While I can understand Lady Gaga not wanting it made, it's a bit of a "dick move" to actually ask the song to be recorded first, I'd have thought just the lyrics should have been enough for her to know if she is okay with it or not.

Mods are going to start getting annoyed if all your posts are just pointless images.
A picture is worth a 1000 words. Then again if that picture has text on it you take it at face value.

Except this is a forum not an image board, as a mod will surely tell you.

If you wish to post images then by all means do so, but I am just letting you know the mods won't like it if they see it.

Funny how Madonna never blocked Gaga from releasing the same song....

OT:

She has every right to block it. She wrote the melodies and they belong to her, if she doesn't want people making a buck off her stuff that's her right.

I'm amazed he's taking it so well. He's seems, at worst, frustrated, which is a pretty underwhelming reaction to all the trouble she put him through. And he still doesn't even go ahead with it; just puts it on Youtube.

What a cool guy. I'd be flipping out.
She didn't put him through trouble. He went through trouble on his own. And there's nothing actually stopping him from releasing it other than his own personal convictions. He should've been more prudent if he was going to be so sensitive to the whims of a busy 20-year old popstar. He should've said he needed a yes or no from the lyrics, or recorded a demo.
That's the problem, though. Most people tend not to refuse his parodies, so he had no reason to suspect she would. She made him record the song before giving him an answer, then didn't allow him to release it. So that put him through trouble. She could have given him an answer earlier, but decided not to. Not really his fault. You can't blame him for being polite.

He had plenty of reason to suspect she would when she started requesting to see what it would be like before signing off. He even said that he usually doesn't even have lyrics before the song is signed onto an album.

And again, she isn't keeping him from releasing it. He's choosing not to, because he doesn't like releasing things without approval.

I'm not blaming anyone. But he should be blaming himself for being so picky and taking such a risk which is based entirely around his persnickety nature.

Honestly if you spend a career taking the piss out of other artists then you'll get dicked on occasionally.

Yeah, I know he's good natured about it and all but it's only harmless fun if you both agree.

Also releasing it anyway was pretty fucking petulant.
Yeah, I find myself agreeing with this. Surely he should've come to expect this sort of thing by now. It was a bit strange for Gaga to insist on actually hearing it, but it can hardly come as a shock for someone to say "no, you're not using my song".

I dunno, I'm not a Weird Al fan so maybe I "just don't get it" or something.

Yeah... I don't get that. Why would he release it on Youtube if he didn't put it on his album out of some moral code?

Seems hypocritical to me. Big hypocrites, the two of them.

They should do a duet (where they both parody 'Express Yourself')

He'll post the MP3s as well. He's done it in the past - for example, with You're Pitiful [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You%27re_Pitiful].

He's legally allowed to release them - parody is a long-standing fair use exception to copyright - he just chooses not to sell them unless he gets permission. Normally he doesn't even make them until he gets permission, but in the rare exceptions he's had no problem releasing them for free.

Poor Weird Al :/ Not cool, Lady Gaga. Not cool. If I were a musician I would be god damn honoured to have him do a parody of any hit song I had made :)
They say you've made it as a musician if Weird Al parodies a song of yours.

Same thing happened with Coolio and Amish Paradise (or whatever Weird Al called it). I think he went on to release it anyway, thus ending the lamest feud in rap history.
I believe the story with Coolio was that he got permission from the label, released it, but then Coolio wasn't happy about it. They later reconciled about it (I think), but since then Al's insisted on getting the green light from the artist themself.

Seems like a dick move on his behalf. Why does this musical moral code of his not apply to Youtube and MP3s?

Ha ha... what?

Al has been making music since 1976. In 35 years of parodies, two people have told him "no."

Coolio and Lady Gaga.

Why doesn't he just release it anyway? Lady Gaga couldn't do crap about it if he did.

Although I wonder if she knew the money would be donated to charity.

Grrr, read the article and thread. He did release it anyway, but for FREE. It's on youtube, and I think you can download it from his website or blog or something. Al doesn't feel right about making money off a parody if the person he's parody-ing isn't cool with it -but like he said, Gaga pretty much pushed him into making the song before rejecting it and it's even less cool for all that time and money to be wasted. Someone might as well enjoy the fruits of his labor.

And yes, Gaga was fully aware about the charity aspect.

I laughed a bit at Al's version. Much better than the original... seems she was either stupid, or trying to piss off Weird Al.

Regardless I've seen people get moderator warnings for only posing pics, so it is a good heads up...

From what I know there was a bit of a misunderstanding as Al though he had permission to do the parody. Turns out he didn't, but he and Coolio made up and it's all cool now.

OT: I don't know what Lady Gaga was thinking through all that. It's not like she didn't have ample time to figure out if she had a problem with the song, seeing as she got the idea behind it, the lyrics, and the music (considering it would probably be practically the same as the original) before making a decision. Plus, it's almost a symbol of status to have Weird Al parody one of your songs. He's never cruel towards the band (if he's parodying them specifically), so I don't know why Lady Gaga didn't like the song. Maybe she's just too full of herself. Hell if I know though.

There's plenty of reasons not to like Miss Germanotta, not the least of which is that she's not very good. I seriously doubt Simon Cowell would have let this hack through even the first interview. This latest "dick move" merely adds to the already large pile.
