I recently watched the first series of Black lagoon, can't say if you'd like it but I certainly did, you might want to give it a look.
Also Hayao Miyazaki's films are breath-taking.

i love lucky star. kinda meant for girls but i found it hilarious.
also is the battle royale manga any good?

and as for your question - try Code Geass, its brilliant, quite a good plot and some good twists.
the manga was quite graphic, it was an 18+ XD i only got to read it because my cousin had it
it was pretty good though, just not for people who dont like the odd spot of blood :p

*very deep voice*-There is only one group with more power then the staff it is the STUDENT COUNCIL
(i think all start watching it)
To OP Watch Trigun it takes place on a planet called Gunsmoke like the T.V show
"At Miyagami High School there are a group of beautiful maidens with more power than staff members
Miyagami Gakuen Maximum Authority Holders Highest Level Student Council
Also known as...

Gokujou Student Council!"

hehe couldnt help it had to get the exact translation thingie
i watch the subbed version though, so it might not be 100% accurate
no i was watching subed on youtube i just wanted to shorten it
oh BTW how many episodes we talking about here and how many on youtube if you watch them there?
there should be 26 episodes, and my cousin downloaded it ages ago and gave it me, so i have no idea where you'd get it from :p so i dont know if its on youtube

Code Geass was a really good one, though it was a bit too short for me. Also I love Rurouni Kenshin, hence my avatar.

I want to reccomend Gurren lagann why yes it's giant robots but who doesn't like watching giant robots fight for the sake of humanity not having to live underground also the animation is lovely and the characters are hilarious but wonderful structured even though I'm sure the biggest hook of the series is yoko's eeny weenie bikini and giant breasts

WARNING! IDEALISTIC VIEW AHEAD - MAY OR MAY NOT APPEAL TO YOU

I tend to steer away from the Japanimes and manga (hur hur mangay) myself because something about the ridiculously characterized cast of catgirls Japanese words and generally over-complicated storylines doesn't appeal to me. Now, this isn't because I don't have mental capacity to take this all in- I read Microsoft Paint Adventures ffs- It's just that I think a story doesn't need to have this. Anime, for me, ends up going "Look at me, I'm a deep story with moving characters and an incredible universe," but all it ends up being is something with big eyes, lots of grunting, high voiced anamorphic children doing everything children shouldn't do. I just see it collapsing on itself, becoming so ridiculous it dies. Also, the CUTENESS. What is it with this cuteness?
Also, the fanbase just gets on my nerves(I don't HATE you if you read amines and magmas)- sure, there are masterpiece types out there (yeah yeah I just don't like them) and people are bound to go crazy over them, except that everyone I know who likes aminals/magnets is a bit nuts. Whenever I see people saying things like "Gokujou Seitokai" and "Makai Senki Disgaea" I just... I don't know. It just turns me off. When I catch myself saying things like that I look around to see if I'm Japanese yet.

[/artistic rant]
You got the wrong word there methinks. That right there be cynicism not idealism.

I would copy/paste "Clannad" a thousand times, but I don't want to get banned.
So yeah. Clannad.
Funny you should say that, my mate said the only possible way you can hack the mundane anime which is clannad is if your stuck in a hospital bed for 2 weeks without anything else to do. Although i think ill give it a try without any hospital beds involved.

Gurren Lagann as others have said.

Cowboy Bebop is beautiful, action-packed, poignant and occasionally quite funny. It also has a very good English dub.

Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex is now on its third series. It's stunning to look at, astoundingly well written and has some great metaphysical high-concept plotlines, but you may have difficulty following the ins and outs of the episodes and overarching plots without a flowchart the size of a tablecloth.

Outlaw Star is kind of fun.

Sergeant Frog, original manga and later anime, are both worth a look for a background into Japanese culture from the perspective of an invading platoon of alien cartoon frogs. It's so mad and funny beyond words. The early mangas almost had me in tears, and made for some funny looks from other passengers on the bus.

Somebody further up said 'anything by Studio Ghibli'. They're right. Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Laputa: Castle in the Sky are my particular favourites. Proper family entertainment, with all the gun-play, evil spirits, giant robots, shape-shifters and armies of steampunk nazis that should entail. Actually, I think that just covers Laputa.

Oh Rumbling Hearts in a good anime. *warning* very disappointing ending VERY!
I'm with you, that ending made me sad -_-

I've enjoyed quite a few, namely:

Samurai Champloo
Trigun
Scrapped Princess
Full Metal Alchemist
She, The Ultimate Weapon

There are a shitload more, but I won't list them...too many. And I don't read Manga, the only one I have read, is Devil May Cry because my partner got that with the dvd last month.

I've found a few good ones recently.

Veritas - kind of a martial arts, super powerish manga.
Magic Ban removal: Closer and Hyde - Magicians!
Ultra Black - Not entirely sure what its about since theres only like 1 issue out right now that i can find. Looks good to start with though.

I'd say Berserk. The anime and manga are awesome. The managa is better though.
I've seen like the first 7 eps if berserk, but I swear, it got too unbearable somehow, I might have to go back to it. By the way, the dreamcast game was actually quite awesome lol.
