No one mentioned One Peace? Sure it may drag on at times but what anime doesn't? Personally I think One Piece is one of the best anime's I've ever seen! It's unrealistic, funny, crazy, and in short fun. Best part is they have a whole website with ALL episodes subbed in English for you non-Japanese speakers, and even all the anime. IMO Bleach and Naruto don't even come close to One Piece.

My bad, didn't see the one guy who reads the manga.

For Manga, I swear by:

Great Teacher Onizuka
Berserk
Rurouni Kenshin

For anime, Princess Mononoke(Best movie ever) and many of the Studio Ghibli movies. There are some great series' out there, but it depends what you are looking for.

Death Note
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (it's in my avatar. Be warned, it starts out pretty boring)
Gurren Lagann (Awesome in a can..er, show)
Fullmetal Alchemist, old series or the new one if you don't mind subs. (Pretty much the best long-running shonen series out there)
Anything by Hayao Miyazaki (Do I need to explain?)
Cowboy Bebop
Akira
Haruhi
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Maybe. It's understandable if you don't like it, the cast does have issues.)
MAYBE Lucky Star. DO NOT judge it by the first 4 episodes. Also has very limited appeal.
Code Geass (All Hail Brittania!)

Well, I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, and I've never read it, but I highly recommend the anime version of Kuroshitsuji. It's amazing.

Black Cat, Manga only, as well. However, the beginning's very different from what comes later, and depending on which you like more, it either starts off really weird or becomes really weird. It's not a quick transition, though, so it's difficult to tell. Don't watch it, though. They really messed up the character designs.

Fullmetal Alchemist, both. This is amazing. No questions, no anything. Quite near the best anything.

While I haven't seen the anime, Pet Shop of Horrors is an absolutely amazing manga. The sequel doesn't disappoint, either.

If you can find it, read Bizenghast. Although it's not officially manga, it is licensed by Tokyopop and is creepy and wonderful.

While I can't say I recommend watching Claymore, I can highly recommend reading it.

Finally, there is Negima! There are two anime versions, neither of which is very good from what I can gather, but the manga is incredibly entertaining and well-drawn. Besides, it's by Ken Akamatsu, who also did Love Hina. However, if you're going to read this one, don't read it online unless you can find a very large and thorough scan. There's a lot of small print that can be really hilarious, and that is really worth reading. It's licensed by Del Rey, and they do a pretty good job of translating.

Also, if you like Bleach, I really recommend an earlier work of his, Zombiepowder. It's only four books long, but really good.

Anime : Naruto (I enjoy it), Bleach (I enjoyed it; SKIP THE BOUNT ARC!), Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagaan, Samurai Champloo, Lupin III, Case Closed (or Detective Conan, for the subbed, but the dub is actually pretty good), Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic (Mechs + Japanese schoolgirls = CLASSIC!), Robotech (FUCK YEA!), and YuYu Hakusho. If you watched it while you were young, the Dragonball serieses are still fun to watch.

Manga: Deathnote, Love Hina (WARNING: May cause EXTREME depression. How does that loser have 7+ girls wanting to ride his purple python? Sure, a couple of them are like EIGHT, but that's beside the point. I'm gonna go cry myself to sleep now.), Naruto again (I prefer seeing actiony-type stuff in motion, but the manga's story is so far ahead that I don't care.). Yeah, I'm pretty mainstream =P.

EDIT: Forgot Hellsing in Anime. Seras Vittoria FTW! Oh, and I also enjoy Lucky Star, and I'm proud of it!
EDIT AGAIN: Akira was a great movie, as was Spirited Away. Also, a little-known (to my knowledge) series called Betterman. Pretty entertaining. Think Horror+Mechs. It actually works out pretty well, save for the finale, which makes NO SENSE.

Black Lagoon for the action lover, plus you get to see my avatar in it.
Code Gayass or Geass or Geias something like that i've wathced through both seasons online, don't watch the adult swim version, the story is incredible especially if you like guessing what startegy he is going to use next and it is less predictable than other animes.
The only thing is both end in a way that makes you want more, Black should have another season coming out eventually i think and code... I want another series that will likely be contradictory to the ending and completely suck compared to previous episodes but i still want it.

I'd say Berserk. The anime and manga are awesome. The managa is better though.
I've seen like the first 7 eps if berserk, but I swear, it got too unbearable somehow, I might have to go back to it. By the way, the dreamcast game was actually quite awesome lol.
Hmm. Well you should then try the manga it has expanded back stories, more violence, more interesting characters, and it just better than the stripped down anime version. I got the PS2 game imported and its sweet even though I don't know what the hell they're saying.

Well, for manga I can definitely recommend Air Gear, though there is some 18+ stuff in their. In terms of anime... Elfen Lied is good, if you don't mind alot of violence and tits. Kannagi is good too.

Also, in manga terms, .hack//legend of the twilight is good. Definitely one of my favorites.

I'm not really into anime, but there've been a few worthwhile entries worth checking out:
Anything by Miyazaki, especially Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind & Howl's Moving Castle.
Steamboy
Cowboy Bebop
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (mostly because it's a MASSIVE celebration of rock music)

What the Hell, no one reccomends Soul Eater?
thats the best series ive seen. EVER.

regardless here are some of the series i liked
Samurai Champloo
Afro Samurai
Black Cat
Cowboy Bebop
Azumanga Daioh (kind of slow paced)
Macademi Wasshoi (Warning- 12 episodes of basically nothing but otaku fan service but if that sounds good to you then you just might enjoy it. And for the love of god if anyone does watch it be careful of episode 5. it may just well scar you for life)

I'll be honest, I don't know what you've seen already.

If your interested in blood and body parts watch...Elfen Lied...(though the Manga explains more). If your interested in explosions, action, and gunslinging...check out Black Lagoon, Full Metal Panic 1 and 2 (not FUMOFFU), Noir, or Kiddy Grade. Potty humor for laughs?? Try Chobits or Inukami. Excellent Sci-Fi/Religious story with a gut-wrenching final episode, go for Chrno Crusade. Into swords and duels? There is always Seirei no Moribito or Samurai Champloo.

My personal favorite is Last Exile.
I enjoyed Gunslinger Girl as well, (though the manga was MUCH better).

Threads like this make me want to do my Manga Mashup idea a lot sooner... Some people see a silly or bad manga and associate all mangas to it, which causes issues.

Honestly? I like Big O. Giant Robots + Steampunk + Noir = Awesome.

I used to be into both many many moons ago. Not so much anymore. In fact, until a few weeks ago, it'd probably been a good two years since I watched or read anything.

But I found Me and The Devil Blues. It's cool. About Bluesman Robert Johnson in the south in the 30s, and how he sold his soul to the devil. It's a good read, and it strays far enough from regular manga to be fresh, but still has the same feel.

I'm biased though, 'cause RJ might be my favourite musician ever.

For non-anime/manga fans, I mostly recommend the following action titles: Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, and Ghost in the Shell (first movie and the TV show if you don't mind lots of talking). A popular non-action title would be the movie Spirited Away.

Usually if someone doesn't like those, I experiment with Shoujo manga like Fruits Basket. Finally, if that doesn't work, I throw them obscure titles like Emma and Parasyte. And if even THOSE fail, then I surrender.
