play real life.

So pathetic.

I use it is a joke occasionally in a multiplayer game to the friend next to me. It's always in the lolololololololol version though. Happens when I'm doing something stupid or annoying intentionally. Hate it when it is sincere though. Any form of text or meme speech annoys me actually (in many cases it annoys me even on the net).

But I hate it online too. I hate most of those words that was created on the line. So maybe my opinion is void too?
Same here. Especially u, r and y. How can you be so lazy that you can't be bothered to type a three letter word?
Freakin true...

I don't really mind.

If they just use that as a form of telling me what they said was a joke or something I said was funny, that's fine.

I just can't stand it when all they say is ZOMGROFLMAOBRBPOS!!!!!!!!11!!

I sometimes say it during the awkward silence that follows someone telling a terrible joke.

Does that make me a bad person?

If someone posts 'LOL' on the internet, you know it's an acronym and you know what it means, however more and more often you see people posting 'lol', which is not in acronym form. I use this "word" ironically and aloud to make fun of people who don't capitalize what they should.

Kinda strikes me as the resurgence of "droll" as a common usage term, although quite out of nowhere, but fits since a lower case lol is rarely used in an actual laugh out loud situation, more a "how very witty, would you like some caviar on that stick up your backside?" kind of exchange.

This used to be mark of nerdom but now I can hear it from "normal" people from my class, same thing with OMG. I blame WoW and Facebook.

Me. It's kind of redundant. Why/when did they replace "haha" in standard conversation with "lol"?
