For non-anime/manga fans, I mostly recommend the following action titles: Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, and Ghost in the Shell (first movie and the TV show if you don't mind lots of talking). A popular non-action title would be the movie Spirited Away.

Usually if someone doesn't like those, I experiment with Shoujo manga like Fruits Basket. Finally, if that doesn't work, I throw them obscure titles like Emma and Parasyte. And if even THOSE fail, then I surrender.
Props for reading Parasyte. That manga rocks my socks. You have good other choices as well.

Uhhh... Some other stuff to throw into the ring: Beck, D.Gray Man, MxO, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Heroic Age. But none of these compare to my favorite so far, AKUMETSU.

That's it. I'm doing my first Manga/Anime Mashup right after I do my Braid review. It SREAMS at me to write it already... and I feel like someone being nagged to death during a hangover.

Azumanga Daioh!

I watched this after viewing both Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Mary Sue Haruhi Suzumiya, and I have to say it pwns them both by a mile.

My other recommendations are:

Ouran High School Host Club
+Anima (Manga)
Lupin the Third (if you can find it)

I tend to stay far away from Shounen (translates into "kid" in english, right?) Anime when I go look for something to watch. I find that the less shounen it is, the more emotionally touching it is.

I usually look for anime that is very emotionally heavy.
A list of what I've watched and enjoyed:

Serial Experiment Lain (this one's a braintwister!)
**Haibane Renmei
Dennou Coil
Noein, To your ohter self
Kamichu!
Air (both the series and movie)
*sola
Kanon 2006

Haibane Renmei is clearly my favorite, sola comming right after. Those are the ones I've enjoyed the most. I'm not so much into fighting and violence and stuff like that.

I can only tolerate only a few so try 'em out. Most anime is childish or retarded and filled with flash backs or they are filler episodes that serve no purpose!

Full Metal Alchemist (great)
Hunter X Hunter (abit childish but great)
Berzerker (old but great)
Neon Genesis (some issues but still great)

Anime/Manga to try:

Hellsing from me. Alucard is freaking awesome, and I don't care who knows it. Also, it has Nazi Vampires.
Yu-Gi-Oh (well, the first two seasons) are a guilty pleasure of mine.
So is Pokemon, but only until Togepi.
Avatar: The Last Airbender doesn't count, but it is one of the most awesome shows I've ever watched. So... yeah.

Anime/Manga to Avoid:

Bleach - It gets repetitive, hard to like the characters.
Naruto - Way too long, not much behind it.
Fruits Basket - No actual plot.

And that's all I can think of at the moment. I'm not a big anime/manga guy though, so maybe the bigger fans can direct you.

You pretty much solidified my feeling for Bleach, Naruto and Fruits Basket. I've obviously seen Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, avatar doesn't appeal to me as it is a western created manga/anime (tell me if I"m wrong) I'll definitely give Hellsing a go though, that sounds pretty awesome.

Don't conflate the Fruits basket anime with the manga. The anime is like an extremely brief snapshot of the manga taken by a person with 20/500 vision using a Daguerreotype camera.

So, Macross, then.

No, wait, you don't get to have Macross, because Harmony Gold are dicks.

Carry on.

I just finished the entire Code Geass series. Truly an amazing piece of work. It's a mecha style anime that is pretty heavy on the tragedy. If you're a sensitive person I would suggest keeping a box of tissues with you when you watch. The tragedy isn't frequent but each tearjerking event that occured usually drove the storyline in huge directions. The ending had me bawling like a baby and I'm generally an emotionally dead person.

Yeah, that's messed up. :(

Well, you should really try Soul Eater (it's over actually, 50-51 episodes - Extremely well-done animation, stylish combat, and decent plot)
