While unfortunately not the Sectoids, I did get a chance to exact my vengeance on the aliens for Manilla and for trashing my tank again. Snake never even knew what hit him. Still felt a bit jittery seeing the reports on the battle that went on inside the UFO, knowing i couldn't do anything about that. It's an odd feeling, knowing the UCV's invaluable recon and firepower is an asset, yet at the same time a hindrance.

Also, how many more times can we be this lucky before it bites us in the ass?

A lucky mission. Higs almost bit it when the UFO was breached. I guess me hoping he didn't get shot paid off. But barely. I understand wanting to kill the aliens, and I feel for him, but safety first. I think we should try using grenades more often, just chuck a few in before we storm a UFO to make sure its all clear, or clear a bigger hole and let the tank in to check things first. I dunno, tactics aren't my place. I just don't want to go to a funeral.

I think I'll drop by Captain Shanks, congratulate him on his performance, and thank him for leading the squad so there weren't any casualties. He earned that. A couple soldiers who's names I can never remember praised his leadership and levelheadedness under pressure, and I feel it only appropriate to do the same. He earned it.

I'll also drop by Ace to see how he's doing. No one seems to talk to him much, no matter how much they love his tank support.

I am humbled. After the mission today, I got some time to talk to Blingie. She.. told me I should be more careful. That recklessness wouldn't get any aliens killed. I was just about to retort when I realised she was right. I got that blank stare as realisation hit me.. Caroline, Jenny, her.. they won't gain anything if I get killed. Zealotry is one thing, recklessness another. I'm still just one soldier out there, and we have been exceedingly lucky. Luck will not win us this war however. Cooperation, strength of will, planning and expertise will. I'm extremely glad she reminded me of this. Got her a beer for the favour she might not know she did me, and loosened up most of all. Had a fun evening for the first time in months. She's a special lady. Wonder if she's available. Oh, there I go again, hopeless, foolish romantic.

Just to point out at this juncture because some journals have mentioned it, Bling Cat II is not the only female in the squad. At least Looney and Combined are as well (though possibly their big guns are more intimidating...), and possibly some others that I haven't deployed named out of armour (the only time you can see a gender) so don't know about. You can see them in previous updates.

I figured as much after a while, when I thought about it and looked into it. Never did assume, but I noticed some did.

Excerpt Personal Log, General McSwine

Day 106, On the Intersection of Digestive Waste Matter and Rotary Air Impellers.

After the last UFO was recovered, we got promising news from the science division, they had cracked the safety lockouts on one of the aliens' weapons. The largest one, the Heavy Plasma.

This weapon is a massive increase in firepower, accuracy, and efficiency over anything we possess. It has been cleared for use by our snipers for initial field deployment, with general issue pending the wider availability of ammunition for it.

Our next few days were spent at near fever pitch, making ready for the switch on of our decryption suite in the HyperWave Decoder. But not a man or woman among us could have been prepared for what it revealed.

----

X-Com Incident Report, April 23rd

Mere hours after switch on of the Hyperwave Decoder, we got far more than we bargained for out of it. Two UFO incursions all but simultaneously, and transmissions indicated they were in the final stages of establishing a permanent base on Earth soil.

Larger than any we've so far encountered, and too large for our interceptors to shoot down one on one.

A third UFO, more familiar this time, followed hot on their heels.

We launched everything we had. Even if we couldn't shoot the larger craft down we could track them to their destinations.

The bad news got worse, however, when the comms line from South East Asia squawked. They'd one upped us. An even larger ship was on their radar.

We were in the middle of a ten bell shit alarm at the fan factory.

Our interceptors were ordered to hold and follow, tracking all four UFOs was no mean feat, but we need to know where they are going.

The gun camera in one of the interceptors sends back an image of the largest ship. It's a monster, fully thirty metres across and three stories high.

Eventually, one of the supply ships lands, and an interceptor is diverted to shoot down the scout vessel. Our interceptors are running out of fuel, and the largest vessel has slipped the net. We have to take our chance with this supply ship, it won't hang around for long.

Transcript of briefing to full X-Com combat staff, April 23rd, General McSwine, Colonel Birras

McSwine: Gentlemen, this is the first time I have briefed all of you personally for an operation, and as you may be aware, this is big. The next few days will see the most intense combat X-Com has faced since the start of the war. We have no less than four intruders, and we will be on constant combat rotation until they are shot down or scared off. Even then we will likely have to assault an alien facility here on earth. This will not be easy, but I know that you will make X-Com, and your planet, proud.

Our first target will be a vessel that has landed in Northern Russia, we have to assault it now, we can't wait for daylight and if it chooses to leave we can't stop it. This vessel is unlike any we've seen before, it's bigger, most likely has a larger crew, and may have access to heavier weapons. Be careful out there.

Birras: You know the drill boys and girls, night fighting means flares out, eyes open. When we get into the craft, everyone needs to be at their sharpest, we have no idea what's in there or where it might be able to hide, one slip could kill us all. If we're good, and we're lucky, we'll get to come home in time to turn around and go right back into it.

This is it. The biggest mission by far yet. By what our sensors have picked up, it will constitute of at least four dangerous missions, one of which will be gruesome. I have written Caroline and Jenny and told them of this. Catriona knows of the gravity of this as well as I do, but I still took the liberty to talk to her about it. I think we were both comforted by the talk we had. We are all a bit afraid, and with good cause. It will be up to us lower level leaders to keep the troops motivated in the battle and fighting strong through all this. Casualties are to be expected so we can take all precautions in preventing them.
We WILL drive them off our home once more!

OOH ALIEN BASE ASSAULT! This calls for a journal entry!

Watch out for Blaster Launchers. Bases usually have a alien Commander carrying one, and nothing is quite as scary as a High explosive grenade shot like a GUIDED ROCKET.

---

Journal Entry, 4/23/99
Jason "Cyberoth" Holt, X-Com

I can't believe it. An alien base...on Earth. This is MUCH bigger then even a standard terror mission. Some of the guys in Sci Div say there might be high ranking aliens there. Commanders who know where the aliens are striking from. But something has been bothering me ever since our first run in with those floating disks.

The aliens have grenades. Impressive grenades. And those disks...They exploded pretty impressively too. These aliens base all their technology around E-115. But the only methods of generating a boom is from a handtossed grenade or a gas tank explosion in a tank? As advanced as these aliens are, they don't use anything like a rocket?

I don't believe that. The aliens still haven't fielded their biggest weapon yet. SURELY....SURELY they have some bigger guns then these plasma cannons.

And they probably have them in this base. We need to be alert when he storm this base, or else we're going to have to hold some funerals, and the Lazarus docs are going to have to get busy again.

Figures. Some of the soldiers on the base start opening up to me and at least saying "hi", this happens; something so serious General McSwine had to talk to us face-to-face; an Alien Base on Earth. On the one hand we at least get a shot to take the fight to the aliens directly. On the other hand we have no idea what we'll find in there, much less what they're armed with.

Hell we don't even know if we can get the tank in there.

Anyway I have to finish this up, report just came in that the Skyranger is touching down outside the landed supply ship, and I'm going to assume the LZ will be as hot as it is during city defense. Hope we all come through this okay.

twenty and three rotations of the moon, fourth turn of the calender.
Fury, CAPSLOCK FURY.

Everything I have trained for since signing up to this operation has lead me too this moment. Everything I have done before the next few days means absolutely nothing when compared to the vast importance of the next few missions over the next few days. They have finally made significant planet fall, apparently they have a base here on earth. Those filthy scum buckets have inhabited our planet. Well not for long, that is why this mission is so important. We must uproot this sick infection before it ever begins, we must purge the invaders from amongst us; by the shining lance of laser, the burning mace of plasma, and the explosive fury of rocket launchers. By the end of this operation the aliens will know they chose the wrong planet to mess with. By tomorrow they shall know fear. By tomorrow they will have seen THE FURY.

THE FURY OF CAPS OUT.

Stopped by the target range as I do daily, and had a pleasant suprise. New toys! The scientist who ran me thru using it gave some techno-babble explanation of how it works. I really didn't care, all I needed to know was its more accurate and more powerful than my old weapon. True, Its kind of sad to se "Jenn" decomissioned, but hell if this new one isn't sexier all around. He called it a Heavy Plasma Rifle. I think I'll call it "Heidi". Can't wait to pop some alien skulls (or whatever the hell they have) with her.

The General briefed us in person for the first time, so you know this mission is gonna be big. I'm a little nervous, not sure if I am next in the combat rotation. I like the action, but from the descriptions of the target, this is gonna be one hell of a fight. Heres hoping everyone makes it back alive.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Ground Assault 5

Hilly terrain forced a touchdown some distance from this UFO. In the dark, even getting to it will be a significant challenge.

The scale of that challenge was made apparent as soon as AceDiamond fires up the UCV engine and leaves the Skyranger, shots slam into the rear armour from a seemingly impossible angle. The UCV is heavily damaged but not destroyed. Fortunately, the highly modular design makes the vehicle easy to repair, we'll be needing it.

Eventually, he spots the culprit, an alien hiding in the blind spot under the nose of the skyranger.

Cyberoth II and Bling Cat II disembark and open fire, Bling Cat eventually scores the kill.

The team disperse, laying out flares. AceDiamond calls out another alien to the west revealed by flarelight.

Looney lines up and gives it a taste of it's own medicine with one of the newly deployed Heavy Plasma guns.

Advancing further, the squad spots another alien north of the UFO. Cyberoth II and Gamebrain89 open fire, Cyberoth II misses and though Gamebrain89 hits the alien doesn't go down. Jack Lavish eventually finishes it off, and as he does so a shot crackles past his head from the darkness.

More fire streaks in on Jack Lavish, this time with more accuracy, he is hit twice but the Power Suit takes the hits in stride. He throws out a flare and illuminates the shooter. The mass of fire directed at it made it difficult for anyone to confirm the kill.

As the squad crests the hill due east of the landed UFO, Combined comes under fire from the south, the squad spreads out into the woods, and eventually Cyberoth II spots the firer. Cyberoth II and Gamebrain89 open fire, but the alien is covered behind a hill and they cannot hit it.

The alien returns fire, Gamebrain89 is hit, but once more the shot does not penetrate the Power Suit. Gamebrain89 returns fire and this time is able to kill the alien.

The LZ is cleared, and the squad prepares to assault the UFO. Due to it's size, two points of entry are identified. A Squad, led by Colonel Birras, will enter the western door.

B Squad, led by Captain Armitage Shanks, will breach in through the eastern wall.

Shanks' charge goes off and the squad rush in.

An alien exits the door opposite the breach point and takes a shot at Bling Cat II, the run of luck continues, and the Power Suit performs again, and Bling Cat II pursues the alien back through the door. She finds it cowering in a corner and ends it's misery.

Higurashi, entering with A Squad, enters the central room from the other side to clear any blind spots where aliens could hide from Bling Cat II, but there are none. Armitage Shanks, meanwhile, rounds the corner to the north side of the UFO and immediately spots another alien around the corner, draws a laser pistol and shoots it down. As it's comrade comes to investigate, Shanks fires off another shot and the second alien is down as well.

The squad converge to investigate the two strange holes in the celing, they appear to be part of a gravity control system that allows transport between floors of the UFO. Each squad takes position at one of these grav lifts and readies themselves to explore the next level.

B Squad are first to hit the second floor, and find that their grav lift has no entrances or exits on this floor.

Armitage Shanks' alert eyes spot another alien on the floor above, however, and he opens fire once more.

Another alien is claimed by the spitting death of the laser pistol.

Meanwhile, A Squad have found that their grav lift does exit onto the second level, they take up defensive positions.

As they disperse, they see the ship's sickening cargo, processed and dismembered organs and entrails stored in suspension vats. The results of alien cattle mutilations and maybe worse, processed for food.

B squad find the bridge, and Armitage Shanks attempts to stun the lone alien present, suspecting it to be the highest ranked alien present, the stun bomb misses, however, and he is forced to use his laser pistol to finish it.

Report Ends

----

Luck has served us well once again*. The Power Suit is imperfect protection against alien weapons, but on this operation it performed with flying colours. We have seized an alien supply vessel, a bumper haul of Elerium, and hopefully offered a setback to the establishment of an alien base on earth.

----

* OOC Note: Unbelievable luck, in the case of Jack Lavish, who took two heavy plasma shots to the face, most of the other hits we took were from plasma pistols, which don't really offer much threat to the front of a Power Suit, but Heavy Plasmas are still very likely to be a one shot kill.

Higs: That was fucking unbelievable! I can't believe the luck you had. Who survives two shots like that to the face? *pats his back*
You gotta have some guardian angels and shit!
Jack Lavish: Yeah, well, they've always been by my side. *chuckle*
Higs: I gotta say, Bling, I got a little worried when you ran off to finish that alien in the UFO though. Not that I needed to be..
Bling: Damn straight you don't.
Birras: Well men, that was much easier than what we expected, but don't get over-confident. We were lucky they did not have heavier weaponry. That aside, incredible work today.
Everyone: HOO-HAH!

We got lucky again. I shouldn't complain really. The tank almost didn't make it through but it and the power armor of our troops held up under fire and we captured a wealth of equipment from the supply ship. At the very least we'll have put a crimp in their operations. Anyway I have a feeling there will be little time for rest before the next mission, there's still that downed UFO to capture.

Anyway I have to get back to running diagnostics while I wait for the Skyranger to get back so the techs can repair the tank. Still haven't named this one, so far it seems naming them has been a bit of a curse.

((This is a very awesome idea, and I wish I got in on it a while ago. Personally, I abused the "make laser weapons for money" thing, personally, though I can see how the game is more difficult without it.

Anyway, best of luck.))
