[sub] wonder if i get spammed to death now :p [/sub]
Most likely, I'll start the ball rolling for you. ;)

Don't you mean Morgan Freeman? Lolwtfroflcopternubpwnzors >:OO

Oh yeah, I suckROCK (Not polite to change people's text ;D)
gordon freeman vs morgan freeman eh?
Morgan Freeman would win by the power of his voice calling in the arch angels to smite his enemies.

(Yes that weed is settling quite nicely, thanks for asking :D)
There's a This American Life segment about a guy who ran a focus group to create the ideal religion, and when asked what god looks and acts like, a large percentage of people said "Morgan Freeman".

I just find it ironic that everyone complains about the stereotypical angsty JRPG character, then when they finally get the opposite of their complaints they hate him. Come on people, show some consistency.

And for your information, FFX happens to be one of the more popular Final Fantasy games, at least in America. And it wasn't until I played it just a few months ago that I realized why.

Final Fantasy X tells a much more personal story than most of the other games in the series. It achieves the epicness expected from Final Fantasy, but it is not the focus: rather, the story is all about the characters, their interactions with each other, their feelings toward each other as affected by their loyalties and their past. It was all about that, a summoner and her guardians. This made the game quite different from most I've played, and made for an incredibly emotional story with deep characters and dynamic relationships.

Also, the battle system is my personal favorite of the FF games I've played (I like the true turn-based rather than the time-based system, and they did a great job of assigning each character a specific role in battle). The soundtrack was not FFVII or FFVI status, but was really good (To Zanarkand is the most beautiful piano song ever). The optional sidequests at the end were actually fun, and there was plenty to do.

You may not like it, however that can happen, but you have to at least recognize that it's your opinion. There are many acceptable answers besides your snide example.
Popularity does not = good. By that logic Twilight is a masterful piece of cinema, The Jonas Brothers are one of the best bands ever, and Dr. Phil should run for President. Yeah, FFX sold well but that doesn't make it universally 'good' - and certainly not in terms of its story.

And yeah, it's just an opinion and we're all entitled to our own. But I don't think that's any reason to halt all discussion about our opinions. Discussing why we feel the way that we do is half of the fun of any discussion. I'd hate to live in a world full of conversations that went like:

"I think it's good."
"I think it's bad."
"We disagree."
"Let's never discuss it again."
"Agreed, we will only ever talk about things we agree on."

Anyway...

The things you describe liking best about FFX are the things it does exactly the same as every FF release before, and I'd say FFX does them the worst. The focus in FF story telling has always been on the characters and their interaction, rather than on the 'big picture' to go and save the world. At the end of FF6 each character recounts their own personal reasons behind being there at the final battle, and the game's story is all about the relationships that form in the face of the crisis more than about the crisis itself. You know that Locke loves Celes, but the game never seriously shows their relationship. You get behind the character's motivations through their actions and the subtext in the dialogue.

In FFX its in your face. Nothing is written in subtext and nothing is between the lines. All the characters blatantly tell you exactly what they feel and exactly what their motivations are. I think this was partly because Square was playing with their new voiceover toy and over-wrote the whole thing. Most of the characters in the game are representatives of a one phrase stereotype, and if you know your Japanese stock characters its absolutely insulting. There's the 'Magical Girl', the 'Old Samurai', the 'Cheery Youngster', etc. Almost half of the dialogue can be drawn from these descriptions, and reading them you basically get everything the game has to tell you about the characters.

Honestly I never considered someone saying they 'prefer' FFX's battle system, as its exactly the same as every other turn-based JRPG created. I guess this would make sense if you played FFXII first and then went back and decided you liked the old-school way better.

Anyway one day I'll go back and replay the whole banal adventure and describe in detail why it sucks and you suck for liking it (Spoony reference, don't go taking that seriously I'm sure you're just a wonderful person with terrible taste :p)

In any case I feel this is still on topic as Tidus is the clear 'favorite' in this little questionnaire.

Oh also, as I've said many times before - Cloud from FFVII is not a whiny emo bastard. Cloud from Advent Children, however, is. Fuck Cloud from Advent Children, he ruined Cloud for me.

Ahhh yes, how could I forget about this guy? He was freaking annoying on so many levels and frankly I hate him already in the real world, let alone the gaming world.
Actually with this, I think we may have a /thread.

Great post, actually. That's all I wanted to hear :)

For the record I liked all the things you liked about the game too, but my overall opinion was tainted by my personal involvement in the story. Auron, Kimahri, and Lulu were very good characters - but the story wasn't about them. It was about Tidus falling in love with Yuna and saving the world from Seymour Guado with his friend Wakka. I feel dirty just typing 'Wakka'.

But yeah the game was beautiful, the summoning was awesome, and I enjoyed the sphere grid thing too. But that was the point that I, and many other FF fans, realized that the story was no longer the best part about the series. It was no longer about interesting character development and complex relationships with villains who had interesting motivations. It was about pretty colors and mini-games.
A secret? FFX was the first FF I played xD

I think that's the case for a lot of people who didn't hate it, hehe.

You ever get around to playing FFX-2? That's a game I'm sure we can agree was awful.

In terms of Kratos, i have to point out the fact that his entire fucking city, again HIS FUCKING CITY!, was laid to waste BY HIM in a blind rage because of a douche of a bored god. (which is ironically enough something that I too would do if given the chance.) On top of this, his goddess fucking cursed him for it despite the fact that she knew it was Ares that made him do it in the first place. If you wouldn't be crushed, pissed to fuck and utterly scarred forever in multiple ways because of this then you can go back to the production line because your maintenance is complete and that means breaks over you fucking android.

As for Gordan Freeman, I'm appreciative of the epic alien killing guy holding the big gun to be for once a man with a functional mind in his head and no stupid obnoxious overconfident disembodied voice that seems to plague enough games to form a country. I would much rather follow the guy who knows what he's fucking doing and can think more than two steps ahead of the enemy over the guy who puts on the most overcompensating suit of "bulletproof" armor, picks up the biggest gun he can find and talks like he's so much better than you when he lets his guard down enough to make any competent soldier want to commit suicide. Why? Because the intelligent ones should be the leaders and the big idiots should be distraction and the meat-shield. it's like choosing between godzilla and the four horsemen.

As for Final Fantasy, the entire series got rather old rather quickly. I don't see why everyone is running around with swords when fucking automatic weapons that can punch holes through tanks are easily available. I don't get the mako business at all and i have this to say to whoever thought it up: Make up your fucking mind. It's either magic or technology. Magitech never left the ground for a reason. I don't like how the most epic of all the characters has never had a decent haircut in his life and wields a sword about as long as the road is wide and then some and I very much dislike how he's the main antagonist in all of it because he got pissed and decided to fuck up the guys who needed fucking up. (I'm only addressing Final Fantasy 7 because I haven't played most of the others and I stayed away from the series almost entirely afterward playing Dirge Of Cerberus after realizing that none of the others were like it at all. That and the fact that everyone seems retarded enough to leave fully automatic weapons complete with ammo lying around where stupid angsty fucks are walking all over them. After hearing about Tidus, I'm glad for my abstinence though I love his sword.)

As for all other games that aren't Silent Hill 2, they will never compare.

As for the answer to the question at hand, i have to say my most hated protagonist is a trio.
Cloud
Sora (because the two of them are fighting the wrong people for the wrong reasons.)
Mario (because he's fat, stupid, gay and annoying.)

In your opinion, anyway.

At least in AC, Tifa gives him a tongue-lashing severe enough to make him man the f##k up.

Master Chief. One of the most overrated beings that was ever created.
I don't know... it's not like Master Chief really has a personality to dislike in the first place.

Of course, if being boring counts that heavily, I'd say my least favorite protagonist is the Pong paddle.

Not to sound like a broken record, but Earth 2160: ALL OF THEM. When I'd finished the ED campaign, the main "character" gets taken away by some shady superior to be executed. I just couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for him.

I'm serious! I went through and played FF7 again recently and he's more of an arrogant, unfeeling asshole than a whiny emo git. He doesn't cry, he doesn't brood, the difference is like night and day!

Also, I can't believe no one has mentioned EVERY CHARACTER from Haze. Although, I guess that's mostly because nobody played Haze.

You know, I tried? But I got circa the first fight and discovered that I thought the game was a steaming pile of slag. I mean, wow.

Which reminds me of a new character I loathe:

FFX-2 Yuna. She was awesome in FFX... anything that can summon a giant flaming dog from hell that throws chunks of the earth at enemies is way cool. But X-2? No. No, no, no, no, no.

Wow, so much hate for FF. The bandwagon is strong in this thread...

Also, I'm a bit curious as to why so much hate for Gordon Freeman. Ok, fair enough he isn't the great hero everyone claims he is (and I don't think he should have one that Gamespot hero poll) but how is he a 'bad person' I mean, he never shouts/swears at people, he's never mean to people and all he tries to do is save peoples lives. Yet so much hate for the Free-man!

Perhaps when this thread is resurrected/created anew in a few months time will we expect to see FF13 top the list? ^^

In the Star Wars Lego games, which I otherwise adore, you have to play Jar Jar Binks at various points. You can't just leave him behind somewhere and try to win without him; you have to bring him along. He stays mostly silent, but...Jar Jar Binks [http://www.usnews.com/usnews/opinion/articles/990712/archive_001413.htm]. Pesky dankish weather-bitten burly-boned artless droning half-brained Jar Jar "meesa you humble servant" Binks! The mere thought of him reduces me to a giant squid of anger [http://nerdfighters.ning.com/video/the-giant-squids-of-anger]. Blaalulaalrflaarghagh! Anyone played The Witcher?

Also, i'm noticing a trend for FPS characters to be shallow, meaningless shells. Gordon Freeman, Master Chief, whatever you are in FEAR, etc.

This might be a bit contraversial, but... anyone find that when you met JC Denton in Deus Ex 2 it completely ruined any 'coolness' you envisaged for your character in the first one?

All the male characters from Final Fantasy that looked a little too much like a girl....so yea mostly all of them.
