I don't think it's occured to him yet that he has plenty of games old and new on the market he could have taken inspiration for a new film setting which he could have used proper 3d filming equipment to produce so the film looks good. Instead of just potentially wasting money making his old movies not filmed with this equipment look terrible.

Sometimes I've got to wonder if he is stuck in some kind of Time loop when it comes to actual film ideas.

Wait... What? So, we're taking 2D movies, some of which are over 30 years old, and converting them way after the fact to 3D. That doesn't fucking work! At least not well...

The opening of A New Hope would look cool in 3D, but that's not really a good enough reason. Though did you expect him NOT to do them in 3D? It didn't really come as a surprise.

WOW it looks like the sucky-ness is coming RIGHT AT ME!
If they manage to give Hayden Christiansen's performance any Depth it'll be a miracle.
Very, very nice! I applaud your humor. I should have seen that pun coming. I actually lol'd.

OT: I love star wars and I was going to buy all six on DVD, but haven't gotten around to it yet. However, at this point in time I do not want to waste a hard earned dollar so that Lucas can continue to make his movies look worse. Seriously, does anyone agree with me that the original trilogy looks even worse when you insert CG bar singers at Jabba's palace, etc.? Anyways, enough of my ranting. I'm pissed and I refuse to see them for the spectacle. Then again I didn't see Avatar in 3D and I thought it sucked too.

Why do people care?

I've had my fun with the movies already and so have everyone else. If Lucas wants to do weird shit to his property I say we let him.

I wouldn't mind experiencing the trench run in 3D.

But I'm guessing they're redoing Episodes 1-3... which is just unecessary.

Lucas Re-Releasing Star Wars Movies in 3D

The Star Wars movies are heading back to theaters, this time with a whole extra dimension.

George Lucas plans to re-release all six of the Star Wars [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Harrison-Ford/dp/B001EN71DG/ref=sr_1_3?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285766652&sr=8-3] movies in 3D. The movies will be tackled in episode order, with The Phantom Menace [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-Phantom-Widescreen/dp/B00003CX5P/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_1] expected to hit screens sometime in 2012.
They'll be just in time for the Mayan New Cycle thing. Everyone knows movies do best in the ancient civilization holiday season.

Well, I suppose one can't blame a one or two hit wonder for sticking with the only thing that worked, and I don't hate the prequels or think the altering of a half second exchange between a smugler and bounty hunter ruined the rest of the two and a half hours. Still, not shot for 3D = bad translation to 3D. I fully expect these kind of transfers as 3D tech goes mainstream, but it is REALLY too early to convert these films.

A you gotta wonder why so fast this time. It took forever for both DVD and Blu Rays of the movies (heck we're a year away from blu ray) so why jump this bandwagon now?

This is the kind of news that can leave a Star Wars fan conflicted.
I laughed a bit at that. Based on the comments in this thread, I'd say no one is conflicted.

Why are people so jaded about Star Wars nowadays? (That's a rhetoric question by the way, don't answer it)

If I have money to spare in 2012 I'm totally watching it. It's Star Wars guys! In theaters! In 3D! Why are people so quick to write this off? Because Greedo shot first? Sure that sucks, but there is no talk of poking around in more scenes, it's just about giving them the 3D treatment, don't assume otherwise until we know for sure.

Besides. Think of the kids, think of how many new Star Wars fans could potentially be born out of this. How could that possibly be a bad thing.

Ok really this is not needed we want something cool and new...But on the other hand Star Wars on the big screen again is not a bad thing...especilly the old ones tacked on 3d or not...
There are a load of old films I would like to rewatch on the big screen, not sure about others but cineworld has got back to the future, but that has nothing new to it.

This is James Cameron's fault.
Hardly. I'm pretty dang sure that Lucas has been eager to get the films translated to 3D since well before the current 3D madness got started. I can recall a story from even before Monsters vs. Aliens came out which stated he was eager to pull this off, he's just been waiting till the conditions are right.
