I've found myself quite addicted to TF2 as of late, and subsiquently I've often found myself as the only female on whatever server I reside. This results in a lot of teasing and trolling, both of which I expect going in.

What I wasn't quite prepared for was how many guys seriously seek relationships through such meetings. I mean really, I've played MMORPGs before and never have I come across so many desperate guys in my life. One guy said if ever I find myself in southern Pennsylvania I should look him up, just before signing off. And so many others have ended up moaning and groaning when I mention the TF2 hat my boyfriend gave me for my birthday (and the physical version he bought and packaged like a gift in the game).

So, fellow ladies, how often do you find this happening? Not being teased or trolled for being a female on the Internets, but being creeped and hit on, by completely straight-faced guys?
I don't have time to read the rest of the thread since I'm about to head out and someone probably already said similar things, but, there's a few reasons for the moaning. One, By "telling" people about the thing your boyfriend bought you, not only are you drawing attention to yourself like "HEY GUYS LOOK IM A FEMALE! I LOVE MY BF SOO MUCH", but you're also just rubbing salt in the wound of all the guys that don't have girlfriends. Your intent I'm sure is not to cause trouble, but it doesn't come off as that way, especially when so many girls do it. Like you said, there's not many girls, so when tons of the 'few' girls do it, It gets old fast. I'm sure you don't notice most guys going on about how they're so happy their girlfriend bought them this or that, and it's because there's not much reason to say it, and people aren't likely to care.

As for being hit on, that's another rant for another time.

That statement should really be on a T-shirt.
Totally agreed. I'd so buy that shirt.

OT: Well, as it has been said... I'm a guy, and I don't hit on girls online. I have female friends on the internet, sure. But I don't flirt with them.

I think girls need to get over themselves.
They're not as rare as they think.
And not even half as special as they'd like to imagine themselves as.
And I see (or rather hear through mics) plenty of chicks on TF2.
You say you have met many women online, yet your statement makes me think that you have never even talked to one. I have never once met a female online who has made a big deal about her gender. I have met men who go nuts over women playing games, but that hardly seems like the fault of the girl. You are placing the blame at the feet of the wrong people.

The ridiculous bold lettering was a nice touch, by the way.

I don't think I would ever hit on a girl playing online because its not the reason why I am online and am pretty sure its not the reason she came online either.

I have never flirted online. But I've seen plenty of shamefull flirting online. And it was pathetic. Just like RL flirting.

Being that said, 2 out of my best friends online met each other online before I met them and are currently having a happy relationship. I still can't believe how this guy managed to successfully flirt with a girl online (maybe the fact he is a pretty good artist has something to do?)

Man, I'm a guy and people online still freaking hit on me. Either the numbers of homosexual males have risen by a good percent over the past few years or they're all just hoping I'm a chick.

[sup]Seriously. I play Maplestory for two weeks and it was just non-stop messages about... terrible and horrible things.[/sup]

uh I don't know what you play but I'm tired of hearing this "Randomnickname: So any girls in here besides me?"

If that's not attention whoring, tell me what it is.

I play World of Warcraft, on the Scarlet Crusade. Some of the guys in my ex's guild actually hit on me, one invited me out to Louisiana and offered to pay for the WHOLE trip, while a couple gave me their numbers, and/or asked for mine. About 2 years ago, I found myself in this one guild. There was like a debate or something going on about me being a woman or something, so I posted my myspace link in gchat and the one paladin, Rhay, actually wanted to friend me, and I figure "what the heck sure." So I told him I wasnt giving up my last name or email, so he gave me his link and last name. Turns out he is super cute. He kept flirting with me and I went along with it, and we ended up having a guy /gquit on us for it. If I can find the link I'll post it... But yeah, the paladin said something about I never call him or something, so I said "I dont have your number I cant call" in guild chat and he whispered me and asked if I'd call if he gave me his number, so I said "sure" and we never stopped talking. I move into a different guild, and was asked out by a few different guys, one in Green Bay... another guy invited me out to Green Bay for my 21st birthday. I usually /gquit if the guys are a real pain. I actually had Rhay get on an alt and invited the alt to the guild and tell the gm who was 16 and some 14 yr old off and be all protective and act like we were dating. I never started playing WoW looking for a relationship, and neither did Rhay. We just played, ended up talking and everything, and are sort of together. He no longer plays WoW, but we still talk and are friends and whatnot. Just trying to get our crap together to actually meet and see if this will work. I mean, I talk to him on skype and everything pretty much daily and we really just... clicked for lack of a better explanation. I still play on occasion and still get hit on whenever I'm asked about gender, but I'll lie and say I have a boyfriend and most of the time the guy(s) back off. For the times that the guys don't, there's always /ignore(playername) and /gquit and there's always the "leave group" option during dungeons/raids. And in sever cases of harassment, there's a GM ticket I can open. Only had to open a GM ticket twice. I just stopped saying I'm female unless directly asked or there's a comment made about me where I can just say "my boyfriend thinks so" and it's dropped.

Point of the story, either do NOT say you're female unless asked, or lie and say you're taken in some way.

Here's a photobucket link to having the guy /gquit on us for anyone interested:

I haven't ever heard anyone sat that.
That being said, a few attention whores don't represent all of the female gender. Acting as though all women should bear the burden of the ego of a few fools is unfair.

I feel this. I'm a girl, and used to play Counter Strike Source with a group of great guys. I did it for the social thing. Now those guys don't really play, and as a result, neither do I. I still on occation get on when I need to shoot someone in the head. But when I do, I don't use the mic anymore. I get the full range of guys that either try to troll me, or pick me up. After one 20 minute map of CS:S, if I used my mic, I will get 2 or three friend requests.

Never said a few attention whores represent the female gender. But it's just like kids on CoD, not all of cod players are kids, but as soon as one enters, he starts yelling with his squeaky voice. With females, you never notice them, untill one of them starts attention whoring. So I probably stumbled upon PLENTY of female gamers, but of those who I noticed were females, 80% were whoring.

I am the owner of a Y chromosome.

Frequently, however, I pretend to be female when playing MMORPGs. Hilarity ensues.

I'm going to go ahead and 2nd that. Except I was in a couple guilds/dungeon groups/raids where some females have done that. I personally never have. I don't really care if I'm the only female in the group. I'm not looking for a relationship, or attention. I gave up my myspace link after I was sitting there being insulted by both males and females alike. "Rhay" was the only one that actually looked at my myspace, after being told "dude don't she's probably a dog" and his response was "No she's pretty cute." You're going to make friends and enemies no matter what your gender. If someone's going to try and be an attention whore, then that's on them, not their gender.

Getting hit on once is fine. Getting hit on every time you log into your guild by the same people is irritating.

That 80% does NOT speak for the other 20% of us than you very much. And that 80% is of your own personal poll. For the majority of games I've played, including WoW, only about 10% are attention whoring. The 90% don't care, they're there for the game, NOT guys. In my case, I was there for the game, NOT guys. I just happened to be harassed enough to give up my myspace link, and what happened after was NOT on my agenda. I didn't start playing WoW looking for attention, I happened to be dating a guy, and that guy got me into WoW. We werent together when I met the guy I've been talking to for the past 2 years, and I didnt go into the guild looking for a relationship or attention. So your 80% is not everyone's 80%.

As a male ((and a married one at that)) i can explain this.

Its the desperate need for physical interaction that drives these "Nerds", "Geeks, and "Losers" ((as called by many)) that drives them to act this way towards females.

Its rare when a woman, especially an attractive one, to play video games and have any sort of skill, ((Im not saying women are bad, im saying most arnt up to par with the "Hardcore Male Gamer" demographic)) it makes them all the more desirable. Because these days its hard for most gaming males to find a woman to relate with.

All females in this thread, take it as a compliment. When a man hits on you, its because hes lonely, and sad. Show him pity, not anger, as he may never be half as lucky as your current boyfriend.

Please note that when I say attention whoring I do not say actively seeking a boyfriend, I mean "I'm a girl look at me, give me gold" etc etc bullshit.

And the reason that percentage is so high is because I DON'T go around asking if people are guys or girls, I just play, don't give a crap. That's the reason that when I know someone's a female is because she is purposely rubbing it in front of EVERYONE'S FACE which is, as I stated earlier, attention whoring.

I am talking about random gaming here, of course. When you get in clans and stuff the percentage lowers a lot, as you can tell if someone's female by their voice without them directly telling you.

Ellen page is an absolutely amazing Canadian actress but she never really does any big hollywood films. Then again how do you not know who ellen page is, she played juno for christs sake.
Wrong, she played Kitty Pride in the X-men trilogy ;)
So, yeah, I like her too <.<

OT: If I was a woman online, I'd probably hide as well... When you think of the chance of meeting idiots online, is it so odd they usually try to be as inconspicuous as possible?

Best Regards :)

Also, wait, what?
