I think girls need to get over themselves.
They're not as rare as they think.
And not even half as special as they'd like to imagine themselves as.
And I see (or rather hear through mics) plenty of chicks on TF2.
You say you have met many women online, yet your statement makes me think that you have never even talked to one. I have never once met a female online who has made a big deal about her gender. I have met men who go nuts over women playing games, but that hardly seems like the fault of the girl. You are placing the blame at the feet of the wrong people.

The ridiculous bold lettering was a nice touch, by the way.
uh I don't know what you play but I'm tired of hearing this "Randomnickname: So any girls in here besides me?"

If that's not attention whoring, tell me what it is.
I haven't ever heard anyone sat that.
That being said, a few attention whores don't represent all of the female gender. Acting as though all women should bear the burden of the ego of a few fools is unfair.
Never said a few attention whores represent the female gender. But it's just like kids on CoD, not all of cod players are kids, but as soon as one enters, he starts yelling with his squeaky voice. With females, you never notice them, untill one of them starts attention whoring. So I probably stumbled upon PLENTY of female gamers, but of those who I noticed were females, 80% were whoring.
It's not that there are that many attention whores, it's simply that you notice them more when they are female. Besides, the same could easily be said for males. What I'm trying to say is that there the gender of the jackass online has nothing to do with the fact that they are a jackass.

This goes against my better judgement of feeding the troll but whatever I'll set the record straight.

Play CoD for 10 minutes online, if you haven't been called "fag" by a young person within the first 5 you must have stepped into an alternate dimension or something.
You're the sort of guy who doesn't ever partake in any conversation and when someone says a joke, you immediatly start ranting about how immature it was, and when people talk about something you don't like, you make snark remarks about all the way through.
News to me. Guess you know me better than I do. I've made snide comments against CoD in the past but that's the only one.

You are the problem in which gamers face, you're the arrogent self-rightous person who never partakes in any social interaction, you're the trolling over-sophisticated annoying guy who onloy plays Fallout 2 and claims how much better it is then modern games
Never played Fallout 2. How is it?

Fallout 3 you'll start telling everyone it's not a real game and start explaining how "Amazing" Fallout 2 the Grand Borefest was.
Fallout 3 is great fun. Had a ball playing it. Didn't like New Vegas much. Oh well.

END RANT.
Feel better now? Next time when you insult someone over a satirical comment like using voice communication, re-read it and be sure you understand what they're talking about. Ciao.

Why don't you grow a brain? I never said anything about meeting women online. I'm not painting myself as some big online playa who gets all the internet skanks in every TF2 game I play.

I said I see them. I play lots of different servers and there are girls in most of them. And not only that, there really isn't a lot of noticable difference in treatment of male or female players in these servers.

OP mentioned that she was often the only one in most games who had ovaries and as a result would constantly and instantly be hounded and harassed by all the poor, sexually-deprived, testosterone-driven males in the server. My question to her is: what kind of Italian/Mexican ghetto servers are you playing on?
Wow, that end part got pretty racist. Anyway, I'm not entirely sure how you turned talking to women into having sex with all of them, but putting aside that part of your argument, I can say that I have been harassed quite a lot on a variety of servers. Either you play on amazing servers at all times or you are just extremely oblivious because you are not the one being harassed. I'm not saying that all people are assholes to women at all times, I'm just saying that this is, indeed, a problem, and trying to act as thought it isn't is foolish.

the conversation through textbox is usualy something like:

anonymous:are you a boy or a gurl?
me: um...girl
anonymous: how old are you??
me:18(lie btw, not giving my info out)
anonymous: do you want to cyber?
me has left the game

OT: never ever play territory war! (a lot)
I believe the proper answer to that question is "Hahaha fuck no. Go away" Then leave.

Or at least it's much more entertaining.

OT: I'm a guy, and I've seen it happen but I don't get involved. I really don't give a crap whether you're a guy or girl you're getting treated just like every other random person from the interwebs.

If I ever do bother to reveal my gender, the response is always a 50/50 split between childlike admiration/sexual comeons and instantaneous hatred/sexist jokes. From my own experience, only about 1 in 10 male gamers responds with indifference or basic respect, though it varies between game communities. XBL is obviously the worst, but I've found Steam servers to be surprisingly pleasant. It also seems like there's a larger percentage of women on Steam, but I may just be imagining things.

Keep in mind OP, if one server seems like it's full of assholes, it doesn't hurt to try another.

I'm a guy and I once played as a female Spartan in Halo: Reach just to mix things up a bit.
I then got a creepy message in my voicemail box that was so blatantly trying to chat me up. One way to tell was that the guy told me I 'played pretty well' even though I was actually the LOWEST scoring player in that match.

I switched back to male and spoke on my communicator in my manly voice and I've never heard from him since.

I don't feel like sorting through all these posts to add this back in with my original post... So please forgive me.

The guy I met on WoW, that I'm sort of seeing, his paladin (Rhay) is a female toon. He once was in Goldshire and since he was on the Scarlet Crusade, some other male started hitting on him in whispers. Of course, he didn't pursue it, but the guy wouldn't leave him alone and gave "Rhay" his vent and everything. So, he got on and said to the guy "hey baby what's going on?" The guy whispered him and said something like "is that you?" which he replied "yeah man that's me" or something and the guy got all apologetic and everything for it, while he said it was OK, female Draenei in Goldshire, it happens.

So, in this case it's the guy's stupidity for assuming someone's a female in a game based on the character's gender because obviously males play female characters. As he put it "depends on if I want something to look at or if I'm going for stats which race and class I'll play." He had a female Draenei paladin and a male Blood Elf mage on a different server. As for me, my WoW toons are all female, but I rarely get hit on for my character being a female. I rarely get hit on now period. I try to stay out of the conversations and only give my gender out when directly asked or if someone starts doing what they did to my friend to me. If someone assumes I'm female because my character is female, I think someone once said "(name) is hot" or something along those lines, which I responded "my boyfriend thinks I am" and they let it go.

I've never been hit on to the point where someone's asked me to get on vent and given me their vent info. I have been invited out to Green Bay; Austin, Texas; Louisiana; and San Diego. The only place I've ever truly considered going is San Diego, and that's because I was asked to attend the Marine Corps Ball by the guy I've been talking to for 2 years, and I've seen him on skype and we talk constantly. But we'll see if that ever happens.

Once again, everyone's gaming experience is different. Some can be similar, but overall, we all have different experiences.

I find it amusing at how the first mention of the girl having a boyfriend basically castrates every man in the room. (I thought it was just in the places I went, but after reading the posts in this thread...nope...that's totally how it goes down.)

Well, to be fair, I guess I would feel awkward if a girl started talking about her boyfriend in the middle of a game. But then, I'd feel the same if a guy started talking about his girlfriend. YES, SOME OF US ARE LONELY HERMITS WHO NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY! WE GET IT. SHADDUP BEFORE WE SHANK YOU.

So, fellow ladies, how often do you find this happening? Not being teased or trolled for being a female on the Internets, but being creeped and hit on, by completely straight-faced guys?
I'm kind of a flirt online, and I've had several guys not only hit on me, but (after frequent encounters) decide they love me and start stalking me.

I am not kidding.

It almost makes me reconsider flirting. Almost.
isn't the point of flirting to get Guys' attention?

Or am I wrong about that?

Girls keep hitting on me whenever I try to play online, it's become so bad that I seek out male-only TF2 servers.

... What?

Well... I'm half tempted to hit on every girl on this thread simply cuz of the topic. That's a lot effort though (and I'm also not really like that)

Some people are lonely is all.

I'm a flirt. I flirt with people. I don't do it to people who don't want it, and it's generally playful compliments. I'm very, very good at reading people, and it's been a very long time since I've flirted with the wrong person.

I'm oddly proud of this, actually...
Could I ask what flirting is, then? It seems like a really stupid question, but I have no idea.

Some answers that I've gotten are pretty ridiculous. 'IF HE TALKS TO ME ABOUT ANYTHING THAT ISN'T GAME RELATED THEN HE MUST BE FLIRTING WITH ME! UNLESS HE'S TALKING ABOUT GAME THINGS IN A FLIRTY WAY. THEN HE'S FLIRTING AGAIN!"

Asking how someone of the opposite gender is? Flirting. Inquiring about their health when you know they've been ill? Flirting. Asking what country they live in? STALKER PEDO CALL THE CYBER POLICE!

What I wasn't quite prepared for was how many guys seriously seek relationships through such meetings. I mean really, I've played MMORPGs before and never have I come across so many desperate guys in my life. One guy said if ever I find myself in southern Pennsylvania I should look him up, just before signing off. And so many others have ended up moaning and groaning when I mention the TF2 hat my boyfriend gave me for my birthday (and the physical version he bought and packaged like a gift in the game).
I felt pretty ill just reading this. This is why I instantly mute everyone at the earliest opportunity when playing online games, because 90% of people that use microphones seem to be jackasses.

By the way, you sound pretty cute, do you wanna maybe grab a drink or something later?

It is not solely the job of the marginalized group to make a change. I'm sorry the girl you talk to has issues with internalized misogyny, but passing the buck onto those who are being wronged is victim blaming. I'm going to do my part, as are many of my friends. I'm asking for others to lend a hand.
I understand this, and i am not blaming solely the marginalized group, i am saying for change to occur every one must change. Not just the subjugated, and not just the subjugators. I am saying it is sad that female gamers see others through jaded eyes. I am not one to sit by when i see a girl getting harassed, but i am still 'one'.

We must see every one as gamers, regardless of sex or creed. As a male gamer i face the stereotypes that every gamer faces, and a part of that stereotype is misogynist. In order to make a net were gamers are strictly gamers we must rewrite our own stereotype. We can not let us be portrayed as misogynist (look at the Spike video game awards when they had the winners written on the chests of topless women), we are portrayed this way, we begin to act this way. It becomes the norm. We all have to shift and stand against what the media portrays us as.

Hell. Sometimes i am embarrassed to call myself a gamer, or admit that i am on forums, or admit that i read comics, because people assume that we are al mouth breathers. That we are all some sort of fungal growth mooching off our parents, getting cheetos dust on our key boards, and socially inept. Sometimes it feels its true, because people write us off as such. Then online you run into sexist and racist comments. Because it is those that are willing to say those things, or willing to troll, that are most vocal. No good deed goes unpunished.
