Not sure if this was done in the first two games, but I would like to see spells level up with you. For me to get a fireball spell at level 3, and at level...10 lets say, it is actually useful still.

I'd have to say integrate Midas' Magic into it somehow, if not directly then indirectly. (probably one of my favorite magic mods ever that was compatible without the DLCs)

Waaaaay more mana at later levels. If im an Arch Mage I should be able to cast a fireball bigger than the planet if I want too.

the return of the lock spell would be useful seeing as NPCs are able to go through doors etc.

I'd like Oblivions style spell selection and gameplay with Morrowind spells. Also some cool quests to get unique spells e.g. Fingers of the Mountain, except not crap and leveled

Oh and levitate!!!!!!!! CHYES

There have been a few topics about WHAT DO YOU WANT IN ES5:SKYRIM? But I'd like to focus purely on the intricacies of the magic system. Any Elder Scrolls mage can tell you of the sheer depth and flexibility that magic offers.

I know that most of these things could be done in mods, and probably even have been done in mods for Oblivion, actually. But still...What are some changes to the magic system that you would like built-in by default?

1. DEAR GOD, DON'T MAKE US GO THROUGH A BUNCH OF QUESTS IN DIFFERENT TOWNS OR BUY A DLC TO ACCESS SPELL CREATION AND ENCHANTMENT! SERIOUSLY, THAT PISSED ME OFF WITH MY DOZENS OF MAGE CHARACTERS!

I must have found J'skar at least 50 times! Even my warriors and rogues have to do this shit just to make healing spells.

3. Slowly recharging enchantments, but not as slow as Morrowind, so that warriors don't need Mysticism or Soul Trap enchanted weapons to recharge their stuff.

6. Total removal or fixing of the game-breaking effects like Reflect Damage or Chameleon. Do like the Shield effect, and make those effects cap at 85% or something similar.

7. Once a day powers that aren't shit. Seriously. I'm giving up some permanant stat bonuses here, give me something good. Not shit like "The Serpent".
A good list overall, but I'm with you 100% on these. Some spells are just way too game-breakingly overpowered (chameleon, paralyze, reflect damage). I too love the Shield effect, as it allowed me to have a well-armored character wearing only simple shirts, pants, and shoes. A plus because I didn't like the look of most of Oblivion's armors.

As long as being a vampire actually has some benefits next time I'll be happy. I never had any problems with Oblivion's magic, except that it looked like shit.

I hope for pure awesomeness in Skyrim. Imagine leaves and grass flying through the air after a spell impact. Patches of grass on fire, grass blowing in the shockwave of a passing spell, trees getting engulfed in flame after a particularily powerful stray fireball...

It's good to dream.

I never played a mage for long.

BECAUSE MAGIC WAS SO DAMN USELESS COMPARED TO MELEE.
Bethesda need to make severe adjustments to make it a decent alternative to melee combat.

My own suggestion would be a chosen school of magic with set spells that increase in magnitude as you become more skilled in that school, along with new spells learnt, but I really don't want to have to learn 10 different types of the exact same spell just because of an increase in damage.

And more morrowind spells and ease of enchanting and spellmaking.

I just want the spells to look better, the only reason I never played a magician character was because the spells looked so god awful.

Curse me for having it on the 360! (100% completed, of course.) Ill get Tes5 on the PC and hope for such mods. I know Morrowind had a lot, but for Oblivion I never found alot, and my old sources required me to pay 5$ a week for Oblivion mods. I gave them a certain finger. With respect of course.
Go to TESNexus, probably the best site for Oblivion mods there is. And it's free!

And get a gaming PC. Mods improve the game so much! There's a lot of games that have great mods, actually, but especially the TES games (and FO3, probably FNV as well).
I'm gonna have to complete your statement that Half-Life 2 and TES are the most modded - and most easily modded - games in existence.

I own them both and have probably spent more time playing mods than I have playing the actual games. Not that I never finished them or something, there are just so many goddamn mods!

We need the viability and explsiveness of Oblivion magic combined with the variety, freedom and RPG-ness of Morrowind's.

Not really anything to do with magic, but I wish the AI was better. I am tired of accidentally killing an ally every time I have NPCs with me because I shoot a lightning spell or something at an enemy and the ally NPC runs in the way. All of a sudden I get everyone turning on me and I get guards trying to arrest me from all over the country side.

I call for the return of Mark & Recall spells.

That, was something that was usefull. And for the housedecorating geek like me, a lock spell would be cool too. I'm weird allright? :p
Since NPCs can't pick locks, and probably won't in Skyrim, either...You are weird with Lock spells.

But with house decorating, nah.

I always put weapons that have outlived their usefulness in special places. You look pretty on that table, shitty mage's staff I got from the guild at level 5.
Totally agree with the post of Ruwrak, and by the way NPC can pick locks and do so (at least they could in Morrowind). Really all the spells you truly needed as a mage where summon ancestoral ghost, lock, levitation and mark/recall. (Summon ancestoral ghost gives you infinte manna if you use the Bretonian/Antroch exploit, and lock/levitation grands you safe places to do so even during fights)

I definitly want levitation again, that is really going to be a decision maker (I'm not buying it if it doesn't have levitation), but I would like it to be a flying spell instead of a walking on air spell. I always had trouble to use levitation in combat, and I feel that would be easier to do if you would actually fly.

Concerning the original post, I don't know about Oblivion, but in Morrowind you could summon eight creatures in one spell. True those would be 8 different creatures, but eight creatures nonetheless. Also you could summon several creatures of the same type, if you would create the same spell several times. (I would also do summon storm antroch1, summon storm antroch2, summon storm antrochn. This allowed me to have n storm antrochs fighting for me at the same time)

1) I want levitation back where you can actually walk across the sky.

2) I would like weapons that are enchanted to recharge ON THEIR OWN when not in battle. I did NOT like burning soul gems to charge them up. They don't exactly replenish in the world easily.

3) I would like a night-vision that looked like daytime when in use except that you can see the stars at night or it might be slightly paler in color than true daytime. No more monochrome, plz.

4) And I would DESPERATELY like to make my own magic items that are AT LEAST as powerful as the ones the game gives you! No more 10% for me but I can have an artifact that offers 30% in things I don't want.

5) An AI that doesn't praise you one minute and insult you the next. Let it remember if you did a favor for them past 5 seconds. Bleh.

6) Let us have horses with the controls from Red Dead Redemption! <3

7) Let us increase the bonuses of items we have already enchanted once. (When you like your look...)

8) More voice actors. Let there be variety to the guards, the shopkeepers, the lizardmen, and the cats.

9) And let us actually manage to save some people during the quests more than 10% of the time. They shouldn't all be dead and the original cause lost before you even get there.

And then some of the ones the OP mentioned. Good points all.

I agree with everything except for 4 and 5. I hated Morrowind and want nothing to do with it, and Im not sure how willpower affecting magic cost would be helpful.

I would give up all of the magic improvements, and even the prettiness, to have a world as large as Daggerfall's one. Anyone remember Daggerfall? Boring, bland, buggy...Kinda bad, really. Even for its time.
But the world... That was a world you could get lost in.

...Sorry, I know you want magic, I'll get back on track...

I agree with summons- what kind of necromancer/conjurer makes a demon summon spell that lasts for a minute? That's just ridiculous. Permanent is the way to go. It's not strictly magic, but make the companion A.I better so you don't have to maneuver yourself awkwardly behind the summons to protect yourself- they should do it for me!

Oh! And everything from Midas Magic. Especially astral combat, that made me feel like a real mage- as if a god, even.

I want proper metal, glowing, jeweled mage staves, not the damn sticks they used in Oblivion.

Basically make it morrowind, but with oblivion's engine, combat, and magic. I want more than three kinds of weapons to use
I do miss using a spear. It seems at times that I'm the only one who likes the spear (or other pole arm) as a weapon in such games. My first play of Morrowind was as a spear wielding Argonian warrior and it was probably my favorite experience with the series.

Until I realized that, thanks to my lizard feet and head I was at an eternal disadvantage in terms of armor value.
dude so true the spear was wicked legit
