Loyal Tali/Legion send into vent
Loyal Garrus, Jacob, or Miranda to lead the two alt teams
Loyal Jack/Samara/Morinth for biotic bubble duty
Leave Grunt, Garrus, and Zaeed behind for final fight, take Mordin and another squishy

I'm sorry, but you really have to be pretty new to RPGs if you don't realize the importance of being the most important thing to your companions next to breathing.

The reason that you lost Jack, Thane, and Tali was because you didn't upgrade the armor plating (get the option to do so from talking to Jacob), the shields (talk to Tali), and the forward gun (talk to Garrus). Unless you have a save from before going through the Relay, you're just going to have to deal with their losses.

As to Fr]anc[is' advice, he's mostly on the money. Who you leave behind to cover the back entrance really doesn't matter, take whomever you like. Allies that can damage barriers and armor are a boon, though. I usually send Mordin back with the saved Normandy crew and take Grunt and Thane in to fight the final boss.

Sometimes it seems party members wouldn't know how to feed themselves without my help. <_<

I find that the Mass Effect wiki is a great font of information about how to go through both Mass Effect 1 and 2. If you have any questions, go check out http://masseffect.wikia.com

Loyalty and upgrades. Make all the characters loyal and get all the ship upgrades and you won't loose anyone just for the hell of it. In addendum to Fr]anc]is's instructions, use Mordin as your escort for the crew back to the Normandy, I have yet to lose him on that duty. As for losing people when you have them 'hold the line' while you fight the Reaper, that one is mainly based on time I believe. But if they're all Loyal, you usually don't have to worry about losing anyone.

I take Tali and Garrus in the final fight and I've only lost Mordin, but that was my first playthrough. I made the mistake of using Thane for the bubble and lost Grunt, and I used Jacob to escort the Crew to the Normandy so squishy Mordin bought it.

Out of unadulterated curiousity, why do you take Tali and Garrus in there? Nothing in there has shields, nor are there synthetics, so Overload, AI Hacking, and Energy Drain don't do you much. Sure, Tali has drones, but that's about it. Garrus can put sniper rounds into things, especially with Armor Piercing ammo up, but Thane is just as good of a sniper and has Warp to rip off Barriers.

Edit: Spelling.

OGs for the win ;p I did the exact same thing

Also who you leave behind does matter, each guy has a toughness rating, and if the average is low, people start dying. Being loyal boosts toughness, and G/G/Z have the highest. There is an order people die in in that section, and poor Mordin is first on the list

All of my people lived, it was awesome cant wait for Mass Effect 3...

But for me.. *SPOILER*************************************************This is a warning >_<
Get ALL loyal compainions (its worth it trust me)
get all ship upgrades... (med bay dont count)
Sent Legion for teh Security vents
Mordin for to guide back to the normandy
Jack or uuuuh the other good whatever to sheild you from those bugs
Garrus for second team leader
Take Garrus and Grunt for the final battle

*End of spoiler************************************************************

In the end it is a great game, just needs better DLC...

Hope that helps ya and tell me if I missed anything XD

Maybe it has something to do with the class you all are playing; as an Engineer, all I can do against the barriers of the Collectors (especially Harbinger) are sic my drone on them and then shoot spitballs at 'em. Is this thread full of Sentinels and no one opted to inform me?

Ah, I never had that problem; Like I said, I sent poor Mordin back so that he didn't get caught in the crossfire, and everyone and their brother on the team was loyal, so that issue never came up. This thread caught my attention because I had just beaten the game an hour ago (at the time of posting) and I got out with no casualties.

As was stated earlier, there's multiple choices for who to send into the vents, who to lead fire teams, and who to put up the barrier. And why in blazes does everyone take Garrus into the final battle, he's not that impressive against Collectors and the final boss!

All of this. However, I found it very difficult to regain Jack's trust...I basically did everything in my power to do so and I still didn't have it. I'm not entirely sure, but I think you might be screwed as far as getting everyone out alive goes. Which only gives you one option: go through it again...personally, I don't think that's such a bad thing...damn good game.
