Mass Effect 2. Game of the Year. I'm calling it. [Spoilers will probably abound]

No matter how good it is, by the end of the year, no one will be talking about it. It won;t be shiny & new enough for their attention spans.

-Can't lie, this is premium logic. Sure, "Mass Effect 2" is pure sex NOW, but look at MGS4. By the end of the year all people talked about in regards to that game was how long the cut-scenes were. And what about "Batman: Arkham Asylum"? Newness is a large factor when it comes to these "GAME OF THE YEAR" titles.

--Oh, and I love all three games I previously mentioned. I can't stop playing ME2 and MGS4.

Wait 11 more months and for the new game craze to die down before saying something like that. I dont doubt that ME2 will be GOTY nominee or anything, it's a good game and all, but there are still plenty of other titles to come. Even then, what does it matter? Game of the Year is a rather hollow title these days I find. I have no doubt in my mind that it will be nominated for best RPG, but we got a whole year and dozens of games to come.

GTA IV was still considered game of the year by many, though it was released pretty early in 2008.
And you're being a little revisionist about MGS4. It received tons of praise at the end of the year. (An aside: The cutscenes were extremely long, you can't expect that to not be hated by many. I know it caught me off guard when I started playing my friends copy one morning and by the time the gameplay started, I had to go to work. Nevertheless, it was still overwhelmingly loved by the end of the year).
BioShock was released in the middle of 2007, we all know how loved it was and still is.

-I wasn't complaining about how people were talking about how long MGS4 cut-scenes were. They had/have every right to, because they're damn looong.

---Anyway, what you're saying is true to an extent. I suppose it depends on who gives the award. With so many sites and mags out there now on video gaming, it IS short sighted not to expect ONE of them giving ME2 the award (if not most depending on how the wind blows). I'm just saying not to expect a grand super-daddy award from all of them.

Why do people think games need to be original all the time? Everything is a derivative of something else and Mass Effect stands above the rest with fantastic art direction, a cohesive universe, and the most advanced character-character conversation system to date.

I presume then that Mass Effect 2 must introduce a whole lot more depth because my opinion of Mass Effect 1 was that its universe was highly generic and very derivative of Star Wars.

I never felt a Star Wars vibe while playing Mass Effect. I can't think of ANYTHING in either of the two games that was noticeably from Star Wars.

Fair enough. I found the universe to be one of the most memorable I've experienced but that just comes from subjectivity anyway. As for the socio-political structure...I can KIND of see it but I don't think it was developed enough in Star Wars to make that conclusion.

I don't like the idea of dismissing the entire years games before they release as "not as good as". I like to hope that no matter how good something is, there is always a chance for something better. His Op stated otherwise.
I also fear any and all possible chances of flaming from disgruntled users who had a disliking of ME2, what with all the probatuons, suspensions, and even a ban or two going on lately.

If you turn out to be wrong, you look like a fool.
If you turn out to be right, people will focus on the fact that you didn't even wait for some of the other games come out.

I see very little good that can come from giving such a title this early.
"So far" might be acceptable, but "Of the Year" Is a bit early.

hardly fair to say so far when the only titles out so far otherwise are bayonetta and darksiders.

I'm not saying that it is the best so far, I was merely telling The OP that, in my opinion, it (So Far) would be a more acceptable for him/her/im/er to say for his/her/is/er opinion, rather than directly go to game of the year, .

Of course. That's one of 2 reasons everyone's so eager to get their games on sale by Christmas.

Okay, so what I've gathered here is if I want to play a FANTASTIC conversation simulator with watered down Shooter and RPG elements, a story that is not very original but set in space, then this is the game to get. Nah, I'll take a pass.

Really? Several people have said its the best game ever, and that is what you gleam? Your missing out.

I don't think it will win GOTY. it was the only game I've personally really been looking forward to this year, but GOW 3 and some other titles I can't think of off the top of my head will probably snag it anyway. KOTOR was the exception, RPG's get screwed over because there is a certain amount of frat boy schmoozing that magazines recognize. Everyone wants to hear their game won, and there seems to be a lot of them.

I would like to agree with you but I dont think that GOTY has ever been given to anything that came out this early, honestly I think most reviewers give GOTY to games they just finished playing
