You will love this:

MapOfMetal.com [http://mapofmetal.com]

edited for: You don't want to miss it. Seriously.

see that smaller black box down there? the 4 lines are tracks that you can listen to in full length. Most genres have much more songs to them, though - I estimate the amount of music sums up to at least 6 hours, more like half a day.

That website has just made me bring a list the next time I visit the local library. On it:
Botch, Lamb of God, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah

My interest in metal goes as far as 80's hair metal. Most modern metal just sounds like noise to me I'm afraid.

Also, endow means giving something as in literally giving something from one person to another.
i do mean literally give me metal songs and bands...and 80s hair metal doesnt belong here
No you don't mean that at all. You mean tell you about songs and bands. I'd have to go out and find a band and hand them over to you in order to endow you with a band.

And yes it's been made clear that glam metal like Motley Crue, and Ozzy Osbourne isn't welcome here already.
giving "on the internet" means posting last time i checked, thank you for correcting me though...and i like ozzy, it just doesnt belong in here im afraid.
Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were two of the bands that created heavy metal.

The Ramones sound like a bubblegum pop group compared to punk bands like The Dead Kennedys and Lars Frederikson and The Bastards. Doesn't mean they're not punk.

Yeah, but you don't now have or own the bands or songs, so they weren't endowed to you. You know them.
the ramones song "wart hog" was more punk than dead kennedys and that guy from rancid combined.

this is the most punk things got before chumbawamba/butthole surfers

I love me some industrial metal...though the people in this thread wouldn't consider it metal.

On a side note, Glam Metal is metal. It has cool guitar solos, cool guitar riffs, and it can be awesome.

I was gonna post the Map of Metal myself, but I was beaten to the punch...

Gotta love the occasional bit of "I don't like that particular style, therefore it isn't metal"...
Clarification: Glam Rock is metal, Hardcore is metal, and the old genre colloquially known as "heavy metal" (epitomized to some, including me, by Iron Maiden) is definitely fucking metal.
Even Iniquity is metal... they're just crappy metal. :p

.
**edit**
One thing I forgot to mention: there is also man who epitomizes everything that metal should mean. That man is Lemmy Kilmister. As Dave Grohl once said in an interview for a documentary:
"Fuck Keith Richards, fuck all those dudes who survived the sixties flyin' around on Lear jets, living up their gunslinger reputation as they fuck supermodels in the most expensive hotel in Paris. Y'know what Lemmy's doin'? Lemmy's probably drinkin' Jack&coke and writin' another record."

Insulting Iniquity the death metal band, and yet claiming Glam Rock and Hardcore is metal.

How ironic and clueless.
not very good at identifying irony, are ya?

I like the older melodic death styles. Bands like Dark Tranquility, In Flames and At The Gates. Slaughter of the Soul by At The Gates is perhaps the best and most mighty example of this genre.

I actually got into metal mainly because most of my friends were listening to Black Metal, stuff like Burzum and Mayhem etc. While I liked that stuff the wankiness of the performers often annoyed me, and I found myself gravitating towards the more melodic styles.

Is that your best argument? Picking out on something unrelated? Well done....
Dude, my insulting Iniquity was meant to be self-deprecating irony reinforcing my earlier point about individual tastes not defining what is and is not metal. That is the irony I was referring to. I'm sorry you apparently didn't catch that.
I actually don't give a damn what you personally define as metal, and I have no interest in arguing with you (ie. nothing I said was meant as an argument). History speaks for itself.

I have never found a metal band I truly like besides System of a Down...do they even count?

Also, I am open, please suggest a metal band.

Fyi, i don't like death, black, screamo metal.
