That's funny.

How exactly are pirates being punished here?

Last time I checked, pirates hackers and code monkeys that crack games and software programs, so others can use.

The people who acquire these files afterwards are not "pirates" in any real sense.

So no. Pirates aren't getting what they deserve because they are happily playing their PC version of GTA V that they probably cracked on their console.

If this was done by RockStar as an anti-piracy campaign... bravo to them. I just hope that they remove all of the malware immediately or everyone'll hate them and then there won't be a PC port of GTA 5.

But, it probably isn't. So, whatever.

You deserve what's coming to your PC.
To be fair, if you pirate games in the first place, you deserve something like this.

But yeah, you'd think people would actually realize the port hasn't been announced. No way any leak would actually be legit.

No Sympathy for them.

Well, to be honest, if someone was stupid enough to download that, he's stupid enough to get his PC infected anyway, so nothing really changed...

Yes, because there aren't thousands of people who pirated it on the consoles, right? Seriously, console piracy is consistently glossed over, while console versions often get pirated faster than PC versions. Sure, PC piracy might be more widespread, but acting like it's a PC-only problem is silly...

to be fair, pirating a game to the console runs the risk of getting console banned.

While it might not be a big issue with pirates that want to play the latest single player game, online is a literal minefield.
You only risk getting your console banned if you are dumb enough not to take it offline. As for multiplayer, it's more lenient than on the PC. At least on the consoles pirates can TRY going online and running the risk if they want. On the PC, they don't even get that much. Add to that the fact that once you mod a console, pirating is easy as downloading/making a copy of the DVD, while on the PC you are stuck hoping that various dubious cracks work and don't fuck up your PC, I'd say there are definitely aspects of console piracy that are far more convenient than PC piracy.

Its fascinating to me that PC gamers can look at a situation like this, and think it hasn't taken GTA V on PC off the table. Like, millions of gamers instantly pirating GTA V doesn't show why the dev would be wasting their time porting to the console.

You know, you are allowed to make a distinction between what you want to happen, and what is likely to happen.

Woah, no way, downloading an imaginary product yielded bad results?

Piracy has been show to increase record sales by a German study. And even if we ignore the more likely trend that it does basically nothing to sales, look at the cost of a port of already finished content and compare it to PC sales statistics. Huzzah tons of people stole the Witcher 2, it still made bank. Tons of people stole dragon age, it still made bank. PC exclusive star citizen just hit 24 million and it isn't even released yet; thats pure pre-orders. If rockstar is dumb enough to take a port off the table, then they are welcome to do it. People with an interest in making profits will take their place in the gaming industry.

If you know enough about computers to pirate a game then you should also know about the harmful kinds of software.
THIS! A million times this.

If you know how to use Daemon Tools, there's a pretty damn good change you know about malware.
You reeeeally don't have to know much about computers. A quick google search will find you all the information you need to pirate a game. Then those people will just go and download everything they can get their hands on...

Actually, pirates are renegade sailors who raid and steal ships.

On topic, I fail to see how identity theft of a 14 year old kid with acne and $35 in his bank account is profitable for these people. People who can't afford a game and who have to resort to copying it aren't exactly the best target for fraud.

So because idiots released a fake on Torrent trackers, Rockstar should hold off on porting the game for PC?

Whoa, elitist much?

Not being one of those idiots and having used trackers in the past, I know a thing or two about this phenomenon. It's not because a given company announces that they might port a game to PC that the handy-dandy scene groups automatically get some material to work with. Yet, you see this all the time. Company X says they might port their popular title? ZING! On the very next day, you see your average pirate haunts get flooded with "WORKING.REAL.LEGIT.CRACKZ".

Yes, the trackers can be fraught with idiots who don't know the first thing about retail game releases or who assume that scene groups have some sort of supernatural access to games that haven't left the status of Alpha preview builds, much less the design document stage.

Barring all that, using the existence of piracy to snob porting a successful game smacks of hypocrisy. Yes, there's sales shortfalls to consider, but that alone doesn't justify a console exclusive remaining exclusive if there's even the slightest possibility of a profit being made.

It's proof positive they should sell the game on PC.
If so many people are falling for the blatantly obvious ploy here, there's easily more who want the game that haven't.

So they're going to get back at a third party by pirating the game.

Also, we all know it won't be out-pirating The Witcher 2, which was pirated 67 trillion times according to inflated figures pulled from rears.
The formula for that is....

(Total number of connections x hrs the torrent has been up)/(1hr per Gb of game) = NUMBER OF PIRATE(yarr!) COPIES!!!fuckinggoddamnedeleventyone!

It's not just arse pulling it's MATHEMATICAL ARSE PULLING!

It's a good thing I really only wanna play GTA on console. Call me biased, but my first GTA experience was III on a Playstation 2, and it just kinda suckered me in to GTA on console only.

So... whelp, I'm good.
