Gordon Freeman, yea....I went there. One of the most uncompelling and dull characters I have ever had the misfortune of playing. He's not cool, he's not a good protagonist, and just a floating camera that shoots a wields a crowbar. No more interesting than the majority of FPS heroes.

Richard Mayhew. I hated him until the last quarter of the book. One million respect points for whoever knows which book.
Also, this thread was never stated to be restricted to videogames.

Joseph Turok. JOSEPH. MOTHER FUCKING. TUROK.

He is nothing but an Indian with a Mohawk.
He could easily be replaced with... Say, a Labrador retriever?

Freeman. He is the biggest non-character ever. Everyone acts like he is the greatest character ever, because he is a nerdy non-character that they can project themselves onto. You never receive any in game evidence that he is anything more than a floating hand.

Human Arthas from WC3 annoyed the hell outta me, same deal with Human Duran for StarCraft.

But for least favorite, probably Marcus from Gears of War. He wears that damned do-rag all the time, has a Clint Hurdle-esque soul patch, and his neck is wider than his head. The only likable thing is the armor, which, let's be honest, is just an amalgam of various other armor suits, changed enough to avoid copyright.

I pretty generally hate all protagonists, they're annoying, moralistic little nobs so self righteous it's like they went around collecting all of the self-righteousness from every religion on earth before combining it into a super self righteousness .... and eating it. My main problem is that they usually live, no matter how many times you faceplant off a 1000 story tower.

I wanted to smack Vaan with a 2x4... repeatedly. Mercer didn't bug me, I found him comical in fact. But Vaan... My God. If someone spoiled the ending of FFXII for me and it turned out that Vaan fell into a volcano (Or was, say, pushed...) then I would happily return to playing that game.

Maybe.

For Christsakes, this.

"Nuh-uh!" say the fanboys, "He is tha best hero evar because he's a projection of the player! In essence, he is you!"

Let me tell you something about you (I'm talking to fanboys, not you personally, Souplex). You're in pathetic physical condition, nerdy, socially crippled, and about as tough as a potato crisp. A great hero, you are not.

Who would I rather look to for heroism? A space marine in fantastic green armor with tons of experience in battle and snark to boot, or you, a stereotypical nerd with no leadership skills, no experience, and a crowbar? Yeah. I'm totally following the latter. For sure. Definitely.
