Wait...so...Atris said these Jedi were missing...but she knows what planet they're on? Lady, I'm not sure that word means what you think it means."

Bob: "Be that as it may, we need their help against the Sith. And I want to know what happened to me."

Before our conversation can continue, we hear footsteps from the cargo hold.

Essentially, she's a female Bob in combat, without the Force Powers. In any other playthrough, she's a great tank and an excellent combatant, but seeing as we already have an ass-kicking kung-fu character, we won't be using Handmaiden all that much.

And with that, the part disperses to their various parts of the ship. One of the things I really like about this game is that your crew feel a lot more dynamic than in the first game, where they just sat in their respective parts of the ship, never speaking to anyone or doing anything until you drop by. In this game, whenever you board the Hawk, you'll often get treated to scenes of your party members speaking to you of your own volition, or just hanging around. It's really awesome, and it's something that the Mass Effect series ended up adopting for it's third installment, where crew member finally did something other than calibrating the weapons or staring at a gun on a table.

Although Bao-Dur seems to contradicting Kreia's arguments on the Lightsaber a few updates ago, he's actually reinforcing it. The Lightsaber, while not defining a Jedi, is a key part of what a good Jedi is. It represents the point at which the Jedi has truly fulfilled their potential and become a Jedi Knight. It's said as much in Return of the Jedi, where Vader comments that Luke's training is complete when he builds his lightsaber. The Lightsaber, Bao-Dur argues, is the final component of what makes up a Jedi, although the Player can reject this, and not even use a lightsaber.

Bob: "With the Jedi Enclaves all destroyed, it won't be easy gathering the parts."

Bob: "Yeah, I think I lent you mine that night on Dxun we all got drunk. I found it in the stomach of a Storm Beast."

So, here's a n interesting choice for you all: I will be gathering the parts and constructing the Lightsaber, but do you want to use it? Or do you want to keep clobberin' our enemies with our fists of fury? We'll be having a formal vote on the subject before we forge the Saber, but feel free to express your opinion on the subject now.

We meet up with T3 and Atton elsewhere on the ship.

Hilarious jab at the horrendousness of Pazaak in the original game, or just a random conversation about something eerily similar to it? You make the call.

but the answer is the former

We'll talk more with the Handmaiden very soon. For now, Kreia wished to whine to us.

Bob: "Kreia, would you mind not being so utterly evil? It's starting to unnerve me."

This game is seed by many to be the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment. One of that games many strengths was it's intelligent deconstruction and subversion of both RPG tropes and mechanics: for example, your character, the Nameless One, did not gain experience as such, rather, leveling up represented the slow recovery of your memories. This game does similar things to that, but it's a far darker and more brutal deconstruction than Planescape, which could get very comedic at times. Kreia is essentially taking EXP points as literal things within the universe, and points out something that actually makes a lot of sense: surely that, if you gained XP points from doing some guy's groceries, then he could have gained XP from doing that, and that going around completing every quest they can find, as RPG players are want to do, might actually be depriving them of the strength they need to grow, in the same way that if you hand your child everything on a silver platter, they'll never properly grow and will end up as greedy, entitled, pricks. So, essentially, Kreia is claiming that RPG players ARE vampires, in a metatextual sense.

And yes, this is not the last time this game will go all Meta on our asses. It gets weird at times.

Before we set off, there's two more people to speak to. First, we chat with Atton.

Bob: "It helped you before? How did it's parts get scattered across the galaxy?"

Bob: "I had to ask. Thanks anyway, T3."

And, that's it for now. It's time to finally begin the adventure, and set off for the big, bad, galaxy. We have a number of destinations to choose from, and it's up to you where we head first!

Nar Shaddaa - A moon of Nal Hutta, Nar Shaddaa is infamous across the galaxy as a wretched hive of scum and villiany: it may look like Coruscant on the surface, but scratch the surface you'll find a filthy, crime-infested hellhole. According to Atris' databanks, Master Zez-Kai Ell is here.

Dantooine - Once home to a Jedi Enclave, Dantooine was devestated by Malak in the Jedi Civil War, and is barely a shadow of it's former self. According to Atris' databanks, Master Vrook is here.

Onderon - A planet that featured prominently in the Tales of the Jedi comics that introduced the Old Republic era, Onderon is a world steeped in the history of the Sith. According to Atris' Databanks, Master Kavar is here.

Korriban - Ancestral homeworld of the Sith, this was once the stronghold of the Sith armada, but was devestated in the Sith Civil War following Revan's claiming of the Star Forge. According to Atris' databanks, Master Vash is here.

I think rather than the Kreia thing being a 'if exp were real' thing, it's the reverse they're using the mechanic to make a side of a real world argument. I can imagine a certain sort of branch of objectivist philosophy really believing that if you're helping someone you're denying them the opportunity to learn to stand on their own feet.

As to the choices, I think some lightsaber fighting screens might be cool at some point, but I'm curious to see if you can beat the game with the Kung Fu set-up. Nar Shadda is my favourite planet but maybe it's better to do something else first, Onderon or Dantooine (probably Dantooine although I guess the person you meet on Onderon is pretty cool. I like delaying Onderon because then the sequencing goes a little weird, but doing it first might book-ends things nicely)

Also, funny thought popped into my head: when you fight the five handmaidens, planting mines around the area before the fight can be a recipe for success and hilarity ;) .
They patched that out with the TSLRCM :( It registers as the 'use items' thing or something.

The best way to do the fight now is to run at the handmaidens and push them out of the arena =D

It definitely does match more radical objectivist theory, which makes me think that Kreia is Ayn Rand IN SPACE, which is awesome. However, I do think it's something that can be taken in both the objectivist real world argument and the metatextual "EXP is literally real in the game's world", though the former idea bugs me a little with her later comments which boil down to "whatever you do, you've made a horrible mistake and ruined someone's life, and I will whinge at you no matter what you do".

When Kreia is talking about the betrayer
Is she referring to herself or is she referring to Atris at this point? With Atris meant to end up the new Traya later on in the game it seems as though it could be a reference to her, instead of it being Kreia.

I'll put my vote in for Onderon, give our steadfast pilot a little more hell and meet an old friend.

You're making me nostalgic, I've gotta go back and play this game again at some point :)

On the choices:

- Stick with the no-lightsabers thing, IMO. I'm fascinated to see how the kung fu plays out in some of the later stages of the game.

- As for the first planet, I'm going to vote Onderon as well.

We should still have enough opportunities to get our influence with G0-T0 all the way up even if we don't pick him up straight away, right? Plus Mandalore is more fun :)

Some fantastic conversations here. The things the characters talk about have stuck with me for years. As for the polls, I'll vote no lightsaber because I've never seen it happen. But for planet I'm voting Nar Shaddaa. You get the most companions on that planet and it just kinda feels right, what with the whole Jedi bounty thing the Exile has been hearing about for ages. I'd also leave Korriban till last, considering a very special moment in a very dark cave.

It's kind of both at this point. When she mentions that Atris is "taking the first steps" and following the same path she did, it's clear that she's referring to Atris's slow fall to the dark side to become the new Darth Traya. However, Kreia also recognizes that she will have to play the role of Darth Traya again at some point, when she tells the Exile that she "must remain hidden until the time is right".

That shouldn't be a problem. That companion responds well to being a pragmatic dick, and there's plenty of opportunities to do that away from Onderon.

Great update! Personally I vote Nar Shaddaa, given you get 2 new companions there and there's a lot of opportunities to gain influence with Atton and Bao-Dur.

Awesome updates :D my vote is on Dantooine, I usually went there first every time, but generally because i felt it was the planet in which you could complete your lightsaber the fastest.

I'm voting with Nar Shaddaa, simply because if you're planning on a DS playthrough, you'll have Mira over the Wookiee.

Concerning the lightsabers, make one if the game gets too hard and have it as a fallback plan.

Regarding what planet to hit, there are pros and cons.

Nar Shaddaa - You pick up 2 companions, but the fights are HARD, mandatory, and sometimes have to be done with odd party configurations. I've played this game many times, am very good at character specs, and TSLRCM Nar Shaddaa is fucking murder. Only go if you think you can pull it off without the XP you'd get by doing another planet first. Also, depending on your current alignment, you may want to wait, depending on which companion you want to grab. Also, the story feels bigger than any of the other planets, it seems best to not start with it.

Onderon - Most fun planet to do, you get 1 companion, and because of the structure of the quests, it's best to do it early so that the call to complete the finale has more dramatic effect. Con? Influence can be gotten here with otherwise hard-to-please companions, and as it's (for me, anyways) the most fun planet, it might be better to leave it for second.

Dantooine - Plenty of fun sidequests, no companions, you can leave at most any time. Good place to go if you want XP,

Korriban - No companions gained, pretty fast to do, the cave is fun but can only be done when you're full dark/light, so only go once there. Least interesting planet, though, and little influence to be gained, so it shouldn't be at the top of your list.

So yeah, I vote Onderon first, and if you do go for Nar Shaddaa, be sure you know what you're doing.

Regarding the Lightsaber/Fists question, I say mix it up. There are no fist-specific feats, save the ones you acquire by sparring with Handmaiden, so you aren't neglecting your fist power by using a lightsaber now and again. Mix it up so the fighting stays fresh, and as comic relief requires. Hell, I usually have my characters alternate between Dual Pistols and Dual Weapon-Finessed Lightsabers.

*ahem* Might want to spoiler a bit of that content Smiley, just in case anyone reading this hasn't played the game before.

Everything you've said has got me thinking though - got a question about the Restored Content Mod we're playing with:

This update tells us that Master Vash is on Korriban, just like the regular version of the game... which is one of the first things I was interested in seeing how this latest restored content mod handles.

I take it we don't have the option to go to the new/restored droid planet yet?

More EXP doesn't necessarily help though right? Because the enemies scale with your level. (I've always been curious about how they balance that. I'm playing Dragon Age at the moment and having the same thoughts). More exp gives you more utility, but whether it helps comes down to how they balanced the scaling. I guess you'll lack AoE early on to deal with the cantina place and maybe lack shields too which can be pretty vital here.

Awesome work once again!

As for the choices, I'm torn between Nar Shadaa and Onderon. Nar Shadaa would be great for the obvious reasons stated by others above: You'll pick up three companions, you'll unlock the final piece of Atton's past there, and I'd be interesting to see how you would fare in Nar Shadaa with fists only. However as others said, it can be hell, and with unarmed fighting, I really can't imagine how much you'll struggle. As BrotherRool said, you'll lack AoE force powers which will make the Jekk Jekk Tarr and most other fights afterwards a pain to complete.

Onderon would be my other choice, simply because I always go there first. It is a good starter planet because you can build your lightsaber there in a well-paced scenario, and the fights are not as hectic as on Nar Shadaa, the enemies would be more susceptible to your unarmed attacks.

As for the lightsaber/fists decision, I say go fists! Although it would pain me personally to go through without a lightsaber, you've been doing well so far, so I say keep going! See how well you fare.

And for the planets, I say screw it: Go to Nar Shadaa.

True, enemies scale (at least, I assume they do), but with intelligent choices of attributes and feats, you will usually outstrip the autolevel power curve. For instance, if you go to Nar Shaddaa first, I doubt T3 would have Master TWF, and Atton probably wouldn't have been able to get a second skill to tier 3. Moreover, some higher-level force powers are so OP it makes any fights with a Jedi on the squad unloseable. (Force Wave, Master Heal, Master Speed, etc. With moderately good wisdom, you can have force regen high enough that it lets you cast these as much as you like, without having to wait to regen).

The problem isn't just the difficulty of the enemies - The Exile can usually solo most fights by this point. It's that the enemies are difficult, and you have to solo them with characters who suck at fighting. Atton has a solo fight. And T3 has a solo fight. And Mira/Hanharr has a solo fight (not a problem for Hanharr, lol). Then, in TSLRCM, you have to fight through most of Nar Shaddaa's streets, fighting waves of grenade-hurling enemies every 5 steps. You get a party for this part, but I think it's T3, Atton, and Mira/Hanharr (though I could be wrong, it could just be anyone, but even so, it's tough as all hell).

Although, come to think of it, you can usually find equipment early on which won't become outdated until you're such a high level that you get ridiculous drops with most enemies, which usually doesn't happen until around the 4th planet.

Sorry, thought I was sufficiently vague with details. Is it better now?

Rather than finding Vash on Korriban, we find coordinates which lead you to the droid planet. I stopped at that point, however, because the voice acting they used to write in the droid planet was so abominable my ears bled. Hope Woodaba has a higher tolerance for that sort of thing than me, I am curious to see what happens.

Also, as an aside, I've heard so many good things about Planescape: Torment, Tides of Numenera has caught my eye, etc. - but frankly, my tastes are shaped by my experience, so the isometric, low-graphic game is hard for me to push myself through (I am trying), so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good Planescape: Torment Let's Play to me, just in case I can't find the time/energy?

Alright, looks like our first stop is Nar Shaddaa, probably followed by Onderon. And yes, Nar Shaddaa is probably the hardest world because of a few things we'll get into later, but I am a cheap bastard, and not below using dirty, underhanded tricks to succeed. And, hey! It's not like the game doesn't have it's fair share of underhanded tactics!

Stupid Handmaiden's quest...

Ha! My friend, I have braved both Final Fantasy X and Birdemic (an indie movie that seems to have every character played by Tommy Wiseau). Terrible mod voice acting cannot sway me! (but it is pretty horrendous)

While I would still HIGHLY recommend playing Planescape: Torment (i've actually found it to be the most accessible Infinity Engine game, my non-old school RPG inclined friends got into it much better than both Baldur's Gate 1 and Icewind Dale, despite the fact that the mechanics of Torment are arguably inferior to those games), there are a few Let's Play's I would recommend. There's an interesting one by Shadow Catboy over on the LP Archive that's kinda like a hybrid between a fan fiction and a LP, which may not be to your tastes, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. You can find it here.

In terms of video LPs...I'm not really the person to ask, because I generally don't like video LP's, but I thought TheGentlemanGamer's playthrough on Youtube was pretty decent.

Absolutely loved reading through this. Kung-fu Bob Bindo has been great, especially with wisecracking T3 on hand.

The plot analysis has been great - I think I missed a lot of its deeper meaning when I first played it; makes me very, very tempted to breakout my copy of KOTOR II.
I always struggled to get everyone's influence up; don't think I managed to develop the party players far enough.

It seems like the restored content mod might be worth it. Is the voice acting THAT bad? Are there any graphic update mods recommended by anyone?

Keep up the great LP. Will definitely have to reinstall it (though only once I've got the balls to get through Amnesia)
