Uhm you guys do realise a bone marrow transplant is one of the most painful operations that can be performed on a patient ...
OT: this does sound like a useful advance for science if they can synthasise the HIV immuse genes and if they can find a much more enjoyable way of delievering it
That's my thought exactly. I'm hoping that they're working on a way to refine and duplicate the gene that makes people immune to HIV or something along those lines. I'm no scientist but it sounds possible in my head. Given enough funding and support of course.

That's cool they're developing a cure although i'm not wild about the use of viruses to deliver it.

The only problem is that Disease and germs evolve and adapt, though any respite is welcome really.

This could be potentially ground breaking the only issue I see right now is that it is going to be slow progress unless more Stem Cell research treatment and research is allowed, otherwise you have to find someone naturally HIV immune, convince them to give Bone marrow transplants and even then supply won't meet the demand for a quick answer it will take years.

Sorry to ever be the pessimist but thought I should post my thoughts.

If this is as true as it sounds... WOOHOO! We might be on the right path to finally getting rid of HIV and AIDS. If not, well it still sounds like they might have gotten closer. All in all good news in my opinion.

well i'm one those nutjobs that already knew that they had the cure for AIDs but wanted to make money off of the lifetime of pills people have to get in order to live so this only prove my thoughts ... kinda

...wait...there are people with a natural immunity to HIV? And they are only now thinking they can use bone marrow transplants to cure the disease? Okay, I know these people devoted their entire lives to researching the disease and finding a cure and all but COME ON!!! That is so simple.

I'm probably underthinking this or something, but the fact that such a simple treatment took this long for someone to actually do surprises me.

I have to call bull**** on this one. If this was a confirmed thing it would be everywhere. This is very similar to the scientists who claimed that they had turned human skin cells into pure stem cells and it turned out to be a hoax. I would also like to point out the MASSIVE error in their thinking. You cannot replace all of the bone marrow, and the bone marrow is just AIDS RESISTANT. By their thinking, for any disease of the blood all you would have to do was give them a marrow transplant, but that does not work. The bloodstream is already full of the AIDS virus so any marrow added would just be infected by it. Sorry to crush all you optimists out there, but this just does not add up.

I've heard of this a while ago. Very interesting, though I imagine it's far too expensive to be used as a practical means of curing HIV.

I'm not a M.E. or a brilliant Biologist but I believe that the bone marrow has to be found compatible with the person recieving it, the odd's on finding a compatible bone marrow for a AID's patient that just happens to be HIV immune is minimal, so yeah I think it was just good timing more than actively looking for a cure and discovering it.

I doubt they could keep HIV immune Bone Marrow exclusive to AID's patients either because of the supply and demand, if someone needs a transplant they can't really tell them tough they are saving up what they have for someone else who might come along so they can do research can they?

I read up on the gene that makes people immune, and it's very rare. And I believe both parents have to have it for the gene to be passed on, making it even rarer. Add to that rarity the fact that the blood types between the doner and the recipient have to be the same and the chances get even slimmer. =/

I don't think you can be immune to HIV.

I hope it's true, though.
Fun fact apparently %10 of europeans are HIV immune, due to (supposeidly) that aids is somehow similar to the black death, weird eh?

Sweet.

Yeah. That's all I have to say. Sweet.

Didn't we already cure AIDS? Maybe not . . .
