Hmm, I usually just buy the one dollar '1st Issue Classics' that most comic book stores have. Most publishers do these now to get people into them, and there are some pretty good ones- Cable and Deadpool, Sin City, House of M, Serenity. These are usually worth getting just to see what everyone is talking about.

I'm just going to reiterate what a lot of people have said and recommend the Dark Reign label of Marvel comics. It takes a darker tone which I found to be a bit enjoyable. This is a bit dated but the Ultimates and Ultimate Spiderman are some of my favorites in the marvel universe. Also easy to track down in graphic novel form, you won't be too confused with continuity. Now this isn't Marvel but I found "All Star Batman and Robin" to be quite good. It's outside of DC continuity and it's a semi alternate take on the meeting of Batman and Robin and the superheroes during that time. That's a little bit I could think of off the top of my head. Happy Hunting!

If you liked the Thor Omnibus then I'd suggest reading Thor the series. If you don't have the Time to read 600+ chapters then do this: Read the J. Michael Straczynski run of Thor and accept that before this arc, Thor died. (He did, you can go back and read it, but this arc is about him coming back to life and bringing Asgard with him. Good stuff)

Personally I like most of X-Men and it's spin-offs like X-Man, X-Force, and Generation X, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like them.
