Theres this game called Minecraft, I doubt anyone has ever heard of it. I swear it should get featured stories endlessly on websites so that the developer (who I hear is very very poor) can make a few bucks to eat this week.

Does this qualify as lesser known but awesome? I think so.
Yes. Yes, that game is all kinds of awesome. I like taking over a guy, sneaking into a group of enemies, then going peanut butter-banana sandwich crazy while they freak out.

Oh, and the only good star wars game next to Battlefront 1 and 2:
Star wars: Republic Commando.

This. was. THE. game. actually made star wars feel like there was a war goin on. So amazing. Such love for it, but I lost my copy in some way and haven't seen another since. I miss it so. Screw KotoR

Two games that have their flaws (and are thus worse than other titles) but have unique strengths which makes them in my opinion awesome enough that they should be known more :

Xenogears - very good PSX JRPG with a unique battle-system and an awesome storyline. That is if you like storylines that need a flow chart to understand them (I certainly do!). Also note the excellent music.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer - Ditch the main-game: The first add-on is the real deal. If you can bite through an evening of learning the AD&D 3.5 Edition rules and create a suitable character you are awarded with the most epic and enticing storyline I have seen in quite a while.

R.U.S.E

does anyone else actually play this game?
I love it, its like how World in Conflict should have been if it actually ever arrived to the Xbox 360 (which is a source of severe rage and has been for several years now) except its set in WWII (yes, that dead horse with very few teeth left) I like how the controls are simple, the nice touch that if you zoom really far out you can see the map as a table in Allied HQ, how you can't lose your units as their models dont get smaller as you zoom out. I like how a strong unit can still go toe to toe with several lesser units and win (I'm looking at you Red Alert 3 with your Molotov equipped Conscript x 50 charge which works very effectively against anything)

The game actually feels like a battle rather than a game that someone has just stuck the "Its WWII go nuts" label on

Kingdom Under Fire (1 and 2) were both excellent games on the original xbox, providing great gameplay and even scoring highly in reviews, though hardly anyone seems to really know about them.

I've said their names before but I'll say them again: Freelancer and Streets of Simcity are both amazing games and (in my experience) are unknown to most players.

[sub][sub]Silly OP, Golden Sun isn't lesser known![/sub][/sub]

Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Actually the whole Panzer Dragoon series is awesome, but at least Saga doesn't kind of shoot itself by being a rail shooter.

Take, for example, Golden Sun, a pair of RPGs for the GBA that I am hard pressed to find anyone who knows anything about.
Golden Sun is incredible - there's a few people here who've played it. Didn't think 2 was as strong as 1, but both rocked.

Have you ever played Shining Force? Only link between that and Golden Sun is that someone once told me the team who made it was very similar because it's more Fire Emblem than Final Fantasy, but I'd recommend it heartily. It's quite expensive to buy if you don't have a copy though, so it'd be an emulator job.

X3: Terran Conflict. It is an awesome space combat simulator/space 4x game. It has a huge learning curve but one of the most active and expansive modding communities I have ever seen for a game. The vanilla game is good enough, but add on tons and tons of mods and you have a near infinitely re-playable game.

It is on Steam, check it out.

One of the few Xbox originals that I still own is Close Combat: First to Fight, and it's still just an awesome game all around. One of my favorite military shooters ever.
Ah, yes, the game that buried my once-beloved Close Combat series once and for all... speak not of the devil!

OT: Echo Nigh: Beyond is the best survival horror game out there, bar none. I have yet to meet someone who's played it.

Freelancer SHOULD remain unknown! Never have I been more hyped about a game for years, based solely on how awesome its predecessor was, only to be utterly crushed once I actually started playing the thing and saw that it raped the corpse of Starlancer in a way that would make Irreversible look like a Disney flick.

I agree that Republic Commando is pretty damn sweet, but the only good SW games? I think not! What about TIE Fighter? X-Wing? Dark Forces? KotOR? Hell, even Force Unleashed was pretty good.
