Ladies and gentlemen of the escapist, I am sure that you are all no stranger to the internet opinion that all Pokemon after the first 251 are badly-designed, forgettable, and ruin the entire series of games (that nevertheless continues to sell staggering amounts in each installment, not including the huge, huge, huge dent it has forever left in popular culture, and will continue to do so-- go ahead and name one person under 40 who can't tell you who Pikachu is.)

And there's a little bit of merit to these sentiments. There are certainly some silly, dumb, out-of-place, and plain old forgetful Pokemon designs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations.

But, and I say this with full confidence without a flame shield, so did Generation 1 and 2. There were some dumb designs in the first two Generations, and you just didn't notice because of nostalgia.

Go ahead and tell me about how awesome Octillery, or maybe Venomoth, were. How about, say, Jumpluff? Qwilfish and Parasect? Jynx? Mr. Mime?

So go ahead, everyone. Lay it down. It's time for us Pokemon fans to drop the nostalgia, hipster, and "my generations were better than yours," acts. No one's going to criticize you or crucify you. What are some of the stupidest, least popular, and least favorite Pokemon of the first two generations?

Personally?

Tangela.

Tangela sucks.

The games have gotten better in my opinion with more strategy involved. After all the first two gens were fun, but were nothing more than my type beats your type bullshit.
This, definitely. Though it really doesn't matter too much to the actual art designs of the Pokemon, the type-splits in Generation 4 (I think? Or was it 3?) made the game a lot more balanced. Pokemon that were utterly useless became viable, and Pokemon that had long dominated the scene as unstoppable were brought down a bit.

Unown. Sure they got an interest look due to them repersent each of the alphabet but that it. They only got the attack Hidden Power and the stats are no where near useful for anyone using one as his/ her party unless that person is playing hard mode on him/ herself.

This is a really popular one and I've never really understood why. He looks so silly. Cute, yes, but like you put it, he's one dopey-looking ************.

Yes it's about the alphabet, sure. Who the hell wants to use that though, its entirely out of place within the series. If you included all of the pokemon, i would have also an honorary mention to Rotom.[/quote]

I honestly liked a lot of the ones that TC named... (though I admit I prefer Venonat to Venomoth, but I love Octillery, Mr.Mime and Parasect) but to each their own. I think every Gen has its share of good and bad designs.

I would say my bottom 3 from Gen 1 are

1. Machoke
2. Gengar
3. Goldeen

My bottom 3 of Gen 2 are

1. Unown
2. Igglybuff
3. Quagsire

I know by saying this people are gonna call BS on me, but I really do look at each Pokemon design carefully and not let myself get blinded by nostalgia, and even with that mentality, I do find a higher ratio of designs I like vs. designs I don't in the earlier gens.

But to be fair, some of my favorite Pokemon designs of all time are from the 3rd onward gens (Froslass, Scrafty, Volcarona, Sableye, Tropius, Honchkrow, I could go on)

But since this topic is about our least favorite Pokemon designs, I can not let this little F-er go unmentioned.

In my opinion, the WORST Pokemon design ever. It's just...ugly. There's so little appealing about it. It gets a bit better when it evolves (especially in its last stage) but this one is just dumb to the 9th degree.

I'm not going to argue with your opinion on Tympole, but...

...how could you ever say this is an improvement?

Well, the Captain Obvious in me wants to say Jynx.

The Not-So-Captain Obvious? Golbat.

I have no problem with how Zubat looks. I have no problem with how Crobat looks. But Golbat just looks... wrong to me. And his sprite in the first gen didn't do him any favors:

Well, it's not the worst Pokemon design ('cause that's Tympole) so if you're not the worst, ya gotta be an improvement on that, right?

Also I've played Pokepark 2. He looks a bit better in 3D. Some Pokemon pull that off nicely.

Don't worry, they retconned that in generation generation 3:

... what is that? Christ... and I thought the designs in Platinum were starting to decline. I'm kinda glad I decided to avoid Black&White now. I mean, I don't care about the competitive side of Pokemon and they hardly ever change the single-player, so I guess the series just doesn't have any appeal for me anymore.

OT:

Miltank has all of my hatred, because of how stupid Whitney's is.

Most of the sprites from Generation I were pretty terrible too.

EDIT: On reflection, Girafarig isn't really all that bad.
