Two games:

Longest Story I've played through, Shadow Hearts II.

Longest time to beat a game that I actually cared about, Final Fantasy VIII. First FF game I ever played, about the last one I ever beat. Took me approximatly 8 years as ironic as it sounds. I blame the fact that the game makes you rely on summons and magic so much and then the final bosses are like, 'GOD SAYS NO' to all of that and your forced to use your sword which does... 2000 damage even when its the final weapon.

Probably Baldur's Gate 2, which, along with its expansion, I played for around 300 hours before I got to the end. I've played other games longer, but it was because of a lack of an ending (multiplayer games) or because of lots of filler content (Morrowind, Fallout).
Oh yeh, Baldurs Gate 2 + ToB is probably the longest I've spent playing any single game, finished it so many times, completely, over and over

FFX.

120 hours in Blitzball alone, plus I did many of the side-quests and the like and hunted down most of the ultimate weapons. Suddenly I realized I was growing very tired of the game very quickly so I raced into Sin and finished the game.

GuildWars is probably pushing the 700 hour mark.

Offline, Mass Effect - four playthroughs with three different characters is probably around 160 hours at least.

Half-Life...every one of them. These games aren't for the simple minded folk such as myself.

I once played Resident Evil 4 all the way through in one sitting around the time I first got it. My butt hurt.

Pokèmon Silver. It is impossible to determine the number of hours I spent playing that.

Something made by Bioware, I'm sure.
Fallout 3's a contender but you can shorten the game substantially if you so please.

I'd say Fallout 3.

If I wanted to count the game I played longest, got the most time out of, i'd say Team Fortress 2. Around 200 Hours now.

I've got one Mass Effect file that's over 80 hours.

It goes without saying that my Shepard is beyond beastly at this point.

I can never get that far into Fallout 3, I always get sidetracked by other games, then I feel like I have to start over when I go back and the cycle just continues over and over.

Probably Jade Cocoon 2, you start out with the classical dungeons for each element, then after a specific plot point they make you do all 4 over again, but each one is like 5 times longer. But then again, they were compensating for the original jade cocoon, which i finished in one 4 hour sitting.

The longest game I've ever played is xenosaga, and yes I'm counting all 3 episodes. The first episode alone boasted over 80 hours of gameplay, and it god damn delivered.

To get to level 30 in Fallout 3, completing every quest from the main game, Broken Steel, and Point Lookout, took me 50 hours.

The most time I spent on finishing a games story line was when I played through Final Fantasy X......
To many hours that i will never get back :(
I tried to re-play it but could never be interested as I knew how it ended.

The most amount of time i spent playing a game when no playing the story line would have to be Fallout 3... the mods kept me coming back again and again

I would imagine World of Warcraft players to rank highly in this sort of topic. I recall having close to 100 days total played (that is, on my alt character which became my main).

Morrowind & oblivion, but I spent way more time modding than playing. Morrowwind used all my spare time for 2 years, & i'm still tempted to load it up again. Oblivion was less fun to play but more interesting to mod. I'm not a mod builder mind just trying to juggle huge numbers of mods & still have a playable game. The stalker games are my current time user. SOC more than Clear Sky, I'm probably going back to SOC with a collection of the really big mod packs sometime to have another go
