Nope. Blondes need not apply here.
You know, she was originally a brunette but when looking for modeling work she was told that blondes would get more work (and apparently, fun) so she bleached her hair to her famous golden blonde

Marilyn Monroe was a woman of many talents, and many achievements. She was a successful actress, she graced the very first cover of Playboy Magazine and she sang to President Kennedy on his birthday. And of course, she was seen as an amazingly beautiful woman. I wonder how people would look at her if she lived today. Would she still be considered the epitome of beauty? So I ask you, fellow male and female Escapists:

Do you consider Marilyn Monroe a beautiful woman?

[HEADING=2]Happy Birthday, Mr. President[/HEADING]

NO

why???

Plastic surgery

she doesnt really look like that, she has been surgically enhanced

there is nothing REAL about her, nothing classic about, her looks are fraud.

Yes.

But most of the actresses from back then were actually beautiful, not just tarted up with a fuckton of makeup like a lot of the ones we have today.
Word!

Yes, I do find her attractive. She's gorgeous.

Yeah, I can imagine her showing up at a Hollywood agent, and getting told 'Ha, lose 50 pounds fatty, and maybe we can talk, I can't even see your ribs'.

So sad the way society has gone.

I've never understood it either, you ask most men what they want, honestly, in a woman, and it's two things, T and A, you don't get that on a boyish slender figure without surgery.

I recently read that Size zero wasn't enough and they've introduced a size minus to cater for women who find the bones jutting thru their skin look too fat.

Marilyn was a fine looking woman, as were Hepburn, and most others mentioned here.

I'm pretty good. Yourself?

Shit yeah. The epitome of beauty today? Maybe not, but there are billions more women on the earth and billions more opinions on what is beautiful. That doesn't change the fact that she was hot than and would be hot now (if she wasn't a corpse).

At the risk of sounding bad: I'd hit that hard.

I'd say she is beautiful. Not exactly my type, but much more pleasant to look at than the skeleton-thin freaks that pass for beauties in most of the media these days...

Makes you wonder how the thin idea stays around when it seems most men prefer some curves to a woman, after all, girls, stop reading magazines that promise to 'tell you what men really want' and try asking men.

At risk of sounding like a big nancy, mostly what men want is a woman that wants to be with them and cares, everything else that ticks a box on their list is a bonus.

I'd date Kate Moss if it turned out she was really nice, and into video games and horror movies and stand up comedy, and not so into cocaine. As it is, if I had to pick a 'celeb' type, I'd go for Katy Brand, as she comes across as genuinely nice and upbeat, as well as having the look I'd go for, who's considered 'fat' by todays standards, but is realistically probably one size or so above Marilyn.

Aethetics are individual. 'Modern' beauty isnt everyones ideal. I would actually hazard that its not even a majorities ideal of beauty.

The thing to factor in is womens own ideals influencing males in a reinforcement role. For some reason women who have a proper layer of fat (good for holding on to & cuddling up to) and dark hair (Amongst other things besides being striking provide a distinct contrast to the genital areas) compare themselves to anorexic ugly hatchet faced dyed blonde girls.

Dont even get me started on breast fetishism because Mummy fed the kid for too long from the breast (or not enough).
Wow there is a lot more in your post than I can grasp, especially the dark hair and breast comments. Feel free to elaborate, you've got my attention.

Meh. America's Most Historically Iconic Slut never really appealed to me. Audrey Hepburn though...*sigh*

I have a poster of this shot, looking at it for more than ten seconds just makes your heart melt and your troubles feel far away.

I think you're right about it not being the opinion of the majority, but rather an opinion that's been constantly reinforced and pushed onto us until we consciously accept it as society's ideal.

I actually have a (boring as batshit) theory that the perception of stick-thin female beauty in the fashion industry is a direct result of the fact that there is a high proportion of gay men in the industry, and very thin women don't produce as much oestrogen once they get below a particular weight level and instead produce androgen which effectively mimics testosterone, making them more sexually appealing to those male-attracted individuals in the fashion industry.

I think you might be on to something with that theory. Seriously.
