Two games:

Longest Story I've played through, Shadow Hearts II.

Longest time to beat a game that I actually cared about, Final Fantasy VIII. First FF game I ever played, about the last one I ever beat. Took me approximatly 8 years as ironic as it sounds. I blame the fact that the game makes you rely on summons and magic so much and then the final bosses are like, 'GOD SAYS NO' to all of that and your forced to use your sword which does... 2000 damage even when its the final weapon.
Oh my goodness! Me too! I've had that game for so long and I have had to restart it at least 5 times. The first time I didn't draw, the second time I got bored, the next time I leveled too much and the monsters leveled up faster than me. I promised my friend I would beat it and give it a chance because its his favorite game, but I don't know how I could ever get through it.

Longest game I ever played that wasn't multiplayer was probably Gotcha Force.

Fallout 3, mostly because I spent more time messing around and blowing things up than to finish the story.

FFXIII, 100+ hours, what can I say, I'm a completion whore.

Any Pokemon game really, I don't even care to know how much of my life I've sunk into those games, and how many times I've replayed them, if I had an actual number, I'd cry.

Singleplayer games: Fallout 3, Oblivion, Morrowind.

Multiplayer games: Starsiege, Tribes (played Starsiege for YEARS, back when I was a lot younger, was among my first games, and Tribes came shortly after)

MMOs: Asheron's Call (my first MMO), Star Wars Galaxies (second MMO), WoW...Auto Assault...Ultima Online...hmmm...think there is one or two more that I played for many months/years, but can't remember them

Mostly sandbox/open world games, except for WoW and Auto Assault

Back in the day I'd be able to spend 100+ hours on a game. As examples my first save files for FFX and XII were 160 and 130 hours respectively (although I really, really hate Final Fantasy X now...).

These days I can't seem to muster up much further than 45-50. I recently got to 40 hours in Fallout: New Vegas and I was just fed up with it by that stage, so I quickly rushed to the end. Maybe I'll go back to the file later on and do more sidequests, or, alternatively, just make a new character and do things differently.

That seems to happen a lot now, but strangely, only with WRPGs. Maybe I burn out on all of the optional stuff and then have little interest in going through the story. In Dragon Age I got to the lands meet but have yet to touch the game again since 2009. Similarly, in Oblivion I would finish a faction or two with a character but then have no interest in continuing with the main quest. On the other hand I spent 70 hours doing just the stories of Persona 3 and 4, and 80 hours getting the Platinum Trophy in FFXIII (though the last chapters of that game were probably the most drawn out I've played).

Steam tells me the longest is 835 hours on Football Manager 2009, although the vast majority of that can be chalked up to leaving it running in the background constantly for a long while.

Games this year... I have 45ish hours on Super Meat Boy, and probably like 35 on FFXIII, maybe the same again on Bayonetta. I think 45 hours is probably my limit for spending time on games if you don't include revisiting them, although I do have near to 200 on Pokemon Soul Silver. Of course, 40 hours+ seems like a pretty good investment for most £20 Steam games, and isn't terrible for £40 360 games. Certainly stacks up well against the cost of doing almost anything else. I haven't really played any "proper" JRPGS for a long while apart from Pokemon, so I dunno how long I'd spend playing a modern one.

Longest ever though (FM aside)? I couldn't say. If we're just including games with timers, since coming to University I've spent 12 days on Perfect Darks multiplayer, and then 5 or 6 days on MW2s split screen when we finally got a new console in the house. I know I've played through FFVII a bunch of times - my first playthrough with Gold Chocobo and Omnislash and everything hit the 100 hour limit, I think my second was probably 40 hours and subsequent ones clock around 25 before I get bored.

At this point, Final Fantasy XII, ranking in at 75 hours, however, I've played Final Fantasy VII twice, totalling about 100 hours, Final Fantasy VIII twice, also about 100 hours, and Final Fantasy IX a staggering THREE FUCKING TIMES at about 150, so technically speaking, the award goes to IX.

Pokemon Heart Gold is taking me an awful long time right now. I have to spend a lot of time grinding to level up my Pokemon. The ability to fight trainers again is crucial to these newer Pokemon games because you need all that extra experience. My file is over 130 hours old.

I've also spent a lot of time in Oblivion in the past. In one game I saved upwards of 400 times.
