I think I'll need to have the techs run some diagnostics on Tom Servo's plasma cannon. I know that Muton armor is strong but they shouldn't have been shrugging off as much plasma fire that I poured into them. Hopefully my shots will be a lot more lethal when we get to Cydonia.

The aliens are running scared now, especially given how many of the Mutons we saw trying to retreat from us. They have to know this war is going to be over soon and that they are not going to be the winners.

It's getting pretty difficult to keep a clear head at the moment. The rumour is that X-COM command have a plan to finish the war for good. Engineering division is a hive of activity at the moment over a spacecraft bigger than any other X-COM craft in service. Apparently, this craft will be used to strike at the heart of alien operations on Mars. There is hope again -- we might be able to finish them off for good. No more alien terror strikes, no more harvesting of our people, no more night missions facing monstrous nightmare horrors, no more alien threat hanging like the sword of Damocles over the planet. But its dangerous to think like this, because these are the moments when you relax and drop your guard. We're still going on missions like never before, and there's still every chance an alien could get lucky. Still its nice to think that soon, maybe a lot sooner than any of us realise, we could all be swapping war stories from the 'old days' in the X-COM bar.

A resounding "yes" is the answer. The XCS-Avenger is currently be fabricated as we speak, not a bad name, would've preferred "Thunderchild" myself, but its the ship itself that matters. If I get to Mars, I probably won't be coming back, it is millions of miles away after all, but I wouldn't give up my chance to set foot on the soil of another planet, even if I never get back to Earth, it will be more than worth it.

Glad to have comrade Sgt Higs back with us. It has been a long break for him. as they say, the lucky skunk. He's even got to acquaint himself with the hottest nurse this side of the planet.

Comrade Higs told me after the last sortie that he felt like he was burning with a new fire unlike anything before. Made him spew out Chinese Vodka all over the table when I told him it was probably the leftover plasma in his gut that was burning.

Speaking of which, I managed to borrow a full size Chrysallid model from Sci Division. Gonna hang it over comrade Sgt Evil's bunk while he's asleep tonight. It's gonna be one heck of a wake-up call tomorrow.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 41

Skyranger 2 had launched to recover the latest downed terror ship. It had crashed in heavy jungle, so there would be plenty of places for Chryssalids to hide.

AceDiamond moved the hovertank out and confirmed the worst. The crash site was crawling with the horrors.









With no time to waste before the skyranger was overwhelmed, Vanilla Gorilla rushed out and blasted the first one.



Longshot disembarked to cover his back, and blasted the second to the southwest.



Preacher Saul dived out after them and blasted the last, and was able to turn his weapon on the Snakeman standing next to the ramp as well.





When the inithal rush of combat had subsided, the squad began to disperse. The heavy ground cover made scouting by hovertank more important than ever. AceDiamond soon spotted another alien to the north however.



And Looney put it down.



At that point, a snakeman charged out of the UFO's western door and fired a stun bomb, the small explosive slammed into the side of CAPSLOCK FURY's head and detonating, blacking him out.



Return fire from Vanilla Gorilla and Preacher Saul ensured that the creature was not able to fire again, and the cautious advance resumed. AceDiamond took the hovertank around the back of the crashed UFO and spotted yet another snakeman.



He opened fire, hitting the creature, it's return fire was wildly off target, and AceDiamond was able to blast it with no trouble.



Advancing, he came upon a second alien behind the craft, which met the same fate as the first.



Whilst Ace scouted the rear of the UFO, and the teams entered the door, CAPSLOCK FURY shook off the effects of the stun grenade and staggered to his feet, collecting his gear he moved in to support the assault.



The team met no resistance on the ground floor, and proceeded to the second, as they did so, a snakeman dived down one of the ambush holes in the floor, but was spotted and blasted by Gamebrain89 covering the rear.



Gamebrainu89 used his flying suit to move up through the hole, and spotted another alien above, apparently unarmed.



He wasted no time putting it down. Meanwhile, the team moved out of the elevator shaft, and Longshot spotted another alien waiting in the corridors.



He gave the creature no chance to fire, it was killed instantly.

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine



Despite the heavy vegetation, the aliens were unable to hide from the aerial scouting techniques employed by X-Com, the Chryssalids' ambush failed, and we have neutralised yet another strike on civilians.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 42

A rather less stressful mission, albeit one fought at night, awaited the crew of Skyranger 1. Recovering the downed Floater scout.

The LZ was quiet, and as AceDiamond moved the hovertank forward, it came under fire from the north, he spotted a floater on the roof of a barn.



RootOfAllEvil and Bling Cat II both flew to altitude and opened fire, but the creature survived until Dekkarax shot at it from the ground.

Another alien revealed it's presence by firing on the hovertank.



This one did not survive RootOfAllEvil's shot.



A third floated up over the roof of the barn and fired on the UCV from the east, AceDiamond rotated the turret and blasted it down again. Meanwhile, Higurashi burst into the UFO and killed the lone alien within.

Once again, these scouts are poorly crewed. Either the enemy is holding forces in reserve, or attrition is hitting him harder than we have anticipated.

So we got a second Skyranger, and I am assigned to the B squad. They are some good squadmates, and we work well together. Caps is pretty freaking tough, taking a stun bomb to the head and shaking it off like that. My shot average is staying up, thanks to the practice I got in while I was in the sickbay.

The Sci-Div guys got the Avenger blueprints ready to go, and I guess they already have the engineers working on it. we are getting close. Just a little while longer and we can take the fight to their doorstep.

Fury, Capslock fury.
nineteenth spin of the sun, seventh turn of the calendar.

I just got back from the infirmary. The doctors seemed convinced that I need extensive medical examinations after taking that stun bomb to the back of the head. No less then three of our medics told me that there may be some long term repercussions associated with the blast I took, and none of them believed me when I told them that I felt as right as rain. They wanted to hold me over night but I insisted that the good work of the lord doesn't wait, and there is no way I am letting my squadies fight against those xenos bastards without me by their side.

I'm sure this wound has made me something of a minor celebrity, on the trip back to base Longshot sat beside me and gently patted me on the back of the helmet, wistfully saying "And I thought I was lucky."

With each passing mission I am sure our squads synergy will only improve - you need only look at gamebrains shooting - so that by the time we are ready to strike these desecration's to gods green earth on their home ground we will be a well ironed machine ready to deliver the righteous fury of the lord right at their door step.

After the frantic pace of the previous few days, we were allowed some days to rest. One alien vessel was detected in this period.



However, rather than making for a city to attack as expected, the craft left atmosphere as soon as a Firestorm moved to engage it.

X-Com Incident Report, 22nd July

Our next taste of real action came a few days later. Another alien vessel was detected on approach to Canada.



It was intercepted and shot down over the eastern United States, and Skyranger 1 was dispatched to recover.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 42

The Skyranger set down with a large farmhouse between it and the crashed UFO. Bling Cat II used her flying suit to get in position on the farmhouse roof, and spotted an alien to the southwest.



She fired and hit the enemy, but it survived. RootOfAllEvil moved around the southern edge of the farmhouse and finished it off.



The team swept the area and found no more resistance. They moved to breach the UFO, and as Kevvers approached the breach point, he spotted another alien in the bridge area and blasted it.



The rest of the crew were holed up in the northern arm of the vessel.



Kevvers and Combined II pincered them from the breach and the doorway, killing first one.



Then the other.

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine



A short and entirely routine recovery, however the value of preventing infiltration agents from operating is still vast, our final strike may be close, but when it is over there will be much to clean up, and the more governments we have to purge, the longer that will take.

X-Com Incident Report, 24th July

A rather more serious incident occured on the 24th, frustrating the aliens' attempts to establish a base had, it seems, provoked them into using a battleship to do the job.



We know from the vessel captured during the United States defection that we still have no weapons capable of matching these vessels in the air, so it was decided to shadow the craft with a Skyranger and assault it when it landed. It eventually did so in southern Saudi Arabia.



Skyranger 1 was soon on the scene to attack the aliens.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Ground Assault 8

Assaulting a battleship was no mean feat, and fierce resistance was expected from alien forces on this mission. AceDiamond immediately spotted two aliens to the north and northwest.





Higurashi disembarked and killed the first.



whilst Jack Lavish dealt with the second.



Dekkarax spotted a third to the southwest.



And was able to kill it too.



The rest of the squad deployed, and as the last few left the Skyranger, a hideous noise was heard, the whine of an incoming Blaster Bomb. The guided missile was fortunately off target, missing Birras' head by mere inches and sailing off into the distance*. It was impossible to locate the firer, and the team began to move more cautiously, ensuring that enemy scouts did not live to relay their position to their heavy support.

One was spotted far to the northwest hiding behind a dune.



And another under the shadow of the battleship.



Bling Cat II and RootOfAllEvil flew up to engage the enemy behind the dune, and RootOfAllEvil was able to kill it.



Whilst Dekkarax and Kevvers both opened fire on the one under the ship, putting it out of commission as well.



Advancing southwards, Higurashi spotted another alien scout.



And was able to put it down.



Eventually, Schizzy found the alien with the heavy ordnance far to the south of the UFO.



He ended the threat it posed.



The exterior of the vessel was clear, and the squad prepared to enter. As AceDiamond took the hovertank in through the doors, a surprised Muton came down the lift. Obviously shocked to see an X-Com tank inside the lift, it was rendered unable to act.



Combined II stepped smartly in and blasted it.



Followed by Dekkarax, who moved to the first floor and spotted another alien.



As he shot it, he spotted a Celatid approaching from the south.



Higurashi moved up to cover him and shot the floating creature.



Sounds of panicked fire began to come from the top floor, the crew were obviously losing control. The team pressed the attack, and found one muton who had blasted a door off it's hinges.



Higurashi put it down.



As he did so, another unarmed alien ran out of a door on the second floor next to Schizzy, ignoring him, despite him shooting it in the side, it ran across the hall and into the waiting gun of Jack Lavish.



Who put it on the deck.



The further sounds of panic and wild shooting drew Higurashi to the last alien, which posed no threat as it blasted at the navigation console instead of the X-Com trooper.

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine



The seizure of this craft represents another blow to our enemy, however there is a danger that it was able to establish a base installation in the time before the Skyranger arrived. The Saudi army, with the assistance of local Arab nations, is cordoning off the area to contain any forces the aliens have dropped. With our assault on Mars only days away, X-Com cannot undertake a strike on an alien base if one has been established, but when the aliens lose their command and control, this base can easily be assaulted by local armed forces.

* OOC Note: The Blaster Launcher can miss occasionally, luckily they aimed at someone in a flying suit, if this shot had been aimed at someone on the ground it would probably have hit something behind them and still detonated, which would basically have wiped out the whole squad.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of soaring above the ground, filling aliens full of white hot plasma.

But on the reverse side, there's nothing quite as scary as hearing that ear-splitting whine from the "Rugby".

As Sun Tzu once said, "He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight. He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces. He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks. He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared. He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign. He will win with a flying suit and a heavy plasma."

The last bit I may have made up.

Took down a battleship today, we are ready for Cydonia.

And yet, something worries me, I have only just noticed, but Commander Birras has not spoken for months; is he merely engrossed in his work? Or was it the Cryssalids or Combined's death that sparked his silence; I sincerely hope the former is true, for if the horrors of this war can drive the best of us into silence, then, what hope is there for the rest of us?
Spoken with the rest of the lads, they have noticed too...

Mr. dekkarax has been noticing that our esteemed commander is not the eloquent and moraleboosting fellow he used to be. It matters not. As long as he still makes the sounds tactic decissions, and doesn't go fruitcake on us, and who could blame him for it, I won't worry too much. Say what you want, but I've never had the habit of getting close with higher ups. It was the wrong thing to do as a merc... Still, we are all together in this one, aren't we? Ah, I'm starting to ramble... Where's that STOP button?

This is the first time in days I've had time to write down my thoughts. Cydonia is only about a week away, so in between missions I've been training in power armor and been down at the range, just in case I have to be a little more personal to the aliens on Mars. I've also taken to wearing the armor while on missions, and while we took down the battleship I got my first opportunity to test out the wrist-mounted computer. It's a bit difficult dealing with the smaller screen but the resolution is sharp enough that there's no loss of recon or combat ability.

I know I'm ready for what will hopefully be the last mission of this war, I just hope the others are ready too. Commandar Birras' silence has...been unnerving to say the least. I only hope it's out of grim determination and not a psychotic breakdown.

Cmdr. Birras almost bought it today. One of the Rugby's, as comrade Sgt Evil coined it, missed him by a hair's breadth. Killed the Muton before he could loose another.

Small mercies that even these precision weapons can miss. Cmdr. Birras has since become reclusive. A sign of shellshock. Happens to the best of us, when Death looms so close you can almost feel his scythe nick you. There is no consoling a men like these, and the best we can do is leave it be and pray.

X-Com Incident Report, 25th July

In the early afternoon of the 25th, another scout vessel was detected looking for a base site in the Arctic.



It was pursued by an X-Com Firestorm but did not make landfall during our intercept window, and was eventually shot down over the North Sea, where it sank to the seabed, unrecoverable by ourselves or the alien enemy.

X-Com Incident Report, 25th July

As the day was almost over, yet another intercept came in. Another alien battleship, but on a harvesting mission.



Once more, interception of this vessel was impossible, but Skyranger 2 launched to shadow it and assault if it landed. It eventually did land in the eastern United States, and the assault began.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Ground Assault 9

Another mission fought at night against heavy alien forces. This would be a good dry run for the low light conditions of Mars. AceDiamond moved the hovertank out of the Skyranger and immediately came under fire. The heavy armour of the remote withstood the alien attack, and he located the shooter to the east.



The squad disembarked and shot the creature, and Doomsly McSlaughter noticed a second on the other side of the ramp.



It was also felled, and the squad continued their advance. AceDiamond began moving south, and spotted a Reaper in the shadows of the alien battleship.



He opened fire with the UCV's weapon, and the creature died.



Dispersing to the east, Preacher Saul threw a flare and illuminated an alien in a field to the southeast of the LZ. He opened fire and the enemy died.



Return fire came from the farmhouse nearby, and Vanilla Gorilla opened fire to silence it.



Scouting the lower level of the farmhouse, AceDiamond spotted another Floater.



It fled inside the building, hoping that the UCV would be unable to follow. It had not reckoned with the heavy support of Valiance, however, who set a Blaster Bomb to chase it inside.




A slight guidance malfunction caused the missile to explode in the farmhouse doorway, annihilating the wall and much of the interior structure, and coincidentally allowing AceDiamond to guide the hovertank through the rubble to locate and kill the fleeing alien.



The team then converged on the battleship. The snuffling and grunting from the elevator signalled the presence of a Reaper inside. CAPSLOCK FURY stepped smartly through the doorway and blasted it point blank in the head.



The team entered, with one squad on the top floor and one on the second. Aliens attempted to assault both simultaneously, but were gunned down as they burst through doorways. Vanilla Gorilla pursued a final alien who had given up the attack, and cornered it in a side room.



With nowhere left to hide, the alien was easy prey.



Whilst he was fighting, an alien blaster bomb was sent spiralling down the central lift shaft, it's anyone's guess who it was aimed at, it impacted one of the outer doors and exploded harmlessly, the shaft being well cleared by now. With the presence of alien heavy support revealed however, Doomsly McSlaughter and CAPSLOCK FURY caught aliens with Blaster Launchers at the south and north of the upper level respectively.





Their heavy weapons useless at close range, the aliens stood no chance.




With these threats ended, Gamebrain89 assaulted the vessel's bridge. A lone alien was inside.



After a short firefight, Gamebrain89 killed the creature.



Meanwhile, Longshot had discovered an alien trying to sneak up on Vanilla Gorilla.



The surprised creature was efficiently terminated.

Mission Debreifing, General McSwine



The presence of another alien battleship on a mission usually undertaken by scouts and harvesters indicates that our enemy is desperate. Our interdiction of harvesting missions must be taking a great toll on his logistic train, meaning that he has no choice but to send these massive vessels in the hope we cannot stop them. We have shown him that he is dead wrong.

X-Com Incident Report, 28th July

A moment of terror struck on the 28th. An alien battleship, apparently on a retaliatory strike against the USA facility.



However, rather than fly directly to the base, the craft began repeated overflights of the whole North American continent. Evidently our attempts to keep the base secret had worked, they didn't know where to hit, but were sending battleships to scout without being shot down.

After some hours, the vessel left, we do not yet know whether it was able to detect the base, but it appears that we are in a race against time, sooner or later the US base will be found, and it's garrison force is not strong enough to handle a full scale assault.

Like the last, this one began overflight of North America. The last had evidently failed to uncover the location of X-Com's facility there. However, the race against time was over. The aliens had lost.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the council, X-Com stands ready to launch our final strike on the alien invaders. A spacecraft capable of interplanetary jump has been completed, and transferred to the main X-Com facility, where it is undergoing final fitting.



In the seven months X-Com has been officially active, it has faced alien incursion on almost every continent and country.



We have met the invader in our skies, in the forest, desert, mountain, and tundra, and in our very cities.



The X-Com project has been a costly one. Millions per month have been consumed by it's maintenance and staffing costs, but the technology gathered by the project has meant vast leaps forward for this planet in energy and materials production, not to mention weapons development.



Now we stand on the brink of our final mission, the assault and destruction of the alien facility from which the invasion of Earth is being directed. It has been an honour to serve this council.

Final Mission Briefing, General McSwine

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the big one. As you all already know, our Avenger craft has arrived and is undergoing final loading and fuelling for the journey to Mars. In a few short hours, you will be the first men and women to set foot on another planet, and it is apt that that planet should be Mars, named for the ancient god of war, because war it is that takes you there. Our alien enemy has a facility on Mars from which he directs his forces, destruction of that facility will cripple this invasion once and for all, cutting off all forces from their strategic command, and leaving them easy to round up and destroy.

The stakes could not possibly be higher, we will only get one chance at this, once we have shown our enemy that we can strike at him directly, he will certainly resort to drastic measures, open attacks with weapons of mass destruction are almost certain to be the price of failure, but I know that you will not fail. You are the greatest fighting force this world has ever known, and I know that you will make our alien foe regret that he ever laid his covetous eyes on Earth.

Your mission will consist of two phases, an assault on the plains of Cydonia, and then underground into the heart of the alien base. The poor light reaching Mars from the sun will mean that fighting on the surface will be difficult, but you have all been on night operations before, and you know the drill. Weight limits will mean fewer flares than normal available, so make the best of them. We cannot know what will await in the interior, but review the information we have on assaulting alien bases on Earth in preparation anyway.

Dossiers have been provided with everything we know about the alien races involved in the invasion so far, study them carefully for any tactical advantage they may contain. Be aware however that it is entirely possible that the enemy has held forces in reserve that we do not know about.




















We have also provided the personnel files of the team participating in this assault. Ensure you are familiar with each other's capabilities and work to the best of your ability to support each other.












































Our assault begins as soon as the Avenger is ready. Take these few hours to sleep, and write any last journals or letters you wish, this will be the most dangerous mission ever undertaken by X-Com, and it is entirely possible that some of you will not return.

Personal Log: Kevin "Kevvers" Everton
I've made my last will and testament, just in case I don't make it back alive. Since I don't have any close relations or spouse, I put down X-COM veteran's fund. There isn't much left but to try to relax before the final push. We won't get a chance this good again. We are to make a precision strike wiping out the alien high command at its base on Mars before they realise our capabilities. At the moment they think they can beat us in a long war of attrition. If the mission is a bust, the alien high command will probably freak out and try something drastic. But it won't be, we are more than a match for them. This is it, do or die. I'm really glad I've been picked for this, no matter what happens.

I haven't had time to keep a detailed log, however, this will be my first and, maybe, only entry. I left all my possessions to my family, just like my sister had. I know that eventually we will defeat them, even if our mission fails. We have not been vanquished so far, though I fear that this will be much more difficult and some may die. I am not exceptionally good friends with anyone, but I still like everyone here. Higurashi, RootOfAllEvil, Looney, CAPSLOCK FURY, every single one of them/

They're my comrades and to protect them, I'd give my life. If I fall, then leave me where I die. Don't go back to me. Now, I have to go see the Priest for final comforts, just in case and visit Higurashi, to, at least, attempt talking about the final mission.

I need to relax.

It is with both excitement and nervousness that I write what may be my final log entry. The Avenger is currently sitting in the hangar of our main base, undergoing preparations for the mission to Cydonia. For seven long months I have waged war behind a camera and joystick, now I will be closer to the action than ever. I don't expect to have to leave the LZ, but if I do, I hope what training I was able to get will serve me well.

I know there is a chance some of us will not make it back. This truly would be tragic, given how, even if they haven't come to know me, I have come to know them. And I consider them the finest men and women that I ever fought with. I hope that, after we have won, (because I know we will win simply because we must) the world can know what it is we did, and that those who fought and died in the war for Humanity's freedom will be given the honors they deserve.

I do not wish to die on Mars, for I still have unfinished business with the ones who had sold out my country, but if I should fall on the plains of Cydonia, I can think of no better cause to have died for. I just hope in the end it will all be worth it. I think it will.
