As most of you have probably seen (considering how the Escapist is practically painted with ads for it), Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online has adopted a model similar to that used by their other hit MMO, Dungeons and Dragons Online.

How many of you plan on playing? Are you playing alone, or are you starting out with friends? What race are you fighting for?

And last of all, do you already have a Fellowship planned? If not, maybe we should get an Escapist group together and beat back the forces of Sauron.

I'm not really sure if I should or not, my computer at home sucks so if I did play it it would be here at school, and I have been wanting a free to play mmo for some time. Probably won't even be able to install it without permission from the teacher.

Ehh, I might but it would take forever to download with my crappy internet.

Anyone who's played it can tell me if it's worth spending 3 days downloading it? :p

If your internet's that bad, probably not. I imagine it might cause some issues.

I might have a look at this then, I don't think the system reqs are too high.

I'd like to know how it works. Is it a system like Runescape, where a certain amount of content is available for free with the rest requiring a costly membership, or is it entirely free, but with microtransactions involved to obtain some items?

Do you know if it's a global thing, or is it just America? If it's available in the UK then I'll definitely give it a go.

I love the Lord of the Rings, and MMOs, but out of curiosity, is the game GOOD? I haven't seen much of it so I wouldn't know. If so, then I would easily play it.

Some items/features require a $15/month subscription, but the vast majority of non-expansion content is free or purchasable through microtrans.

I'm pretty sure it's global, considering how LotRO has a worldwide playerbase. Not sure though.

I played the actual game for a few months, and it was enjoyable. They've made a lot of improvements apparently to the dungeon system (adding a summoning stone-like apparatus for quick gathering), and done some balance tweaks, so I'm not so sure about the balance. But the game itself is a lot of fun, and it's the one MMO I've played where quest text was actually interesting.

Plus, you can get titles and housing, and how is that not awesome?

Incidentally, 1.75 hours until the download is complete for me.

The North American servers are Free To Play now, and you can access them via the client you get from lotro.com. If you go this route, Elendilmir is generally considered the more Euro friendly server population wise (though the bigger servers are all populated nearly around the clock anyway).

I've heard the Euro version, run by CodeMasters, has had it's Free To Play launch slightly delayed though I don't know by how much.

You can do all the regions of the Shire, Ered Luin, and some other place, and the level cap is the same as it is for the subscribers.

I don't know... I tried DDO and the community came off really hostile, especially when I asked how to do something. Even if it's free, playing with those guys just wasn't fun. It's a no from me.

Christ, this is going to take me days to download. My internet would have to slow down right when I start a 7gb download.

definitely rolling a Dwarven Guardian when I start though. Why you'd want to play anything but a tank as a Dwarf is beyond me.
