Sad face. I mean not that I don't want Mass Effect 3, I want it so much I'd sacrifice a leg for it, but all this excitement should be reserved for a new IP.

But I haven't thought of that possibility, Earth getting attacked and banged up. Would explain both the ME-like model and the destroyed imagery of London.

Still, FUCK YEAH MASS EFFECT 3 WOOHOO!!!!

Honestly, as much as I love the Mass Effect series, I hope this isn't it. I want something NEW to come out of Bioware. They have so much potential, and they do such fantastic games, but they waste all their talent on 1 or 2 series at a time.
because if anything works well it's making 10 half-assed games at once rather than doing everything in your power to make 2/3 products with the fullest attention you can give them. They're also making the most ambitious projects in the gaming industry, they're not just making Halo's here.

MORE OT: I'm not convinced it's the reapers rather than A Reaper. I'm thinking that it was the Batarian terrorist groups from the traverse attacked earth. In "Bringing Down the Sky" the leader of the batarians seemed like he was indoctrinated rather than just genocidal. Sovereign/Nazara was around for a long time and we already know it turned the Rachni queens into savages hell bent on killing.

EDIT: ME3 could be the red herring. It was at least a 12-18 months between MEs original release and any news about ME2 while BioWare have two high profile products namely DA2 (coming out March/April-ish) and TOR (which has no solid date but probably September/October) which ME3 would draw attention away from. All of this could just be one giant hoax and the VGA reveal is something completely different.

On one hand, this could be very clever marketing to generate hype for a future project, whilst keeping the present development plan a secret. On the other hand, if it isn't ME3, there are gonna be a ton of pissed off fans.
Yeah. Though they may end up releasing MEO 'Mass Effect Online' or something which I guess would be a suprise and still keep the fans happy. Or they could be making the 'mistakes' intentionally in order to make people think it's not ME3 then announce ME3.. Or something xD I think an online Mass Effect is likely. We'll find out soon :p

They already announced Mass Effect would be a trilogy, since the first game was released.

I'm really hoping ME3 is not the announcement.

I should say the surprise isn't the game, but its dull plot. Earth? Of all the fun places they could have conjured in their universe. I hope this is all some massive mistake.

I'm a little confused...how is that a waste?

They're working on Mass Effect 2 DLC, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic; isn't that enough? don't forget the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2, which is essentially the GOTY edition

OT: I really, really hope this proves to be true and Bioware finally gives us some info about ME3.

Well the big surprise could be something they're building into ME3 as well. No one said it was a game we didn't know about, but that it was "their next big game." It could be a part of a game. We know very little about ME3 that we're left to assume it will be like the past ME games.

Why wouldn't the Reapers just destroy Earth?
You, uh, did play ME2 right? If so, the entire last mission (plus the hit-and-run mission on the disabled Collector cruiser mid-game) should suggest one option fairly clearly:

We're their preferred raw material for creating the next generation of Reapers. Destroying Earth would be a collossal waste of food. (Cthulhu saves: he might get hungry later.)

As for the leak/hint/clue/whatever, *squeee!*

So... they're going to use humans as food when there's a whole galaxy full of other food thats just as good? Or are they going to build another human reaper? And even then, whats it going to do? Walk around in space and punch ships? Thats just silly.

Dude, how can ME3 be a surprise? They've been talking about ME as a trilogy since like, the first game!

Interesting. On one hand, I was looking forward to a new IP by Bioware.

On the other hand, any information regarding ME3 physically arouses me.

Oh screw you, Bioware. This is just horrible. Don't get people excited by hinting to something new and refreshing(as refreshing as Bioware standards go, anyway) and then go "Oh yeah we're doing that thing you've known for three years we were doing. SURPRISE!".

It's getting really hard to like you these days Bioware. Guess I'll still buy your games though, as few enough games stimulate me these days as it is.

Someone who shares my sentiments.

Unless, the battle for Earth is so hopeless it's over before the end of the opening chapter...then we're talking about a damn interesting game, in my opinion.

Makes sense that it'd be Mass Effect. It's made bank for Bioware. Of course they'd want to focus on sending it off with a bang before starting a new project. I'm okay with that. I'd like to see the promised "decisions mattering" actually being true, because if it's just gonna be more of Mass Effect 2's idea of "Consequence" I'll certainly be disappointed.

"Ambitious"? Mass Effect? I like the games too, but the Mass Effect series is Bioware playing it safe dude. They go with the third person shooter stuff to appeal to everyone else while having dialogue options and skills (Which were made pretty shallow in ME2) so they can draw in their old fans (Which hasn't worked as well as they'd hoped). They're good games, but ambitious they're not.
Games that focus on story over... well everything are unambitious? A series that isn't just paying lip service to every last choice you made in a second game but also taking through to a third game is unambitious? In a world where innovation is giving Marcus Fenix a new hat you're going to tell me that BioWare are unambitious?
