I absolutely cannot stand Touhou project.

It bastardises mythology and turns all the monsters into little girls.

The plots are idiotic, generally consisting of the imbecilic villains comitting some ill-thought-out mischief, and our equally imbecilic heroes blundering around in the dark and beating up random lolis (who never die...how can you have meaningful conflict in a world where battles are non-lethal?)

The gameplay is pretty bare bones, too. There is only one enemy type (a goddamn fairy), no environmental obstacles, and the backgrounds stay the same throughout the level. For comparison, I've played some classic scrolling shooters on an arcade emulator, and all of them were superior to this.

And then there's the fanbase. Dear God the fanbase. I mean, I hate the bronies for shoving FiM in our faces all the time, but after watching bits of the show I can at least understand why they thought it was worth bringing to our attention; the show has decent production values at least. Touhou...does not. About the only thing decent to come out of the series is the music, which is good, but not superb.

Whew...glad I got THAT out of my system. Okay, rant over.

I didn't say I have a low opinion of the Escapist because of not having heard of Touhou. I have a growingly negative opinion of the Escapist because of these suspicions and assertions that nobody challenges. Actually, why are either of us here then, VanQQisH? Because I don't want to be among people who think like you have described. I do not like people, like you have described. And therefor I do not want to assume that the Escapist, is what you have described. Because, I like talking about video games, and I don't know where else to go.
I'm sorry, but this is often what happens when you share something that is personally important to you and ask for other people to listen to you, especially on the Internet. Not everybody is going to want to read a mile long post on a fandom that due to its sheer size is nearly impenetrable. And even if they do read it, not everybody is going to come out with positive feelings about it.

By presenting it as something you want other people to like, you are just setting yourself up for failure. Not everybody is going to like it, and those who don't are going to be offended you're operating under the assumption that "if they just know about it they'll love it!" That is why there are such negative feelings toward bronies. When people talk about it, they are convinced there is nobody in the world who could dislike it once they've "given it a shot." But that just isn't how people work. There are people out there who could sit through both seasons of MLP and come out totally unimpressed and unconvinced of its greatness. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

You can't be so personally attached that you take the negative criticisms as personal attacks against you. When you let yourself get that close to something, it will never end well for you.

I've played some of them. They didn't really keep me interested in playing. You dodge one bullet, you've dodged them all. The music is pretty good though.

Innovation, iteration. . . I just want to know if it has something to make it better than many 10 year old games, which it seems to look exactly like except with less enemies and more 'bullets' and with. . magical girls.
Well, chess hasn't changed significantly in the last few centuries. The various incarnations of Tetris haven't change significantly, either. When a genre has the simplicity of: "here are some things, dodge them," I don't really see how much the gameplay can be refined beyond giving the player interesting patterns of things to dodge.
We all stopped playing chess when we discovered 4X games. (I dunno why we don't call them 4E games, all the words start with E...)

The last time I played chess both my opponent and I ragequit because the game didn't take into account the exponential empire growth variables, and we couldn't strategically build improvements on the tiles to create a fiscally sound balance between our military spending and general populace's standard of living upkeep.

And the map was WAY too small. Seriously, no room for even a LITTLE fog of war. What is this, Civilization for Newborns? I thought we were playing a STRATEGY game!

This. And I have to call absolute bullshit on the whole "most famous series of games out of Japan"
Its stated that it's the most famous INDIE series somewhere in that wall of text.

Strangely now that I know what it is, I'm no longer interested in finding a copy to play now.

Personally I'm not interested in the games themselves. I got them but i don't play them that often. They're OK but i can usually find something better to play.

The music rocks though. I listen to it all the time. My favorite's septette for the dead princess.

I've finally cracked the code, the Escapist forums (cause sweeping statements are kewl) is /v/ with a thesaurus and some kind of complex about "objectively" proving things wrong.
You've been to a first time anal convention!? I didn't know they had such a thing...
They exist, but they're a pain in the arse to find.
Oh my dear sir, I see what you did there.

also; Captcha: heavens to betsy ... hmmm. that depends on what betsy prefers.

Why did this thread crash and burn so badly? I don't get it.

Anyway, this thread interested me enough to get a demo. It's strange that it was pretty difficult to find, because I'm pretty sure the OP was correct in saying it's a very popular series. It's one of the few that were commonly mentioned before indie games had their surge in popularity, I don't know why I never really looked into it before now.

Ah yes, Touhou. The Homestuck of the videogame world.

And guys: say what you want about it, it's not obscure.
In my neck of the woods (New England, United States of 'Merica) it sure is obscure. I could probably go around polling every single person in my entire state about whether they've heard of Touhou and I bet the overwhelming answers would be no. I'd never heard of it before Lilith's last thread about it, and I dated a girl who is absolutely obsessed with everything Japan-related for four years.

I wouldn't presume to say that it's obscure to the entire rest of the world just because I've never heard of it, but it's definitely not very popular around here at the very least.

Obligatory OT part: I believe I said this on the last Touhou related thread, though I might've ended up not posting that in the end, I can't remember. If I did post, it was probably fairly snide, and so for the sake of being less caustic this time around (after viciously attacking the last thread posted by the OP about first-person shooters) I'll simply say that I'm not a fan of bullet-hell games.

EDIT: Though I appreciate that the opening post of this thread didn't go out of its way to attack the general user-base of The Escapist.

OP, I despise bullet hell shooters, have no interest in your advertising and offensive comments about religion, and I hope this thread gets removed by the mods. Good day sir. Fall in a hole.

Hm... I think I underestimated its obscurity. It just seemed like one of those things that you hear around, like Homestuck. Guess that's a side effect of having near 15,000 posts... screws with your perspective.
I'd honestly say that the chance of hearing about Touhou increases in direct proportion to the number of gaming websites you frequent and the amount of time you spend there, just like Homestuck. I'd heard about it because there are a couple of items in LoL that are named after Touhou characters, but since bullet-hell shooters are definitely not my thing I never looked into them.

Well, I'm probably overstating how many people would not know about it. The majority may have never heard of it, but that doesn't mean the minority is small.

Just in my personal experience, I'd never heard of the series directly until Lilith made the Minecraft thread.

EDIT: Also what Vuliev said.

After watching a video or two it is definitely not my cup of tea.
I've never heard of Touhou ever since you brought it up in that minecraft thread and will now try to delete it from my memory. Have a nice day.
