I think that started because most Japanese animators didn't like working with black or dark grey hair so they used dark-blue instead, which is understandable. Of course some jackass then decided to use light/medium blue to make their character appear lighter and it spiraled from there.


No matter how powerful you are, the main villain will hand your ass to you (with a side order of humiliation) when they finally reveal themselves. You will promptly mope about being defeated for the first time before someone who is secretly in love with you tells you to be true to yourself or some crap. Then, when the final battle comes, your ass will be handed to you again, triggering a hallucination of said loved one repeating their little speach (or maybe an old man telling you to "get up, Rocky" while motivational plays in the background).
