Saying it in a conversation is pretty weird, to say the least.

btw. Lul means "dick" in my language.

Heh, I find a lot of people who complain about things like this and are massive hypocrites. One complains about noobish and screechy people online, and is like them in almost every aspect when he starts to lose.

I've managed to rehabilitate myself to such an extent that I don't even type "lol" anymore, or even really use emoticons.

As this is the internet, it makes me seem rather devoid of life every so often, and sarcasm really doesn't translate well here at all.

I will often say "I did it for the lulz", is that a bad thing? Other than that, when I want to indicate my laughter, I laugh.

Allow me to use this topic as a jumping off point for a topic that causes me a lot of frustration.

The internet is a stupid place. It's full of stupid things and stupid people and stupid inside jokes. People (and by people I mean younger people, let's say undergraduates and younger) spend heinous amounts of time dicking around on the internet. As a result they are absolutely saturated with internet culture and associate real life with the stupid bullshit they see on the internet. Saying things like 'omg' and 'lol' in real life are manifestations of this saturation but it's not all. Also part of this is talking using lolcat speak, replacing 'the' with 'teh' etc. Let me a couple other examples:
Tentacles=hentai? I believe I was talking about squids or seafood in a conversation, a person came into the conversation and immediately heard tentacles and assumed we must be talking about hentai, since that's the only possible thing that has to do with tentacles.
Anthropomorphic/animals=furry? This one is way more frustrating to me. The idea that talking animals is somehow immediately associated with furries. If you were to watch the old Disney version of Robin Hood, would you think it was about furries? If so, you've been on the internet for too fucking long. Anthropomorphizations existed for a long time before the concept of furries emerged. Let me give a specific example of this bullshit: My friends and I had just decided to take a small break in regular D&D so that I take a break as DM for a while. My friend (let's call him) T decided to do a short, 3 session campaign about a group of talking farm animals attempting to defeat an evil warlord trying to put DRM on all their music. At the mention of "talking animals", my roommate (let's call him) C, whispers to me, "Man I really hope T isn't a furry, cause I would have to stop playing D&D with him if he was." I said, "What the fuck makes you think he's a furry?" To which he responded, "Because we're playing as talking farm animals." Wait, what? Is Orwell's Animal Farm now about strange sexual inclinations Orwell had? No? I thought not. Why? Because to assume that talking animals refers to a specific sexual deviancy is fucking idiotic.

Why is it that youth culture is so saturated by the internet normally intelligent people say the stupidest things? Seriously, fuck internet culture. Figuratively.

And my sister's recently started using the internet for things other than games and music and I've told her that if she ever uses it I'll piss on her pillow.
That's way too harsh of you. It's your opinion, don't force it on her. Saying LOL doesn't make her retarded.
On the contrary, I think it might be a fine indication.

The only form of it that a few friends and I use is "lulzy" when describing something that was bad but funny, like watching someone else's super lame drama, for example.

And I hear people actually say "O-M-G" quite often. And "B-R-B". Both are equally stupid because it's the same amount of syllables to actually say the words. The only thing stupider is when they say "berb" in place of "B-R-B". Grrrrr D:<

I hate it when people vocalize pwnd...or really any internet speak for that matter. I actually heard someone say "Qyoo Qyoo" the other day...are you freaking serious?!?!?! sigh.

People can type out whatever nonsense they want, but speaking it is more than lame.

Don't know anyone that says 'lol' or 'O-M-G' or anything like that.

I usually just laugh... it does kind of annoy me when someone says lol in a conversation though.

I tend to say "lulz" in an ironic sense.

Really, Fox News paved the way for me to say 'lulz' in normal conversation ever since they said "epic lulz" in that report on Anonymous.

I hate it both written and in real conversations.

Written conversations turn so wooden when using acronyms like that, and when it comes to real conversations I'm on the "show don't tell" side of it.
Agreed. What pisses me off the most is how so many people use it at the end of every godamn sentence, regardless of how funny what they are saying is.

"I am doing Uni work lol."

Not at all.

I know someone who got ranked amongst the top 10 science side high school exams, who's socially popular and is definitely not stupid or a book worm, but yet uses LOL for no goddamn reason in text speak. Or facebook speak. Same thing, really.
I don't see how the bold parts are an indicator of intelligence. The first is High School science, and is based upon formula's which merely require a good memory, not intelligence. The latter is completely irrelevant.

I don't see a problem with it. I do it occasionally, but it's mostly a joke thing.
It would get on my nerves if someone verbally said it all the time.

Between my circle of friends we are aware of the growing issue of people saying it outloud, but we say it to each other now and then sarcastically. However hearing it from a random person who says it deliberately makes me cringe

Saying "lol" and anything else from 'teh internets' has never bothered me and never will. What does bother me is people who complain about it. The whole point of language is to convey meaning and if the meaning you want to get across is best summed up by "lol" (including any connotations that go with it) the by all means use it.

On a side note, if you use "yr" or "ur" to mean "your/you're" then that's fine, but if you say "your" and you mean "you're" (or vice versa) then a tiny part of me will curl up and die. I seriously hate that. :p
