Chinese and german, so much easier to pass my exams. I got the lowest in the class in my last german exams, 2/20. Or for the nerd in me, (it's also all around me) binary.

Japanese, then I could go to Japan and understand animes without having to read the subtitles.
And
Russian, then at least I can understand those Russians (at least I think they're Russian) who keep calling me on my cell phone (I really have no idea how they got my number).

I already speak French. You guys have no idea how much fun it is.

I also know a bit of Spanish, though I'd like to become fluent in it.

Mandarin and Cantonese (Chinese), since Mandarin covers about one 7th of the planet, and apparently the Chinese diaspora is all about Cantonese (not sure about that though). Hindi also has a tremendous amount of speakers, so that would be nice as well. Arabic, of course, Portuguese, Russian, German, MAYBE Japanese, another big maybe Italian, and then just for shits and giggles Ancient Greek and Latin (I loves me some history).

That pretty much covers it. With a decent grasp on those, one could hold a conversation with almost anyone on the planet. Multilingualism is something we should all strive for, says I.

French and Russian.

Because I would be Suave and Badass respectivley.

I could be chatting to a girl and say "It is like the French say: (something romantic and charming)"

I could, also, wander up to a guy who was giving my friend trouble and, despite my weakling apperance, terrify the shit out of him by asking him something threatening in Russian (acutally, it would be twice as funny if I asked him something like "Would you care to dance at the shops" in a threatening tone)

He'd be terrified because this generation has been conditioned to believe anything Slavic could kill you horribly in a second unless you FUCKING...SIT...UP...AND...LISTEN

Da, Nyet and Escoski is all I know of Russian, and placenames, though that hardly counts

I can speak passable Spanish

I'm disappointed at your guys' lack of imagination here. Given the choice to learn any language, you'd take Japanese? Really? There are far more useful languages. I truly do not understand what is so god damned fascinating about the Japanese. I am baffled.

I really wish I could speak the language of the computers and html. I'm fluent in English and know enough to finish important sentences in French so that should be enough to get me by IRL, but I'm lost when it comes to programming computers.

German, because you can pretty much yell anything in that language and sound pissed off, which is just really cool.

Ok, languages I can already speak: German, English
Languages I want to learn: Spanish
Languages I had in school but forgotten: French, Latin, Japanese
Languages I want to be able to speak, but I don't want to put in the effort to learn: Turkish, Japanese, Russian, Mandarin and Kantonese

Seriously, why would anyone learn german? It is very hard and does not involve any benefits.

Take verbs for example: In english there are about 50 irregular verbs, why in german there are about the same regular ones.
Or word-gender: In english there aren't really any. In german you have three, which are very important. They affect the other words in the sentence. I'm not talking about he/she/it, that is there in german too.

The boy eats his cake: Der Junge isst seinen Kuchen.
The girl eats her cake: Das Mädchen isst ihren Kuchen.
The mother eats her cake: Die Mutter isst ihren Kuchen.
The baby eats its cake: Das Baby isst seinen Kuchen.

As you can see, the german word for boy is masculine and describes something masculine.
The german word for mother is feminine and discribes something feminine.
The german word for baby is neutral and discribes something neutral (without gender. The same word is used to translate 'its' and 'his'.)
The germand word for girl however is neutral, but discribes something feminine.

The whole language makes hardly any sense at all.

tbh, commas are much more of a problem. you can, but you don't have to, but there are some cases you must... ah stupid. everything got so vague with the last reform of the reform of the reform... why couldn't we stick to the old stuff with some minor changes. They are even changing the official spelling of words like mayonnaise -> majonäse. stuuuupid.

Japanese and Latin. Latin because I love using it when writing, and Japanese because I love how it sounds.

Spanish. I live in Miami, and I wouldn't be able certain jobs without it. Although most of those are because it involves dealing with customers, which is something I wouldn't want to do, it still has many practical uses here.

It would be kind of useful to learn, since there are a fair few speakers, but really, it ought to be very low on anyone's list. It's this bizarre fascination everyone seems to have with everything Japan related, it really confuses me.
