I can mention one game. Warcraft III.

Not only does it include RTS, but custom map making, so you can make your own battlefields or something completely different (such as DoTa).

It's a game you can play for 10 years and still not get sick of, since custom games are always updated.

Age of Empires 2 w/ expansion.
Or, if you really like Star Wars, Galactic Battlegrounds. It's the same game, reskinned.

Most people at AoE's height were either in the C&C/RA, Starcraft or AoE camp. If you can't find a game out of those three groups, then you should just pick up a shooter. I still play AoE2 on occasions, fantastic for the nostalgia value.

i'm looking to buy a good RTS and i'm considering The Settlers 7, b/c it looks alright and i've heard good things about it. What are some other good RTS's out there for PC that i should also consider buying?
Settlers 7 is completely unplayable because of the broken DRM, stay away from it along with any other ubishit game.

If you want a decent RTS, i'd suggest any non-3d Command & Conquer game, any Age of Empires(or Mythology), Rise of Nations, Dawn of War with the first 2 expansion packs, Company of Heroes, any Blizzard RTS, Supreme Commander 1(the pc version, the 360 port sucks) and any Total War game except Empire.

As I've said to many a thread in the last week:

Rome - Total War

The battles are epic, and if you want just RTS, you can avoid the campaign entirely.

My RTS experience is pretty limited, but here's my two cents.

Starcraft is an obvious selection, but I can probably safely assume that you've already played that. If you haven't, then you can go down to pretty much any game shop and get the "battle chest" in exchange for an amusing song or a clever riddle.

I had a lot of fun with the first Dawn of War. With the expansions you can choose from something like ten races, and the resource system is certainly interesting.

Sins of a Solar Empire had a neat enough premise, but I found its interface to be about as user-friendly as a recently tumble-dried wolverine. I'm not saying don't get it, just be prepared to fumble with it for a while.

That's all I've got. Good hunting!

Depends on what flavor RTS you like.

Long, long "not finished in one sitting" type games?
-Civ 4 + BTS. Its civilization, so you already know whether you like it or not (turn based, mind you) and each game merely refines the previous.

-Sins of a Solar Empire. It can be short. It can be long. If you're the type who can draw in a web of meaning where the developers effectively left one out this game may be for you.

Tactical RTS's that stress your thought process more than how your micro and macro?
-Company of Heroes. I will say that the current game is broken as hell though. Between all the bugs and blatant balance issues I wouldn't play online till Relic pulls their shit together and fixes some stuff.

-DOW1. See above. Its COH in space with a stronger emphasis on quantities of units. It's imbalanced as hell but its more or less "playable."

Micro centric:
-SC. 'nuff said.

Macro centric:
-WC3. 'nuff said.

Honorable mentions:
-Red Alert 2. It's Westwood Studio's swan song, and arguably is widely considered the best of the entire franchise to date. Nothing really got run away OP in it like it did in later installments to the C+C franchise.

-Homeworld 1 + Homeworld Cataclysm. Relic's best game, and arguably one of the best RTS's in the whole genre. It drives me up a wall that we're not seeing a proper HW3 rather than "oh gee another warhammer 40k game!" Homeworld 2 does have some improvements over the predecessors but overall the unit balance leaves a lot to be desired.

-Age of Empires 2 and 3. They're both good. I happen to like three a lot more than 2.

Company of Heroes is really one of the best RTS's out there. Give it a shot. World War Two historically accurate (mostly) with little attention on base building, no resource mining, map control and good micro and macro is the name of the game.

The Dawn of War series is just kickass, no matter what angle you're looking from. The first game and its expansions are traditional RTS with base-building and so on (forget Soulstorm though, that expansion is pure and utter shit), and Dawn of War 2 is more of an RTT, with no base-building but a lot of other fun gameplay mechanics to make up for it.

Aside from the only marginally different factions, braindead ai, ctd's up the ass, "dlc" already on the disk, bad performance, lack of support, useless modding tools, horrible steam integration and an expansion pack being sold as full game is definitely the best CA product ever.

/sarcasm off

Of course I didn't like it, otherwise I wouldn't recommend against it.

hey no need to give me an attitude. I enjoy the game very much and only wanted your opinions regarding the game, none of your snide humor was needed.

Between There and There.
Country
The Wide, Brown One.
Grrrrrraaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr... Civilization is not RTS it's TURN BASED... Unless you count the Handheld release Civilization Revolutions, which was RTS (hint people, the RT stands for Real Time).

Anyway, my recommendations are:

For Grand Strategy RTS, go for something by Paradox. Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, etc.

For the more generic Build and Kill RTS, Relic's Dawn of War

For RTS without pissing about with building, Relic's Dawn of War II

For a hybrid of B/K and no building, Relic's Company of Heroes (changes from mission to mission).

For Turn Based strategy/logistics with real time battles, any of TCA's Total War series.
