I don't really have an answer to your question as I just can't recall an instance worse than this. But I do want to say something about Bao-dur. I often hear how he's a boring character compared to some of the more complex party members you acquire later on. But his character matches his history. He's just a quiet guy, he experienced something incredibly traumatic and so he internalises a lot of what he feels. Just my two cents anyway.

I think you're exactly right. You get the feeling in a lot of conversations with the guy that he really, really, doesn't want to bring up the war, but at the same time, now that the Exile has finally come back into his life, part of him feels like he finally has a chance to get a lot of this off his chest, and bring some closure to that chapter of his life. His character arc comes from watching the player's action, seeing how they changed/didn't change for the war, and deciding whether or not to finally lay down his burdens. The voice actor really nails him in that regard. Obviously, we can't hear it in the game, but Bao-Dur has a quieter, softer voice than most of the other party members (there's one who's kinda similar, but we'll get to that eventually), that really emphasizes his particular method of dealing with what he's seen.

I think a point that's been made before too is that Bao-Dur is probably the character that got screwed the worst by the cuts to the original version of the game - before the game got restored, a lot of his plot threads went nowhere or never got resolved.

IIRC his influence can be kind of finicky too, I know at least once I've done a playthrough where his conversation options just hit a brick wall because I didn't have enough influence to get any further with him, and I didn't have enough opportunities left to get that influence either.

Anywho, point is I suspect a lot of the people that criticise the character probably haven't been able to full experience him, for whatever reason.

If I built more efficiently it'd probably be fine but I often find myself abusing Atton's special ability here. (Other than that, Mira has a few hard fights if you want to maximise her special options, the combat tournament and the last boss fight can be tough)

I love Bao-Dur, most of all because although he's this quiet goody two-shoes, his feelings about the Mandalorian Wars aren't the easy answer you'd normally expect from a game. And it was bold to give someone with so much history with the PC, you learn more about what happened and whats going on from Bao-Dur than almost any other NPC in the game. I do wish they'd given you smarter dialogue options when you first meet him. There's no option for you recognising him which is absurd when you learn how close and familiar with each other they are. Plus I think it would have been a cool statement to the player to have a bunch of options on first meeting a PC that so implicitly acknowledge the history between them

I've never found the Tank Droid especially hard, but I agree with you about the fight outside the base, it's an absolute *****. We got a lot of lucky rolls int hat fight, and regular and frequent spam of medkits and force heal just about assured survival.

You're right: it is remarkably strange that no such option was added: especially when the game otherwise does a great job of fleshing out the character of the Exile through the list of dialogue options.

My worst time with the AI was when I was doing Carth's mission in the first game. The kid literally vanished right as I came in to get the mission done. The game code didn't even think he existed.

Dejarik is the game we saw R2 and Chewbacca play in A New Hope aboard the Millenium Falcon, y'know, the one with the holographic monsters and crap. Despite it looking similar to chess, it's actually a different game entirely: there are no pawns in Dejarik, and chess actually exists in the Star Wars universe. What we just played through was the true boss battle of Telos. I mentioned in the last update that the War Droid was merely the final test of combat skills, but was not the true boss. That was this conversation. Atris is one of the most interesting and complex characters in this game, and in a game filled to the brim with some of the best in videogaming history, that is certainly an impressive feat. I call this conversation a boss battle because we're trying to get to the nature of Atris, using various conversation options to debate our ideas and beliefs against hers. Because that's what this is: a debate. In fact, you don't even have to argue with her at all: you can fully agree with her, and submit yourself as being wrong in the past. But, hey, that just ain't as fun. I would argue that this is one of the most important conversations in the game, not just because of the introduction to Atris, but the fact that this dictates how your character feels about their past. Are they genuinely remorseful and apalled in their past actions, or are they steadfastly defiant in their belief in the righteousness of what they did? I tend to choose the latter, partly because I think it makes for a more interesting character than the standard "oh my past sucks boo hoo" archetype, and, at least, in my opinion, it complements the narrative a lot better. Regardless, this is an incredibly well executed scene, and serves as a testament to the incredible quality of not just the writing: but the scripting. So many games would have turned this into a binary good (oh i'm ever so sorry for my dickery in the past pretty please forgive me with sugar on top) and evil (war is good yummy blood) choice.

Oh, fans of Planescape: Torment? Remember when I said this game shared a number of similarities with that one? Rearrange the letters of Atris' name.

Confession time. I...am really not very good at these fights. Like, at all. They constantly whip my ass, particularly the final one of this little sidequest, and I only consistently win through the use of dirty, underhanded tactics. Grenades are your friend in this fight: they don't do too much damage, but it's worth it to hit all of them at once. And don't be afraid to be a cheap wee bastard: run around the arena as much as you like, as long as you don't accidentally step out, and once they're down to a suitable health level from the grenades, take them out one at a time, taking regular running breaks to heal.

Question Time! We've discussed an interesting take on the typical boss battle formula in this update, so what are your favorite "different" boss battles in gaming? For me, it's gotta be this one, but a close second goes to the battle with one of the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus (I can't remember the name, been years since I played it), because it just doesn't fight back. At all. Oh sure, it tries to brush you off like an insect, but it never actively takes an interest in killing you. But you killed it anyway, because a voice in your head told you it would bring back your girlfriend. Happens to us all.

I was looking forward to this bit the moment you started this LP. Definitely makes the long haul through Act 1 worth it. It was so bizarre the way they cut the conversation between The Handmaiden and Atris at the end there. In the cut version she just randomly shows up on your ship. Was weird.

Ahh but Nihilus, he's one of the great star wars villains. Alongside Vader in my opinion.

The reason? The best villains are reflective of the hero in some sense. Vader and Luke are reflective of each other, with vader showing what Luke could become if he fell to the dark side (and it's knowing this and the respect he feels for his father that ultimately saves him). But Nihilus and the Exile? Now that's a fascinating comparison. He's not the big bad, but he's important as a villain because he's basically what the Exile would have become if they didn't turn against war, if the "thing that makes the exile unique" had been continually fed with their connection to the force intact. In other words, the logical end to the Exile's powers, and showing just how terrible and frightening that power is.

Keep up the good work man.

I totally agree: many people complain that Nihilus is such an anticlimax when you meet him, and that he turned out to be lame, but that's the point. Nihilus symbolizes the inherent corruption and darkness of the Exile: not just of what might have been, but a potential (arguably inevitable) future for dark side players. There is a very good reason why Nihilus is a completely anonymous entity with only the barest hints of a backstory: he's not a person. He's a mirror, a reflection and a warning. Nihilus is metaphorically the exact same person as the Exile, and, at least, according to one of my more insane theories, is literally the dark side of the Exile that they removed from themselves when they cut themselves off from the force at Malachor V. This is the main reason I hate the Revan novel: not because it cheapened all the story potential for KotOR 3 by turning it into a lame advertisement for The Old Republic, (well, partly that), but because it reduced all the potential "Meetra Surik" had as a character. She's a fucking Force Vampire, for crying out loud! She's the larval form of Mandrakk! And what do they do with her? Make her a fucking Revan fangirl. Brilliant. But, hey. That's why I like to pretend that that book never happened. What you've accurately described is key to the plot and character of the Exile, and feeds into something I like to call "Ghosts of Exiles past, present, and yet to come" theory that we'll discuss later on.

Canonically, the exile was a light side female known as Meetra Surik. However, it is actually impossible to play a canonical playthrough of KotOR 2, because according to canon, Meetra Surik traveled with a companion that is exclusive to the male protagonist. It's all very odd.

blows my mind =D How did I never see that? I can't believe they actually managed to stick it in the game. And without TSLRCM you'd miss like 99% of why they did it

I think the main reason why so much of her role was cut was that she was originally meant to be the final boss in early drafts of the script. In Avellone's original draft, the Exile would fight and kill Kreia at the academy on Telos, with Atris already fled to Malachor with the Handmaidens to become the new Darth Traya. With all that absent from the final draft, I imagine they didn't feel too bothered about cutting a lot of her character if they had to. It's a shame the cut scenes weren't in the release version of the game: she really is a fantastic character, but we barely get to see that in the release version. That's changed now, though.

Hey there! Finally caught up, and I'm loving it! Thank you very much for showing me that scene between Atris and the Handmaiden, this is the first time I have seen it due to the fact that I can only play the Xbox version.

Also, funny thought popped into my head: when you fight the five handmaidens, planting mines around the area before the fight can be a recipe for success and hilarity .

Yeah - I remember basically just giving up on the Handmaiden fights (and another similar challenge on one of the later planets) because I'd always built my characters focussing on lightsabers rather than unarmed, and combat was something I suffered through rather than actually enjoyed in this game. But I've since seen all sorts of amusing ways to break these challenges.

Mines are one option. Once you're allowed to use force powers from memory you can just "blow" them out of the battle area. You can also apply stims and force buffs to yourself immediately before you start the fight and they'll still be in effect during the battle.

An interesting thing about this scene is that the original version of the game omitted the scene where Atris tells the so-called Last of the Handmaidens to spy on us. Therefore, in the release version, Atris appeared to be in as much in the dark of the Handmaiden's actions as we are, and creates a minor plot hole in Act III. It's one of those unfortunate omissions that really does a disservice to Atris' character: making her appear as a passive force in the events of the plot after she sends the Exile on their quest, rather than the key player in this "Dejarik" board of a story she really is.

Unfortunately, since it's a lightsaber, and not Excalibur, it deactivates itself as soon as Bob lets go of it, so it just kind of falls to the ground, and the atmosphere gets a lot more awkward.
