Why not Fallout 1 or 2?
Again, I don?t have much to say on the matter of these, except that they are really, really good games. Buy them if you haven?t already, preferably on GoG and not Steam.
Well, GoG is DRM-free, cheaper (6$ as opposed to 10$, if I remember correctly), comes with the games soundtrack, some wallpapers/avatars (which you could probably get for free anyway), the Fallout Bible (A collection of Fallout lore. Again, available for free) and probably most importantly, compatible with operating systems up to Windows 7.
You buy it off Steam, you have to use mods and fixes to get it to work on modern computers, and Steam tends to interfere with those. Not to mention with Fallout 2, you want to get the restoration and bugfix megamod, cause that game unpatched is buggier than New Vegas and 3 combined.
I found it once, but only because it flew past my face and hit a rock. Ammo was pretty scarce though and I really couldn't be bothered to look for it, so I kept it as a trinket. I've also had it trigger a few times as well but I could never find it, much to my annoyance. XD
Anyways, keep up the good work and I'll keep lurking here and not posting, like I've been doing ever since you started this. XD
For me the Firelance triggered in the middle of a firefight so I didn't notice the explosion and didn't even realize it was a random event until I looked it up. I assumed it had just been lying in that spot and spent several minutes looking around trying to find some environmental storytelling that wasn't there.
I've actually had the firelance event happen to me on three separate occasions, all of which I was unable to actually get the weapon because I had the misfortune of the event happening in rocky areas at night so my options were to either wait til morning and search for half an hour or just say "Fuck it" and move on.
I generally just moved on since seeing as how the weapon has a finite amount of ammunition and I'm the kind of person who would never actually use it because I'd keep thinking "But I might need it later" and would hate to waste it.
[HEADING=1]Chapter XIX - Dad Gives Us Chores[/HEADING]
Last update we took a hike across the entire wasteland to escort Dad back to Rivet City. We did not get much out of it, aside from the Firelance alien blaster.
At least the story is picking up... Right?
So James goes to talk with Doctor Li about getting Project Purity back up. I doubt that she'll listen, but let's see what happens.
Oh look, INT bobblehead. It's completely moot though, since we already had 10 INT. I still don't regret anything. Bobbleheads kind of brake the game, but no more than the perks that give you 9 in every SPECIAL stat.
Wait, didn't James have pretty much the same type of conversation with Doctor Li before he ran off to Vault 112? We weren't there, but Li's dialogue suggests that.
Do note, that Doctor Li's team is working on growing crops. They could probably use that GECK (which really just functions like a battery for the purifier) in that pursuit. I mean, there isn't any farms or vegetation throughout the entire Capital Wasteland. (Except for Oasis but that's another story for another day.)
Somehow James manages to convince her though.
Wait, you have a computer there that tells you where the GECK is? That's convinient.
"You have to go now? Can't this wait?"
"After twenty long years, I finally have a chance to make things right, to finish what I started so long ago. I owe this to Madison. I owe it to your mother. No, I can't wait another moment. Are you coming with us?"
This isn't really a choice, because you need to help Dad to further the plot, but that would be cool if you could decline to help Dad. It honestly wouldn't change things much at all.
"All right. Let's get going."
"That's my girl! It'll be good to work side-by-side with you, honey."
Side-by-side? Pfft, I have the higher intelligence stat here. You're going to listen to me. (His INT is 8 in the GECK (Not the story GECK, the editor program for the game.))
So now we go back to Project Purity. Again. How many times have we visited/walked past that place again?
I wasn't exaggerating about how the entire DC area is perpetually overcast.
After going all the way around just to reach the door, we find the scientists waiting for us outside.
Says Mr. "I Beat a Talon Merc to Death With a Baseball Bat".
"I hate to ask you to put yourself in harm's way, but you seem to have learned to handle yourself."
So you've completely forgotten about saying you wanted us to stay in the Vault specifically so that we could stay out of harms way, now you want me to clear out the place for you? We already cleared ou the upper floor, but there's still super mutants in the lower level.
"I need you to go in and make sure it's safe for Doctor Li and here crew."
"Sure thing, I'll be right back."
They give you 6 different dialogue options here, saying slight variations on yes or no. Bethesda, why did you put the plethora of dialogue choices in the insignificant conversations.
"Be careful."
So, we have to clear out the basement of Project Purity so that the scientists can work in peace.
This is the basement underneath Project Purity. Super Mutants are still pretty heavily entrenched down here.
I can't really complain about this ruining the pacing of the main plot, because we could have done this earlier but to be fair, there was no reason for you to come down here until now.
These guys with the sledgehammers are pitifully easy to dodge.
I hate fighting super mutants now. They're just a waste of ammo at this point.
The fact that I can still target an enemy 4 times with the metal blaster even with a rather average agility stat, just highlights how broken the goddamn thing is.
There is a grill down here for some random reason.
There is a ton of backtracking for this small area, it's really annoying. We have to use that fusebox but not after returning here two more times.
Alright, now we finish up the necessary combat portion of the question. Time for the unecessary fetch quest portion.
We wander into a side room with some more of the project purity holotapes. Posting the link again, just for the hell of it. [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Project_Purity_journals]
Now we walk all the way back out.
At the very least they could be programmed to come into the building after you clear it out.
"Everything in there is dead."
"I'm proud of you. Now let's get in there."
He won't shut up about how proud he is of you. Note that you can never call him out on abandoning you ever again after finding him in Vault 112.
So all of the scientists walk into the building. They move so slowly though, so I fast-forwarded about an hour in order to keep things moving.
Just casually ignore the decapitated super mutant corpse.
"Revelation 21:6. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, I will give unto him that is athrist of the fountain of the water of life, freely. Don't you see? This is what it all means. The water, the purifier. THIS is the water of life. Your mother's dream."
You aren't using symbolism well if you have to outright explain it.
"No point in wasting time. Let's get to work. There's much to be done."
"What do we need to do right now?"
"The Project was abandoned shortly after you were born. Things have deteriorated here since then, and there's been some flooding. I'll need you to get to the Flood Control Pumps and activate them so we can clear out the water and reach the mainframe."
"Why me? Can't someone else do it?"
"In a word? No. Everyone else has specific tasks to complete as the power comes back online. Don't worry, I'll guide you along the way as best I can using the intercom system. You'll do fine."
This is such a waste of our talents. We know more than just pressing buttons and shooting things... Right? That joke was so unintentionally meta.
"Okay. Where do I need to go?"
"The automatic doors sealed when the flooding occurred, so you'll have to use the access tunnels to reach the pumps."
Now we have to go back down underground to press a single button. Yep. And there's multiple intercoms throughout the area in case you somehow get lost.
So now we push a single button and then go upstairs for some fuses.
"Is it true? Did you really disarm the bomb in Megaton?"
"Yes, I disarmed the bomb."
"I'm very proud of you, even though you put yourself in harm's way. Just be careful out there. This is a dangerous world; far more dangerous than anyone in that Vault knows."
If you have bad karma and blew up Megaton, he brings up you blowing up Megaton. The tone of his voice does not indicate horror, it just sounds like he is somewhat disappointed in you for wiping out a whole city.
"You said something about fuses?"
"Right. The flooding shorted out some of the fuse boxes downstairs, including one that controls some of the automatic doors. Here, take these fuses. The box is back down in the sub-basement, near the eastern end of the level. One the fuses are replaced, you'll be able to get to the mainframe."
This is the last conversation we ever have with Dad, before he makes his obligatory, pointless sacrifice.
Remember this room?
Thankfully we don't have to backtrack all the way upstairs.
We just flick on the switch of this ominous glowing computer.
Now we have to go upstairs and fix a block in the intake pipe. At least we don't have to talk with him again.
We enter this completely random grating in upper floors of the memorial. One has to wonder how the entrance is inside the building, considering the pipes were created by the people making Project Purity. In fact, how did they build the huge fucking complex of pipes and steel?
It's best not ask these questions though.
What's the purpose of the lightbulbs in the pipe.
For some reason there's a speaker and a gaping hole in the side of the pipe too. Isn't water supposed to go through here?
After you activate the wheel, you're locked in the pipe. Uh, oh, we're going to drown!!!
Is that a vertibird!? I thought the Enclave only had those-
What the fuck is going on? What is the Enclave doing here???
Fallout 3 question: Did the section where you have to repair stuff in the basement annoy you guys too? Or am I just overreacting?
At that point, we're taking a huge break from the main plotline to do Operation Anchorage and a few sidequests. I want to stave off Little Lamplight for as long as I can.
True, I have to play Operation Anchorage, but Lamplight is so much worse.
Edit: At least with Anchorage if I can squint my eyes I can pretend like I'm playing Call of Duty 4 or something.

Not at all. It's where the setting's credibility goes flying out the window, along with all of my patience. Yet for the sake of this LP, I'm not going to use the Child At Heart perk to outright skip it.
Ironically enough, my first playthrough through the game I wiped out Paradise Falls and freed the kids before I visited Lamplight, so they just let me right on through and I didn't see why everyone hated it so much aside from the complete implausibility of it. On repeat playthroughs I began to loathe it though.
And yeah, the name makes sense given the whole plot of the game and with the water purifier.

Well, I'll get more into Lamplight when the time comes but basically it's a huge jarring tonal shift, the game completely railroads you through it, the existence of a city filled with children brings up a ton of questions and the kids are just assholes to you.

Was I annoyed by the chores? A bit. At this point, I was glad that the plot was moving forward at all though. I think there may be some intention in these chores being annoying though. You do a bunch of stupid tasks and then think, "Oh, God! Not another one!"
Then you see a freaking Vertibird. I think the quest makes that moment much more surprising. Of course, this is lost on you once you've already played it. But I like the contrast of a boring moment transforming into a critical one.
Alternatively titled - Remind me to put points into energy weapons.
[HEADING=1]Chapter XX - The Shit Hits the Fan[/HEADING]
So last update, we were basically doing chores for dad to get the purifier up and running. Exciting Fallout action, huh? Right before we got the purifier running, the Enclave arrived to seize Project Purity.
How are the Enclave still around? Why are they here? Will we ever find our way off this game's plot and get to the actual good parts? Let's find out.
We continue through the tunnel, we can't go back the way we came.
You drop down on little ledges to break your fall. This again begs the question: Why have this in a pipe?
There is an enclave soldier right outside the exit of the pipe. Uh oh, this is going to be a tough fight...
Right?
Their armor looks pretty cool in this game. I still prefer the New Vegas Enclave Armor design, with the huge fan on the back of the armor.
Remember when power armor was resistant to pretty much every type of weapon in the game?
These guys go down really easily, arguably faster than the super mutants do and they have much better equipment than the mutants.
Time to be a big damn hero and save dad and everyone else inside the purifier!
Oh, blocked out by doing anything because of a see through door. That's always fun.
What authority does the Enclave have left anyway? I mean later, they appear throughout the wasteland in a huge force, and you have to wonder how quickly they recovered from getting nearly wiped out in Fallout 2.
Awesome, open the door dad, let me shoot this bastard in the back of the head.
He isn't lying here. Apparently the purifier will only work with a magical GECK, the purpose of which is completely unrelated to a purifier.
Wow, what an asshole. Just open the door dad, let me take care of this guy. I can take all three out in one round with my metal blaster.
Awesome, give an ironic quip before opening the door up shot I can shoot them all.
Wait, what are you doing?
Wait, what???
WHY DID YOU BLOW IT UP? YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BLOW IT UP, I COULD HAVE JUST SHOT THEM!!!
Why the fuck do you have a self destruct mechanism installed in the purifier in the first place? Why can a mechanism designed to purify water turn into a fucking radiation bomb? Why can't we just open the door right now and pull him out?
This is the most pointless sacrifice in any game I've ever played, ever.
Unless you count the good ending without Broken Steel. Bethesda is going 0 for 2 on these for Fallout.
Dad could have just given them the purifier, had us fall back, and come back and take the purifier with the Brotherhood of Steel. It's not like they wanted to blow it up either. It's not like Doctor Li and Lily were in any imminent danger. If he thought they were going to destroy it, WHY DID HE DESTROY IT HIMSELF?
This scene makes no sense. There is absolutely no justification for Dad's actions here, it's just a cheap shot.
"You find an NPC you've been spending the entire game so far trying to find? Congratulations, you get to watch him killed off right in front of you."
The amount of time Dad has interacted with the player at most is about an hour, if you followed him to Rivet City anyway.
"We have to get out of here. They'll be coming for us next. We've got to evacuate now!"
"I'm not leaving my father in there!"
"There's nothing anyone can do for him now. The radiation levels are lethal. You'd die the same way he did. We have to get out of here, now!"
"How do we get out of here?"
"We used an old, abandoned tunnel as an escape route once before, many years ago. Everyone should know how to find it. We need to get there right now. Let's go."
Or, you know, we could walk right out the front door? The Enclave are pretty much pushovers.
Li repeats the same line over and over again in her dialogue.
Since I still feel like bitching about the whole "Dad pointlessly killing himself" thing, I'd just like to say that I've never been this pissed off by a game before, maybe except for this games vanilla ending.
The Enclave sends eyebots down into the sewers. I assume as spies?
Where did they go? They don't follow you unless you talk to Doctor Li first.
They didn't bother following us, yet they ask why we left them there?
"This tunnel leads to the Citadel, the Brotherhood of Steel's fortress. We should be safe there, if we can make it."
"What's up ahead? You seem nervous."
"I don't know what's ahead. That's the problem. No one has used these tunnels in years. But we can't stay put; the Enclave will find us eventually. We have to get moving."
"You have a plan?"
"We need to keep everyone together, and we need to get through this tunnel as quickly as possible."
Li repeats the same thing over and over. I get it, escort mission, get through the tunnel quickly. Calm down.
"We're not safe until we reach the other side. You should stay close, and we'll follow behind you."
The Enclave are kind of annoying at long range. Energy weapons go through their armor like butter, but since our energy weapons skill is so low the metal blaster isn't really effective at long range.
Hunting Rifle is just as effective.
More eyebots floating through the sewers. Got to wonder how they record their footage.
We continue through the tunnels, and come to a locked door.
Yeah the hunting rifle can pierce the enclave armor pretty easily.
As someone who hoards ammo in this game, fights like these drive me insane. Can't get through it without wasting some ammo, that's why I have been using the metal blaster even though our character isn't very good at it: They drop the same ammo type, so we'll never be at a loss for it. Kind of an OCD thing.
Also stimpaks, I never want to use my stimpaks. Basically, we're holding off the Enclave while Li hacks the door open.
The door opens to a ton feral ghouls charging out the door.
Doctor Li wasn't kidding when she said there was stuff down here. If they were down here before, why are all these ghouls suddenly here now? It's not like it's directly connected to the metro or anything...
I managed to get like three headshots in a row on the ghouls nearby with the almost completely broken combat shotgun.
What now?
"Stop here? Are you crazy?"
"Garza is in need of medical attention immediately. He has a heart condition. I will not leave him behind."
"What can I do to help?"
"I don't have sufficient medical supplies with me, or else this wouldn't be a problem. If you have any Stimpaks, I would ask you to hand them over."
Stimpaks stop heart problems? Okay...
"[Speech, 100%] I don't have any meds on me, but what if we gave him some Buffout?
We have like 40 stimpaks, but we need them for the combat up ahead. We have like 30 buffout anyway.
"[SUCCESS] I... Normally I would never approve of this. If the situation weren't so serious... If you think this is the best course of action, we'll do it. I hope this isn't a mistake."
I don't get what's so wrong with buffout.
Garza takes it pretty well if you decide to leave him behind, hilariously enough.
Basically the Enclave goes through these areas above you so that they can take potshots at you. It's annoying, especially if you don't have any grenades on you.
I love the Perforator though, works pretty well in pretty much any situation.
Plasma weapons hurt though, I'll give the Enclave that.
A ghoul charges down the stairs after we open up a stairwell.
I really don't have much to say on this part of the game, it's just really an extended sewer section again. They expect you to get over dad's death pretty quick.
Li barely ducks out of the way of a fatal Metal Blaster shot aimed a ghoul.
For some strange reason the Brotherhood are stationed down there. It doesn't make any sense, but they're there simply to mow down a group of ghouls that are spawned as soon as you open the door.
And then the Brotherhood starts spraying flames and bullets widly into the area, even though we're right in the range of the ghouls. Thanks guys.
Impressive though. It's a nice scripted moment, though the silly behavior of the NPC's you have to escort kind of ruins it.
The NPC AI in this game is stupid. Thankfully, we got through that thing without any deaths on the scientists side. Though, I think Li has plot armor, the others are mere mortals who will die in a few shots.
Oddly enough, Anna Holt isn't part of that group at all. I wonder if this will come up later in the game... (No, she wasn't the one who was shot.)
Finally, we're safe. Now the stories going to get more interesting.
I'll leave it to you to decide whether that's a good or bad thing.
After we talk with the Brotherhood, we're going to play Operation Anchorage and some of the sidequests.
Another obligatory question:
What did you think of dad's "heroic" sacrifice in this part of the game?
Hello everybody, this is Dr. Horrible with the return of my Fallout 3 Let's Play. I apologize for the lapse in uploads, but they should be more consistent now.
In which young Liam has to deal with the most annoying npc ever.
EDIT:
I hated the 'sacrifice.' It was pointless and a cold attempt to make me feel bad. Only thing that made me feel bad was that I wouldn't hear Liam Neeson again in the game.
Honestly, I didn't care about James' sacrifice because I didn't care about him. And considering I played straight through the main plot, I think that shows a distinct failure in character building. All I remember feeling during this part of the game was gladness that an interesting enemy finally had been revealed. I actually did forget about James' death during the metro escape.
I never liked James as a character, seeing him die made me think that now I was free from the shackles of helping him, but no I still couldn't join the Enclave. How come Anna Holt can join them but I can't?
Also main characters dying or disappearing seems to have become a staple in Bethesda games.
In Morrowind Caius leaves during the main quest, in Oblivion the Emperor dies and then Jauffre becomes almost uesless and now in Fallout 3 James dies.
