What about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? That's a good one; funny, got some good moral issues in it, and the second season is just starting up in Japan.
Wait, what?
Really? Holy crap. I love you for this information.

Try Kuroshitsuji; chances are you won't like it (the fight scenes are just comical) but it occasionally goes extremely dark.
Also, if you can't tolerate any hinted yaoi, don't watch it. It's extremely good, however.

Baccano! is also quite the watch.

I really liked:

Wolfs' Rain (I think it's Wolfs, I remember seeing the title and thinking "That's not right")
Witch Hunter Robin (I know it was on YTV for a bit, but it's really good.)
Haibane Renmei.

The last there is a lot slower, and a tad more depressing.
I still rather liked it.

Un~! I'm watching Sengoku Basara and Axis Powers Hetalia right now, they're both really good! Basara is good if you like over the top fighting and ancient Japan XD and Hetalia is good if you like...historical...stuff? It's not ENTIRELY historical but its REALLY funny!

I just finished watching Best Student Council, Mushishi, Ghost Hunt, Ouran High School Host Club and xxxHolic. All were online, available via various outlets like Hulu, Funimation.com, Crunchyroll.com and Netflix. Every single one was utterly fantastic and awesome!

I'd highly recommend any of them, they were all tremendous fun. I'm trying to decide what to watch next and looking around for series that are available online since I'm watching my budget.

Getter Robo Armageddon
Mazinkaiser
Amon: Apocolypse of Devilman
Devilman OVA

Armageddon is an anime which borrows heavily from several of the amazing Getter Robo mangas and manages to do a good job.

Mazinkaiser Is pretty much a remake of the original Mazinger Z anime (well, other than the newer remake that is currently airing, but after two minutes of it I can definitely say I think Mazinkaiser is the more faithful one). The middle episodes just retell some of the stories from the classic 70s manga, but they present it well enough that it isn't dated at all. The robot itself is very high powered, but still alot more reasonable than some of the others I've seen.

Apocolypse of Devilman is an OVA which acts as a sort of sidestory to the Devilman manga. It's very good, starts off gory and manages to maintain it.

The Devilman OVAs are anime versions made in the 80s(as opposed to the 70s series)of the manga Devilman. There are only two episodes, but they are well worth watching.

Dragon Ball Kai (not DBZ)

Basically its a remake of DBZ but with all of the shit taken out of it (the endless charging ect) in short I think they cut out about 100 episodes from the original slimming it down to the best of the best.

So far there are only 6 episodes out, and I think its worth a look at least.

Now the rest of the show is not as polished as the new intro, just keep that in mind.

Hehe, I'm getting ideas on "what to watch...eventually" from this too.

Rozen Maiden is my recommendation. It's a really good mix of themes. Azumanga would be the second series I'd recommend. It's...grown on me, I can't say I fully understood it at first.

>_< I need to get around to finishing Code Geass, and Cowboy Bebop...

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is my Horror/Suspense pick and if you can avoid spoilers will mess with your head.

Of those listed above the standouts for me are Elfen Lied and Black Lagoon.

Planetes is a very good hard scifi (aka no "magic" tech) about a team of astronauts that clean up orbital debris.

For something that is both good and you can watch with your girlfriend Aishiteruze Baby is about a teenage pretty boy raising his 5 year old cousin, very touching and funny.

You liked Evangelion? I personally want it burned and covered in salt!

The guy character NEVER CHANGEES he's always whiny and lame, NEVER CHANGING...the girl (asuka) Always whiny! Ahh the boys better then me wahhh. SHUT UP GIRL YOU ARE WHINY! The characters never developed because they never changed. It sucked, in my honest opinion.

However, I did like Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist....MUCH better character devekopment and story lines, etc.

If you haven't seen Code Geass, you must. I know others have brought it up, but I will literally go to the effort of not mentioning all the other good stuff I've seen just in case I make this one series stand out that little bit more than the others people have mentioned. That's how good it is. The strategy, the characters (are by CLAMP, and they're incredible at it), the whole first season... worth watching, seriously. Even the less good parts of this anime beat most other anime series in their entirety.

Finishing up Initial D Fourth Stage this weekend, so I'm looking for more good stuff.

What I consider good:

Limited-run (no 300+ episode cookie cutter anime... unless it's just unbelievably good)
Intelligent (I don't want the anime equivalent of Spongebob Squarepants)
Overarching story (Don't want anything that each episode is it's own separate storyline)
Mature (not tentacle mature, but then again, a tentacle every now and then can't hurt)

Basically anything that would appeal to an audience older than 21.

I prefer fansub stuff, but can tolerate US licensed stuff if it meets above critera and has original Japanese audio with subtitles.

What I've seen and enjoyed.

Project A-ko
Dominion Tank Police
Fist of the North Star
Ghost in the Shell
Serial Experiments: Lain
Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Full Metal Alchemist
Akira
Urotsukidoji
La Blue Girl
Cool Devices
Hellsing
Record of Lodoss War
Robotech/Macross
Initial D
Chobits
Love Hina
Wangan Midnight

I'm sure there's more, just don't recall the names right now.

And please, no Naruto or DBZ.
tenjoe tenge and air gear are good animes . tenjoe tenge is a mature anime that has great action, fanservice, and animation. it opening theme is kickass. it is slow pace especially the manga. air gear is skating action anime. it is aimed at 13 and up age group . it is really good. once you get into it is very enjoyable. air gear is good change of pace . i have not any other anime that has skaters that fight.

Holy cow, SE:L [http://myanimelist.net/anime/339/Serial_Experiments_Lain]? I really liked that anime! That was my first one before venturing completely into the anime world.

Yoshitoshi ABe, which was the original creator of SE:L, also created another anime set in another universe. This ohter anime is now my favorite, and it made Yoshitoshi ABe my favorite guy within the anime buissness. I'm talking about Haibane Renmei [http://myanimelist.net/anime/387/Haibane_Renmei].

If you enjoyed SE:L, you'll most definitely love Haibane Renmei.

I tend to stick to anime that's not shounen (Japanese, meaning "kid/boy") like dragonball/naruto and so on. I like to watch anime's that relies on emotions and such. Here's a list of what I watched after I started with SE:L and Haibane Renmei:

Dennou Coil [http://myanimelist.net/anime/2164/Dennou_Coil]
Noein - To your other self [http://myanimelist.net/anime/584/Noein_-_Mou_Hitori_no_Kimi_e]
Kamichu! [http://myanimelist.net/anime/489/Kamichu!]
Air TV [http://myanimelist.net/anime/101/Air]
sola [http://myanimelist.net/anime/1965/sola]
Kanon 2006 [http://myanimelist.net/anime/1530/Kanon_(2006)]
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya [http://myanimelist.net/anime/849/The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya]
Lucky star [http://myanimelist.net/anime/1887/Lucky_%E2%98%86_Star]
Saikano [http://myanimelist.net/anime/529/Saikano]

By the way, some people like Elfen Lied [http://myanimelist.net/anime/226/Elfen_Lied] and such, but I preferred Saikano better. It's basically the same idea.

Holy cow. Well welcome to the Escapist! I hope you stay, because you have some good explanations there.
Thanks for the welcome, and I and quite enthusiastic about my anime's thus the explanations.
I'm also in here pulling other anime's to watch myself as 729.6h is not enough time spent watching them. If only I didn't have to work I could catch up in my progress.

Also, the second season of The Melancholy ofHaruhi Suzumiya; is it the web streamed release [http://myanimelist.net/anime/5118/The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi-chan_Suzumiya] or another actual season?
EDIT: Oh wow, it IS another season entitled "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya"

I was watching Denno Coil when DB was releasing it, but they never did episode three so I'm going to have to find another source. Is had interesting concepts: Imagine user interface so streamlined you could make a map pop up like a window in your hands then grab it and move with it as you follow your route. but, of course, no computer based interface is free of bugs...

FLCL: Greatest piece of media EVER!
Code Geass: Pretty much Death Note meets V For Vendetta, but better then the two combined
One Piece: A long 300+ shounen anime series that's a bit campy, but so loveable and the climatic fights I consider to be unbelieveably incredible
Any Hayao Miyazaki films: Epic and mejestic, I actually consider Princess Mononoke to be the best movie ever.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: A great high school fantasy/comedy

Holy crap! How did I forget Miyazaki films!?

Oh right, I was listing series-not moviefilms.
Well, since Miyazaki's been accounted for, I'll add in Paprika [http://myanimelist.net/anime/1943/Paprika] It has a very strong feel alike to Paranoia agent. Real and unreal are loosely defined which segments that leave you wondering weather it actually happened or was it a characters dream. Great soundtrack, characters with split personalities, multiple plot-lines that get pulled in together.

To summarize: Man created technology advanced far enough to allow a person to share a dream with another consciously, and when used for psycho-therapy is very effective. But reality and the 'dream world' lose the fine line that sits between then when a prototype for one of these machines goes missing.

Ahh, FLCL, Furi Kuri(subtitled), Fooly Cooly(dub'd).
How could six episodes of an OVA that spawned a manga (That's right, the OVA was made first and a manga came after) also hold, what was it, 3 official sound tracks?

Speaking of, Cowboy Bebop has 7 Official sound tracks.
